MARTIN IS ON a first-name basis with his team, which sparks periodic inquiries about why players are allowed to call him "Frank" instead of "coach Martin."

His answer during Monday's Big 12 coaches teleconference: "I want guys to do what I ask them to do. I don't need people to call me by a certain name to make myself feel empowered. I'm the head basketball coach here, and I make the decisions."

martin was great in the teleconference.  at first bewildered and bemused by the 'tarded questions.  and then rapidly growing angry and belligerent.
