I should have known better, but I decided to give Casa Agave a shot. I used to know it as El Cazador back in the day (and it was terrible then, absolutely awful) and during my stay in Manhattan I tried to get the run out of business. Now that I am back, I saw it was no longer there and felt better about the citizens of Manhattan. Alas, as soon as I walked in I knew it was the same place with a new name. It actually got worse. Oregano in the salsa? That, my friends, is a crime worthy of death by "rat cage to the face". Why oh why do all of the Mexican restaurants in Manhattan suck so bad? (Chipotle is the only saving grace).
I also checked out Los Potrillos and it was terrible as well. I hear that it used to be good in Salina, but not anymore.
Texas Star? Bland and inoffensive is about the best I can say.
Carlos? Yeah right.
So what gives? I am just missing the good places?
-
You're totally off about El Cazador's
-
El Cazador was the Sudan of the Mexican-Food Earth.
-
Cazador was great. Too many run ins with ICE got it shut down. It was the same mex food you could get and any of 1000 restaurants in the state--same menu. La Fiesta out at Tuttle Creek Blvd east of the stadium is essentially the same menu. Loved going there on game days because you didn't have to wait over an hour to sit.
Potrillos was crap. My dad and I went there one time and he got something that was supposed to have some kind of thing with mexican veggies mix. He got what appeared to be a bag of Green Giant frozen oriental mixed vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, etc) over rice with a semi-mexican sauce.

That pretty much sums up why Mexican food outside of southwest kansas sucks. If I had some money I would open up a good mexican restaurant, but I am pretty sure I would go out of business in a month since it would be completely different than what people have come to expect. Maybe I should contact that Booyah! guys I could make ĦEl Booyah!

For some reason Omaha has some off the chain mexican places...best I have eaten north of Dodge City.

-
coco bolos burritos are delicioso :lick: imo
Yes, coco bolos is very good.
-
i like their sangria
-
Oh yeah, I have to give Bolos some props. Not exactly mexican, but pretty damn tasty still. The bolo beans or whatever they call them are subpar, but the rest is pretty good. Their sangria is very good (the red is better).
Their black and white pizza is pretty effing awesome (phenom with XX amber).

Also best breakfast in town when they do the brunch thing :lick:
-
never tried the white 'gria.
i was sitting there at the bar one night drinking and bryan reese drunk drove his jeep right into the wall where the booths are, the wall bubbled in about 3 inches. was great.
-
I remember when I took this one girl I had a major "thing" for to Bolos on a date when it first opened. The food took forever so we had lots of time to talk which was good, but the smoke ventilation wasn't perfected yet, so we both got pretty coughy. I tried to use my napkin to cover my mouth and I knocked over my water glass on her and made a huge mess. Needless to say that night was spent alone :-[
I bought new shoes and everything for that date.

why do all of the Mexican restaurants in Manhattan suck so bad?
great question. my guess is it has to do with the lack of mexicans.

Obvious correct answer

Imitation Mexican food is better than real imo.
-
Imitation Mexican food is better than real imo.
Just depends. I know i'm not getting "authentic" mex when i'm hitting Potrillos or El Mezcal, but for under 10 bucks I can get a couple cheap margaritas and a combo meal and go home feeling like death.
-
Imitation Mexican food is better than real imo.
Coco Bolos is imitation and delicious. Both can be great or suck imo.

It's not even an imitation attempt, it's more like using mexican food as inspiration (this is good imo).
I don't care what's authentic as long as it tastes good. pancho's on Main (discussed at 'PAK'R) in KC is my fave in the world.

Sorry brauiauaua, your vote doesn't count because you weren't there to cast it. pancho's won the best KC mexican food award 2 votes to none.

And the faster a joint gets their food out, the less chips and salsa is used.
-
beans, cheese - both cheap
-
Beans are cheap. Cheese is not. Have you looked at the price of it at the store lately? Its like $7 for a block of mediocre sharp cheddar.
-
La Fiesta is the best.
Yeah, if you're already completely sh*tfaced, or don't have taste buds.
Bolos, ftw!
-
I always hated El Caz but knew tons of peeps that loved it, WTF.
In KC/Joco mi ranchito is my fave, not all that authentic although there is some, the old one in Olathe many of the wait staff doesn't even really speak english. Espinaca grilled chicken enchiladas are fab.

1. Pfffffffffffft.
2. Lots and lots of LIQ in this thread. You guys don't know REAL mexican food. You probably think that you can handle really hot hot sauce, too, but you don't know what REAL really hot hot sauce is either.
3. Taco Bell is as good as any of those fake Mexican places that have been mentioned. Try some REAL Mexican food (see #1 and then #2).
4. The Booyah guy can't help. He's broke as a joke, essay.

If anyone wants to start a thread about some REAL Mexican food, that would be cool. I've seen enough about this fake Mexican food. Time to shut it down, amigos.

amigos
Not bad imo

The best mexican food ever in Manhattan, La Casa de las Vera.
Homemade food :lick:
-
personally I'm not a big fan of real mexican food.

Never go to Omaha if you like Mexican food. I miss El Caz and La Fiesta.

You are a retard. We have suprisingly good and authentic (whichever you like). Have you been to Hector's? Roja? Nette's?

If you don't mind a trip to the 'burbs Mi Ranchito is very solid. Jalapenos is ok if you order the Jalapeno Dip Burrito.
Most overrated? The Salty Iguana. Just horribly mediocre.
-
Hmm my parents love Salty Iguana, but mexican options in Leawood have really gone downhill since Taco Via went out of business.
El Caz was an absolute staple. Number 2 going in and going out, please!

Mi Ranchito has a few locations I'm told, but the one I'm familiar with is 119th and a bit west of Pflumm in Olathe.

If street names were the #1 reason JOCO sucked, that'd be incredible.
-
I just had Salsaritas in the k-State Union...meh. I could make anything they have at home. Similiar in price to Chipotle, which is much better. Manhattan needs a Taco Bueno....muchachos are awesome.
-
KC has great Mexican food. Just get outta JOCO and head down Southwest Trafficway and pick one. Stay out of Ponak's it's the white people mecca for mexican. Try either Taqueria Mexico, or literally EVERY restaurant that says OPEN. They are all good. The salty iquana is like sit down taco bell. Dos Reales is ok, but the good stuff is on Southwest Trafficway from rainbow past I-35. Decent BBQ also. I highly recommend this route before heading to the P&L District for a night.

It's Southwest Boulevard, not Trafficway, and they all pretty much blow. TM is pretty good, but the rest of them are glorified crap. :flush:
-
There's a ranchito on 95th and I 35, just west of the highway and the north side of 95th street.
-
that's prob the easiest to get to from my location, i'll give her a shot Sunday for lunch.
-
The INS came one time when I was eating at El Caz and took out like 5 workers. Not lying.

Who has the best margaritas? Nothing better than a good margarita. Well, that's not true, but they are kind of good sometimes.

La Fiesta. It's the only thing good there. I think that they're half off on Monday nights. Pretty tasty and they make them strong.
Bolos' sangria is some good sh*t too. Better than a 'rita, imo.

2 weeks ago I stopped by taco mayo and ordered a meal. They mistakenly handed me 12 tacos. I gave them back but they said I could keep them. So I got my meal AND 12 tacos. 8-)

serious. I do like the Jalisco chimi though. The cream cheese lada's make me feel like I'm eating mexican cheescake or something.
-
hi guys, talk to me about their chips, how think/thin are they?
how is their salsa? chunky? loaded with cilantro?

The chips are very intelligent, average thickness and pretty decent.
Salsa is average to thick with plenty of cilantro.
Again, cream cheese chicken enchiladas FTW.
Margaritas are solid too.

Not familiar. Never had a bad menu item there, though, so this will be my next venture.

'clams loves cilantro. I've seen him eat a big bunch of it like a carrot.
-
listen, i meant how THICK ok?
anywho. i generally eat a large bulbous sprig of cilantro with my grape nuts every morning. need it. it's fuel. ripped fuel.
love those thin chips too. hate the thick ones though boys - HATE the thick ones. i bet i wouldnt' even eat them LMAO.
thoughts on thin vs. thick chips?
-
Thin chips are the way to go.
-
Thin chips are the way to go.
yup, my favorite in kc are at cactus grill/jose peppers
-
Thin chips are the way to go.
They beak off in the dip/salsa. Thick ftw.
-
the salsa and food in general is loaded with cilantro.
Jalisco chimi is killer, is topped with cream cheese and Jack melted on top. I think it's filled with fajita stuff but can't quite remember.
-
La Fiesta is probably the best in Manhattan...but that isn't saying much.
Oddly, I went to a place in Marysville, KS called Las Cabanas and it kicked anything in Manhattan all to hell. It was really good food. They had a great salsa recipe too. That is a big one in my book.
In order of importance:
1. Lots of cumin
2. Quality beef and chicken
3. a non-rank Enchilda sauce
in that order
-
i'm pretty tired of mexican food, tbh.
-
Thin chips are the way to go.
They beak off in the dip/salsa. Thick ftw.
Really CD? Are you sure about that???
Do they really beak off?
Are the chips birds? Do they fly around the restaurant and regurgatate food into your mouth for you?
LMAO at CD3333333333333333. "I eat bird food! I'm catfannnnn33333. Meooooooooow?!?!??? "
FWIW- I don't mean any of the above

I've always liked El Caz (Agave is the same place and mostly the same staff.) We also like La Fiesta. Dave, where are the good places in Omaha? We haven't heard of anything good that is out of the ghetto.
