Title: Best leftovers?
Post by: waks on August 20, 2008, 04:28:43 AM
Obviously pizza. I've found that Mexican food is usually fairly decent upon reheating. Chipotle is especially good, even left cold.

Foods that suck as leftovers... hamburgers tend to blow after they've been refrigerated. Chinese food is also mediocre after you reheat it.

GREAT - Indian food, Chili.  Both seem to get better...

Good - Pizza, Italian

Bad - Fries, Sushi, Salads w/ dressing

One caveat on Mexican food: if it has a hard tortilla it sucks.  Just no way to keep those from going limp.

I've also found that stuff that is all mixed together like stews, meatloaf, meat sauce and other pasta sauces, etc. seems to get better with a little fridge time.  I think it allows the ingred. to really mingle and get to know each other.

You are right on w/ chili. You can reheat chili and eat by itself w/ you favorite toppings, on hot dogs, on nachos, in a burrito, on a frito chili pie, etc.

Chili is by far the best bang for your buck when it comes to leftovers imo.

Couldn't agree more.  Chicken Tikka Masala is better the next day, as is Biryani.

I am almost to the point where I won't even bother eating Chili until it has been in the fridge and re-heated.

"mingle"

chinese and hamburgers are both great when reheated, not sure wtf is wrong with you.
all italian food is great- spaghetti, lasagna, shells/red sauce, etc, all great

pizza sucks reheated.  fracking gross imo.  i'd rather wipe my ass with it then eat it after it's been refrigerated.

mashed potatos are good reheated

Don't forget the gravy...gravy is always thicker and better after an overnight refrigeration.

Yeah, it's almost like the molecular structure of the pizza is altered if heated up too much in the microwave. It gets the crust too hard/chewy/weird. The alternative is to eat cold, heat up just a little in the microwave or use the oven to fully reheat the pizza. Room temp Pizza is really good.

Curry or any type of pasta dish is really good warmed up.

Cold pizza, chilis/goulashes obviously, meatloaf sandwiches FTW.

Let's get some clarification on the hamburger situation. If it is cook on the grill, but not placed on a bun, it is reheatable. If it has the bun on it in the fridge, it is no longer worthy of a second heating. Breads and grease are an awful thing to place in a fridge together.

Yep, ours was just ok after a year in the really cold box. It's an overrated tradition. Much better to eat the cake while it's still fresh.

They remind me of going to a white castle and getting a sack full of the ones that aren't as fresh.  Not bad - but not "as" good.

For saving your wedding cake....did you guys feed each other when you defrosted it?  I mean "feed" literally, and not metaphorically.

Chinese food can be pretty crappy the next day.

My place of choice is Chinese Chef and I always get #25.

So of course I eat all of mine but if someone else leaves theirs in the fridge I will eat theirs too. However, rice gets hard and crappy. Sauce gets all gelatinous. Plus its usually only like three pieces of chicken so I pop two of those into my mouth cold on the way to the m-wave. So I'm left with one chicken piece left and am I going to reheat that? GMAFB, so I end up eating it all cold and gelatiny.

WTF, big mistake IMO. I'd rank pizza quality as follows:

1. Hot, fresh out of oven

2. Cold, straight out of fridge. Best when served as breakfast.

3. Fully reheated in oven

4. Fully reheated in microwave

5. Slightly reheated aka ass-barf.  :barf:

Then you obviously didn't package it right.  We had ours wrapped in a couple layers of Saran Wrap and sealed in a Tupperware container.  It was just as good the next year as it was on day 1.

Agree with the stews and soups.  A good pot of veggie beef soup really gets its best flavor after it has been sitting around for a day.
