Also, did you know about the Michigan left before you encountered one?

You just can't turn left onto or off of a divided highway.  To "turn left" onto one, you turn right and go to the u-turn lane, and make a u-turn.  To "turn left" off of one, you go past the intersection, make a u-turn, and turn right.  I had heard of them briefly.

how are the college sports fans.
i bet it's like Michigan = ku, Michigan State = K-State but 100x better?  pretty even split?

Kind of meh on college sports where I am.  One guy in the office has michigan season tix, but he's like "we're really spoiled" and stuff.  I also need to weasel my way into one of his tix next season.  Overall, there isn't much "buzz" around the "office".  I did see an Okie State sticker on a van and got mildly excited.

Saw lots of michigan state gear at IKEA while MSU was destroying ku.

Also, the accents here are very, very, strong.  It's hilarious being the only normal talking person in the state.

Pretty accurate.  I lived in Zeeland for about a year.  It's near Holland.  I've never seen people so pissed when there isn't snow.  Also the first time I saw the city have to haul off snow from the sides of the road because there's too much.  It literally snowed everyday for 45 days once.  The wind chill got to -40 a couple times too.  You'll love the summer though.

The Michigan lefts were the most annoying things in the world.

It snows constantly in Colorado, except here the people b*tch and moan about the weather instead of appreciating how awesome it is.  Difference is that it melts here--not so much up there.  Ahh lake effect.

Michigan has baffling tort law too.  Like, you t-bone someone in an intersection, total their car and give them whiplash and you don't have to pay them a dime.  Rusty, you should have waited to have your accident.

You know, I mentioned doing it, out loud.  Had a ton of bottles for recycling, and was all like, "ya know, these wouldn't take up much room on a moving truck".  And then I would mention the seinfeld episode to make it seem like a joke.

My parents rented a trailer just to haul a bunch of "decorative" limestone when they moved from Topeka to Tulsa.  The trailer made it almost all the way, but was abandoned after two tires blew and the axle was bent just a few miles from their new home.

The whole "if you can't drive your car to a part of your own state without being forced to drive through another state, then that part of "your" state really shouldn't be "yours" argument seems to resonate with many Badgers.

One thing I've noticed is people are really gung-ho about the cold when they don't have to work out in it all day.

I've worked out in below zero weather all winter and it's entirely a different story.  I'm guessing a lot of those Northern winter warriors would be crying for their mommies if they weren't living most of their waking lives in a heated cubicle.

We used to go skiing in the UP when I lived in Chicago.  Fairly quick trip up there.  The hills are good to learn on, runs last about 30 seconds to a minute - ridiculous when compared to anywhere else.  Fun trips though.

The whole area is like going back into the late 60s through the 70s.  The local radio plays "classic rock" like it's new stuff.  "That was the new Frampton LP.  We'll be back with Thin Lizzy's 'Boys' right after this message from Leinenkugel's."

Wisconsin daydreaming.  Annexation is specifically considered a state-to-state contract, meaning both states and the feds would have to approve it.  Got to think Michigan wouldn't go for it.

Peelee Island?  Worst time evar.  Mosquitoes there are like a cross between Jumanji (size) and the Pig-head-devil-thinger in Lord of the Flies (quantity).  The whole island is for like wine and there is like one restaurant and a beach with more flies (fish, sand, horse, deer) that sucks.

But yeah, you should go just so that you can use it to then later remind her how you took one for the team and that now you should be able to take off work and go to a strip club or a UFB concert or something.

I don't know sh*t about growing apples.  I know a tale about a boatload of blueberries grown in Michigan and some pirates outside of Hong Kong, but I don't know sh*t about growing blueberries either.  I did stop by a place called the Apple Barn in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee en route to the Alum Cave trail head in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park this past weekend.  Overall, I guess what I'm trying to say is that apples are pretty f*cking boring.

I did find it humorous that cyclist is a bicycle elitist, though.

At least the bike didn't have a kick-stand !

