Title: We handled the press.
Post by: I_have_purplewood on November 26, 2008, 09:12:46 AM
It truly made me  :'( (ftp://:'()watching us bring the ball up against their press.  Granted it wasn't much of a press but I haven't seen us be able to do it with so much ease in such a long time.  No dribbling off the foot, not getting in any traps, and not throwing it to the ref.  Nice too have several guards who have the ability to bring the ball down the court. :dancin: (ftp://:dancin:)

I think having Sutton bring the ball up and putting Clemente and/or Pullen past the midline confuses the opposing team.  The are expecting a point guard or off guard to bring it up and so the guy trying to guard Sutton is left grabbing air...

Sutton is an incredible ball handler for his size

The key of breaking a press is getting the ball to the middle. That allows whoever is there (Clemente, Pullen) to have options to his left and right and also attacking the press of the dribble up the middle.

The only thing that was frustrating last night is that we just brought it back out once we got it across midcourt. We should try to get some easy buckets once beating the press, the other team is so spread out its almost like a fast break once the first layer of the press is broken.

Either way it was still an improvement from last year's press breaker.

I played basketball, never played football.
I'd rather post something of substance on the basketball board than talk out my ass on the football board...

There's no f*cking key to breaking the press.  There are lots of ways to do it.

I learned all of my trite, lame sounding bball related expressions from Hubie Brown on TNT.  Back when he had the afro.

Actually there are two keys...

1) dont turn the ball over

2) Get the ball to the middle of the court.

Every press wants you to push the ball down the sideline and throw long passes that get deflected or intercepted. Get the ball to the middle, like they did with sutton and you will have a fastbreak advantage everytime.

I think the key to breaking the press is to get the ball into either one of two areas:  in the corners of the court at by the baseline or right at the corners of the half court line.  With the ball in either of those two spots, the player will be able to see the court in front of him much better.

that's one way, the other way to do it is to keep it out of the middle of the floor - which is the high traffic area.  in the middle of the floor the ball is more likely to be turned over.

Just lower your head and dribble as fast as you can up the right sideline.    The "Swartzendruber Sprint" as we called it in my day.   :cyclist:
