I was talking to a guy at work the other day who had a relative who is one of the big developers in the Legends/Schitterbahn area and he said they were putting a sporting goods store in alongside Schitterbahn. Said it was going to be huge--big enough to put in a ferriss wheel, rifle range, and places to try out stuff. He didn't know the name, but it sounded kind of like an REI. Said it was being designed to put Cabela's out of business (yeah right), but would also sell baseball, football, etc. gear. Its just in the early stages of development, but it would make the area even crazier. I don't know if its an REI, that's just a guess of mine. If anyone has any ideas to share of what else it might be, feel free to post.
For those that don't know, they're building a Wal-Mart, Sams, Lowe's and I think Dicks north of Parallel. Right now its just dirtwork and utilities, but they'll probably get started building shortly.

That doesn't really sound like REI.
-
Maybe not, but its the only mega sporting goods place that I could think of that isn't already in KC.
-
I wonder if he got his wires crossed a little bit. A rumor I've been hearing is that they're going to be getting a "major national sports restaurant," which I'm assuming could be an ESPNZone.
-
alright im from the sticks... what is REI?
-
REI is a sporting goods store that focuses on the outdoors- climbing, biking, camping, etc. I'm pretty sure they do not sell hunting supplies, just recreational stuff. And they're nowhere near as big as cabellas. The only thing I can think of would be a Bass Pro Shop or maybe a Gander Mountain.

Went to an REI right outside downtime denver--I was very impressed. I like the place but I can't really see it going over here. Climbing? uh no, Camping? ok some, but not that much..most people are wussies and bring a camper. Biking, you could argue that it is fairly popular but again, not nearly as popular as the Rockies area. /shrug

REI is the kind of place that sells sporting goods for all the sports you can't do in Kansas.
-
if there's one thing that kansas city needs, its more chain/big box stores. really, the 700 or so Dick's Sporting Goods in the metro can be so bothersome to trackdown. just an imo folks.
-
When that area crashes and burns it's going to be really, really ugly.
-
I don't think that will happen for quite a while.

yeah, the nascar track got a casino. think about that for a sec.

Living nearby as I do, it actually kind of bothers me. I always hear on the news about fights and people getting shot at the misery casinos. This one will probably attract eastern WyCo's best citizens as well. When that kind of crowd starts gathering at the Legends frequently, I don't see as many families going there to hang out. Add in the wal-mart, and, bleh. Although I will probably go to the wal mart because it will be about 2 miles closer than the next closest full grocery store.
There's also huge crap from all this coming my way if Leavenworth (and probably eventually Wyandotte) County gets their way. But I'll talk more about that huge pork project later if it starts to come to fruition.

LOL. When's the last time you've heard this?

was thinking the same thing, the casinos are probably the safest "attractions" in kc, mo.

Probably heard 3 or 4 since I moved here in July.

Always count on Negative Nancy to lift our spirits!
anyways...
For the record, Dirty Sanchez, I only recall a couple issues around here and I live pretty damn close to the casinos. The ones I can think of are:
The brawl that was in the night club of Voodoo [not the casino - harrah's]
I think I remember something at ameristar with one of the dealers getting robbed/raped or kidnapped but I can't remember which....it wasn't a casino nut, it was some psycho who had been stalking her at home and followed her to work or something.
I'm not going to make it seem like it doesn't raise crime though, I'm sure it does. However, you make it sound like these people from east KCK can afford to drive out there and harass everyone.

The dotte is white people's ghetto. Building stuff just gives them places to hide.

Not really in the northwest part. Still a few farmers out here, some being some pretty large landowner (my in-laws own 200+ acres). Lots of other suburbanite areas with overbearing soccer moms and dads. There are spots of white trash, that's for sure, and the trash/thug/ghetto population is moving out. My wife is seeing this first hand in relation to the schools she works with. Has changed a lot since she was growing up.

The sports store going in at Schlitterbahn is a Scheels. If want to know anything else about Schlitterbahn let me know, I have inside info.

Like 2011 for the part that anyone actually wants. The advertised "summer 2009" is the part that no one cares about.
