explaining how "Joe Montana in his prime couldn't have played well behind our o-line" or "Meier didn't have a chance to even get the ball off",
over at gopowercat (or here)
I will explode and I hope to take some of you (them) down with me.

You know Joe Namath, in all his greatness couldn't play well behind our O-Line.

I agree.

Was he really that bad?

Okay, I remember actually counting the seconds from snap to pressure/pass and I don't recall that many times being below 3 seconds. I know the benchmark is 4 seconds and on most of the throws that he made to our receivers feet he had that much time. Point being that he's just not a good quarterback, as anyone who's ever played can tell you, there's a big difference between being good in practice and good in a game. That being said I know I don't trust our offensive line enough to put Freeman back there.

Give the guy a break already. His arm is hanging on by a thread.

Then he needs to be enough of a leader to hang up the cleats and put on a headset. If he's out there playing then he opens himself up to ridicule whether he's healthy or not.

Good thing we're so deep and have plenty of experienced QB's.

So if KSU gets beat ... does someone from the other team get to direct the band??
-
Meier certainly wasn't good but the things that really made me cringe about his performance he largely got away with this past Saturday: throwing late over the middle, holding the ball too long, locking onto his receiver at the snap and never looking away, having no velocity on his passes, throwing into multiple coverage, badly missing receivers, etc. Most of those are completely on Meier, if he persists in this manner he'll be lucky if he throws less than a half dozen picks in any Big XII game ... or finishes one while conscious for that matter.

Exactly.

When your defense can't stop a Division IAA team I don't see the point in picking apart the performance of a quarterback who wasn't particularly bad and didn't make any plays that hurt us.

How long are we going to continue to make excuses for Dylan?

Til he graduates.

didn't make any plays that hurt us.
Completely wrong.
2 TURNOVERS!
3 or 4 ERRANT THROWS ON 3rd DOWN!!

Holy crap. I didn't realize he was that bad. Have we ever had a QB turn over the ball twice and throw 3 or 4 errant passes?

It was his first real game action in over, what a year and a half? He's gonna have some rust to knock off. I think if Prince really thought Meier couldn't play any better, than Freeman would be in there. I mean, Freeman is Prince's boy, he can't wait to put him in, but he must feel as of right now, that Meier can and will be better.
-
If Webb had a performance like Meier had, Cat fans would be calling for his head.
Would Webb have done any worse?
-
I haven't seen the game so I can't comment on the QB's perfomance directly but anytime you have problems rushing the ball like we did its going to make it much more difficult to throw the ball.

No, that is what people don't seem to understand about Meier.
The guy is fairly accurate on short throws to open receivers, that's it. 90% of quarterbacks in the country can also claim that feat. Sometimes guys aren't that accurate on short open throws, like Roberson in 2001, but even as a sophomore Roberson was capable of completing throws downfield, Meier has never been able to do it.
I guarantee Webb would have "made more plays" than Meier. Somehow, he would have done something to get us into the endzone; scramble, hit a deep throw, something.
Meier never has "made a play". He's not a winner.
That being said, I can't say Freeman is ready, but I am fairly certain that he wouldn't have looked any worse than Meier did saturday, and I tend to think he might have been better.

Now this is the excuse that I get tired of hearing. People make it sound like he hasn't throw a football or gone against a live defense in 2 years. Defenders of Meier, I hate to break it to you but he's been in practice and he's gone through drills and he's gone against our first team defense (I know that isn't saying much) so in all reality he should be ready to go. Whether you want to hear it or not this is Meier's ability level and it ain't good, at best he's a back-up quarterback and that's all he'll ever be.
-
I don't see the point in criticizing our defense when we have an offense that couldn't score a single TD against a I-AA team.
If Webb had a performance like Meier had, Cat fans would be calling for his head.
Would Webb have done any worse?
No, Webb would have done significantly better starting with the first play of the game where he would have taken the wide-open 8-10 yard run up the middle rather than lofting a weak-assed ball downfield late into double coverage.

Not likely. There is no QB run game in this offense.

Which sucks to no end. There was a nice gainer that would've either gotten a first down or set up a second and short and it was right there for the taking. Instead Meier sticks with the gameplan and pitches a 1st-play INT. Way to go Prince! Way to go Dylan! :banghead:

What is the point in dumping your quarterback because you only ran for 1.6 yards per carry.
-
In a WCO-style offense the pass sets up the run not the other way around. If you have a line that can pass block for 3+ seconds (check), receivers who aren't dropping many balls (check), RB(s) who can pick up a blitz (sort of check), and an even remotely decent QB (big &@#%in' red X here) those sorts of schemes can work, if not they won't. This type of offense starts and ends with a QB who can run it ... we don't have one.

Not having designed QB runs doesn't entail no QB scrambling. I say Dylan deserves all the blame here, regardless of what he's been coached to do.

Good point. Please only dump on Dylan because he sucks.

“I think the running game is a quarterback’s best friend. If a quarterback is ever going to have a chance to get on track we obviously we need to have a little more respect for our running game than what happened. - Ron Prince Press Conrerence

If we were running a "true" WCO and trying to set up the run with the pass don't you think we would have passed the ball more than we ran it? If you complete 58% of your passes, shouldn't that set up a little bit of a run game? Do we need to complete 80%?
Maybe, just maybe, the failure of the offense is not all Meier's fault.
Joe Dailey had games where he completed 25% of his passes and threw 4 INTs and NU never rushed for worse than 2 yards per carry.
-
Oh the run game most definitely sucked ass. I'm just tired of you 'tards swinging from Meier's nutsack. He's not a legit Big XII QB, period.

amen to that brother.

I don't think he's fantastic, but he is acceptable. My point is that our problems lie elsewhere.
-
The one thing I missed watching the Passport replay was QB run game and how effective it would have been against ISU. We could have scored had that threat been there. I know we don't have a great FB, but even a semi-good one would have taken pressure off the passing game and allowed us to have a greater impact. As much as we understood the option with Snyder, in this game, we'd have scored on offense with it.
-
I don't think he's fantastic, but he is acceptable.
No TDs and two INTs is "acceptable" against a I-AA defense? Having the #72 passing offense is "acceptable"? Being 90th ranked I-A team in passing efficiency is "acceptable" (Meier is #80 in the individual category)? Keep in mind that all of those "acceptable" performances were against a I-AA defense. They may improve somewhat next Saturday but it will be fool's gold because they'll nosedive thereafter. Those are some mightly low standards.
-
#72 is pretty good when you consider how bad the rest of the team is.
#103 rushing offense
#98 total offense
#89 passing defense
#48 rushing defense
#69 total defense
Our passing offense appears to be one of our strengths.

None of those are even remotely acceptable in my book, even worse when you consider the competition.

jeff schwinn would not have been able to complete a pass behind this line

no i get to strangle the refs for not calling a fair game :shy:
