Title: Bob: "....Manhattan"

Stoops: Manhattan memories

For OU coach Bob Stoops, Saturday marked a triumphant return to Manhattan, where he served as an assistant under Bill Snyder from 1989-95.

And the trip also served up fond memories of that time.

“I do have special emotions here,” Stoops said. “I'm very fond of this place. It was a great time in my wife and I's life. I loved working with coach Snyder and all the people here.

“I still have great friends here that mean a lot to me. You don't spend seven years somewhere totally investing everything you have in trying to build it, and not care about it.”

Stoops and the retired Snyder met and chatted on the field before the game, recalling many of the good times building K-State up from ruins into a Big 12 contender.

“It was good to catch up and visit,” Stoops said. “We visited for a quite a while. I told him one of my favorite – including national championships, Big 12 championships, whatever – (memories) in my life is still the first win here, when we beat North Texas, coming from behind in the last minute to win. I'll never forget it.

“I never had been somewhere where you needed to win so bad. It helped get us started.”

I bet Stoops was friggin' p!ssed off at how Prince has wrecked what Snyder built as his team scored with ease.

Don't know if this has been posted already, but there was serious MHK love from Brent Venables, too.

You know what's sad, friends?  No one - not a soul - would believe us if we started pretending that KSU was passing the hat around to arrange for a $5M salary and a homecoming for Bob Stoops...even with this heart in Manhattan and everything.  :-[

Maybe that's why he unloaded 55 on us in the first half?  Just a little conspiracy theory for ya.

I think that GP and BV should have a "who enjoyed manhattan more?" reality show to determine which one gets to be our coach in 2009.  Would be great TV.

*Now that I think about it, it would be great "pub" if we made our coaching search a reality show.

Visors all over the place to boot.

We could just put a big "visor" veranda on the grassy knoll over looking the stadium.

Rent it out on gameday.

They could have a fashion show!

BV would dominate that when GP comes out in a black dri-fit-mock-turtleneck- t-shirt.

I see BV wearing an all black golfer's outfit (to go w/ visor) and looking very fashionable.  Nice polo, pants fitting well.

Then Krause and Snyder and fats (sipping Diet Coke) critique while sitting on director's chairs.  (Think Project Runway).

Would be a great show with BV constantly sleeping with higher ups wives, vacuming an eight ball a day and attempting suicide regularly.  The pub. would be glued to the set.  GP would, by all indications, barely have a speaking part in the show though.

So you're saying that those rages that Mike Stoops and Brent Venables used to throw on the KSU sidelines were fueled by "outside resources"??

There were times when I thought either one of them was going to self combust.

I'm not convinced we'd be in a different position today if we hired Venables instead of Prince.   Both hires would've been (were) massive "reaches" on unproven and unready young assistant coaches.   A BCS program can do far better than either one of them -- assuming said program is not run by imbeciles.

There is no way you can convince me that BV's wouldn't be a vastly superior recruiter than Ron Prince is.

You've got to have a baseline to "coach'm up" . . . there's no doubt in my mind that baseline under Venables would be much higher than what Prince is doing.

Also, Venables has been involved with ridiculously elite teams.

After GP, Venables is the best hire KSU can (should?) get IMO.  Mid major losers are overrated.

I don't see BV coming off as "creepy" or "weird" to high school recruits.

Heck no, and plus all the high school chicks will want to know who that "hottie" x football player was hanging out with.  BV won't have to leer and ask for numbers.

I know I am a broken record, but don't sell ourselves out of the Tommy Tuberville sweepstakes.

He's better than GP and makes BV look like Larry Smith.

I grow sour on TT.

When he hires their next OC (Provided he's still around) it will be Auburn's 11th coordinator in the last 6 years or so.

Dude wins 70% of his games.  And let's be honest, Petrino and Borges were great hires, and he really didn't fire the last guy.

He's been through quite a few DC's, too.  Non-issue.

Just a vibe.

Not all at that "hands on", plays favorites amongst coaches, "figurehead" football coaches don't work at schools like K-State.

I'd be much happier losing games with Brenven than I am with Coach Ron.

At least with Brent, we'd lose only close games.
