I hated Firecracker, fyi.
Really hated it.

Funny story from undergrad.....Steve Balderson offered a prominent role in his first movie to a buddy of mine, but then rescinded it.....I ALMOST was friends with a &@#%ing movie star.

For some reason, Camel gave the cast tons of cartons of Camel Reds. I took up smoking because, why not? They are free! Then I got hooked. Now, I have a goddam Camel pool table from all my Camel miles.

Firecracker is his best film, easily. It's an acquired taste. When I was a GTA at K-State, Steve was a student of mine. Nice guy, but his artistic vision takes awhile to get used to.
Pep Squad is interesting, but only if you have watched kabuki and understand it. I told Steve that was how I was able to watch the film, and he said I was pretty much dead on, at least in theory, although the kabuki angle had not crossed his mind.
A few months ago, I drove to Lawrence to see a screening of Watch Out. Probably the most indigestible of his films. I was a bit annoyed by this one, but the rest of the audience seemed to love it, laughing at scenes that made me cringe (in the opening scene, an abusive father beats his daughter with a club on his front porch, all for laughs; later, the hero has anal sex with an inflatible male doll with his own picture taped to the face).
I like Steve a lot, and he's a talented guy. But I will be the first to admit that I don't quite "get" his vision.

Sounds like a biopic of BMWjayhawk

Bingo.
My guess....Stevo cooled on the idea when it became clear that he wasn't going warm up the casting couch.

Meaning, you have to have terrible taste. It's garbage, start to finish.
The guy isn't an artist, he's a pretentious hack. Amateur hour.

Actually, PW, I don't disagree. I think Steve's best skills have to do with frame composition and cinematography. He needs a good writer to polish his dialogue, and he needs a legitimate assistant director to work with his actors so they come off more naturally. He also needs a good editor because his movies could stand some judicious slicing and dicing. But ... it is his vision, and there are enough people in the world responding positively to it that he is able to continue. I can't say that myself.
