So I got an external hard drive that I want to use to put all of my DVD's on.  I've heard that if you convert to mp4 it compresses the file a lot but you lose quality.  Any suggestions for format, program etc?

Divx/Xvid are what most people convert movies to.  But, if you have an portable media player some won't play Divx formatted videos (I'm looking at you ipod).

Just do divx AVI files.

Or use mp5's.