Actually the basket did come in handy to carry the camera.  I'm just so used to not having a coaster brake - We were both braking when we really didn't want to brake...

hey, time for an update:

1)  Everyone lives by a lake, but they have to have a cottage they go to on another lake.
2)  Every independent restaurant that serves hamburgers has an olive burger.
3)  People are pretty douchey in west michigan, overall.  If you ain't dutch, you ain't much.  The weird Dutch churches are everywhere.
4)  They have (and enforce) a law that says you can't leave your car while you're fueling.  I tried to go inside the store and buy something while fueling, and the attendant told me to go back to my car, and I was like, "seriously", and he was like, "yeah, it's the law".  I asked about this to a group of native Michiganders and they were all like, "yeah, I'm pretty sure that's enforced everywhere in the world" because they've all never been anywhere but Michigan.

I'll open the thread for questions, and RIP Clams.

People here love to put fake flowers in pots on their front porch.  Like, you go for a walk and they are even obviously fake from the sidewalk.  Hilarious.

another one:  You have to pay to get into a county fair here.  I'm not talking paying for rides - I'm talking about paying to get into the barn and walk through pig sh*t.  They have one fair that's supposed to be a big deal because it's the "largest free fair", but they charge for parking.

Back to recycling. I went to a Michigan game once and was tailgating. I elitely pounded a beer and asked a d00d where the trash can was. He said, just toss it on the ground. I was all, no way d00d I give a hoot and don't pollute. He was all, just do it. So I did and the most amazing thing happened. Out of nowhere, this other d00d swooped in and picked it up. He was like a ballboy at Wimbledon, crazy fast.

Ha, this is true.  Anywhere there is a crowd, there is someone with a trash sack picking up cans.

When you go into the stinky places to get your bottle recycling money, people have multiple barrels of bottles full.  Rusty gets funny looks when I walk in returning my 12 pack of ridiculously elite beer bottles.  It could be my elite, pleasant, Kansan aroma that turns heads, though.

Did you know that they actually charge you for the bottles when you buy the beer?  It's shown on the receipt as a bottle charge seperate from the actual price of beer.

Is it shown on the prices at the store...like, in the cooler is it totalled together or do they just hit you with it at checkout?

hit you at checkout.  NOT included in price at the cooler.  sometimes there's a sign that will say "plus bottle deposit" or something.  but usually they just ring it up at the register.

Got confused about the location of Colchester when you didn't use the appropriate 'ON' postal designation. Let's stick with the program, that's why we have laws.

rusty- I'm wondering if everyone up there is walking around in their fleeces yet, even though it's August and the heat and humidity are likely high. I've noticed that despite some of the best weather in the country, Denverites seem to loathe summer and will walk around in full North Face system of dress during July as if to thumb their nose at young man summer.

Well, I will admit to wearing a fleece occasionally myself in the summer.  Why?  Because it's f*cking 55 degrees out in August, that's why.  I'm not the type of guy that thinks that will be unnecessarily uncomfortable just because the calendar says it should be warmer.

Overall, the summer has been absolutely gorgeous.  It's like that nice week of spring early in May in Kansas, only it lasts for 3 months.  BEAUTIFUL weather up here.

If its clear and yellow, you've got juice there fella!

If its tangy and brown, you're in cider town!

The above has gotten me out of more than a few scrapes in life.

I'm not opposed to temperature-appropriate clothing; if it was 55* I'd be wearing fleece as well. But I'm talking about dudes/chicks wearing that crap when it's 100 out. F that.

Good observ. on Manhattan having like 3.5 weeks of truly nice weather the entire year.

well, it never gets to 100 here.  It got in the 90's for like 3 days this summer, and you thought people would die of heat exhaustion.  Definitely no fleeces, then.

I'm right on Lake Michigan, so it's really really humid.  But it's nice since it's never hot...makes the air feel fresh.

no.  I don't really have any friends here (it's really hard), but mrs. rusty and the offspring make it OK.  It's really kind of fun to be completely detached.

Only problem is the cost/vacation of travel to see family/friends/etc.

LOL

I have totally done this with the museums. Told everybody that streets were closed and nearby metro stops shut down because of security threats and was all "no biggie. happens all the time here in the District."

Now, I always just take them to my favorite restaurants and make up historical facts about it so they think its sufficiently touristy. "This Five Guys was actually built on the same site as one of the cities most notorious brothels" and crap like that.
