Title: One of my geocaches got blown up by the bomb squad.
Post by: jeffy on January 29, 2009, 05:18:43 PM
It was at the Solomon rest area.  If you don't know what geocaching is, hit the back button on your browser.

The note from the mod said....

The cache died today, the KHP Special Response Team blew it up. It was apparently found by a non-geocacher and reported to the Highway Patrol. They X-rayed the container and did not see anything hazardous inside, they blew it up anyway.... If you decide to submit another here, be sure to clearly mark the container and maybe we should use something clear for this one.

Now THAT would be an original idea!  There are 750000 active caches in the world and likely that many have been archived.  I'm sure you would be the first person to think of such an idea!  Go for it!

Garmin 60csx's run about $400, but you can get one that costs half that or less and do just fine.  I used one of those little blue Legends until about a month ago and I found a ton just fine.  You could probably do it with a Nuvi, too, but they would certainly have their limitations.

The sport/hobby/game is a lot of fun and can be very addicting.  And there's enough in the area to keep you busy for awhile. There's over 100 in or within ~15 miles of Topeka.  Seen a lot of neat places and out of the way areas that usually only locals are privy to because of it.

A few of us found one on top of Mt. Evans this last summer.  We didn't really understand it, but taking a crap in it was an idea (which we didn't do).

Instead we kinda sorta started our own geocache and didn't list it...aka, we left something near the mountain that someone will find some day and scratch their head.

The same one that jeffy had blown up got dumped in sometime in December.  They also managed to write "poop" on all the pages in the "log" book.  Coincidentally, that cache is at a rest area.

I found one in a rural area in JoCo awhile back that the previous finder had found a brownie in.  I was the one who was finally brave enough a year later to go find it again, still with the roll of TP that the guy who found the brownie had left in it in case the brown bandit came back.

hey, do you realize how difficult it is to just breathe at 14k feet?  I wasn't about to bend over at the waist.. I may not of been able to get back up without rolling down the side of the mountain.

Got an email today through the geocaching website.  It seems one of the troopers involved signed up for an account and emailed me about the cache:

I would like to contact you about a hide you had placed at the Solomon rest area. I work for the Kansas Highway Patrol bomb squad. I have your find, and would like to ask you a few questions about it. Pleas contact me as soon as you can.

If you want to get in cheap, contact a Garmin distributor and tell them you want a GPS V refurb, they're selling for around $170 w/ the mapsource PC software ($100 addition to cost w/ most new units), 12v adapter, PC cable, and car dash mount, plus a certificate for one free upgrade on the S/W.   If you wait to register the unit until you are ready for the S/W update you can upgrade to the latest version out.   If you have a laptop you can interface with it while driving for location, the on-unit screen is B/W and not very big, but useable.  hth

I wouldn't contact the cop, he sounds like a gay geocache stalker.

Sounds like it was found by KDOT, ironically some of the same people I used to work with.

The trooper was an ass.

I may get billed for the bomb squad.

I'm thinking of calling the newspaper so at least I can get my 5 minutes of American Idol fame out of this.

I'm not really surprised by it, especially since it was a bomb squad guy.  I mean, this is a guy that goes around thinking anything sitting out in public could kill him, from mattresses laying in the median that blew off of someones van to a napkin blowing in the wind.  I'd hate to have a job that left me that high-strung.

They X-rayed the container and did not see anything hazardous inside, they blew it up anyway....

These are the kids that went nuts on 4th of July, then found a job that actually paid them to keep blowing things up.  I can see the conversation now.  "X-Ray is clear.  Dang...  We did drive all the way out here.  Maybe just to be sure..."

I use a garmin 60csx.

Nice.  I think the 60csx is actually better than the new Colorado and Oregon models.  Better battery life, precission and reliability.  You can get a new one for under $200 online.

Good luck with the cop.  What a prick.

The under $200 are probably either refurbs, which I don't trust, or stolen and resold.

There are stories like that all the time.  Technically, it's against gc.com policy to place a cache anywhere near what could be construed as a terrorist target (rest areas don't count).  Schools and bridges are included in that list, but I've found quite a few near bridges - not so many near schools.

Rest areas are nice locations for caches.  As a traveler, it's good to have a quick stop to pee and cache, hopefully not in the same place.  There are quite a few creative caches placed in rest areas, most of them quite a ways from the pee shack.  The one I had blown up was clear at the back of the rest area, probably 100 yards from an well traveled area.

While rest area caches aren't must-see caches, they are solid, well placed caches for the most part.

As long as it's not a tank that's on patrol in Baghdad, it's ok.  Military equipment on display in parks are very popular places to hide caches.  Sometimes they can be quite tricky to find.

Try train cars on display.  Can be 2 or 3 times as big with far more places to hide.
