Post by: cas on August 13, 2008, 12:09:54 PM
Anyone ever been, things to see to do?

Going to watch the Yankees vs. Royals on Saturday. That should be kinda cool.

I know a guy that will be there for that game as well!  Don't get on a subway train unless you are sure it is going in the right direction would be my only advice.  I have only spent time (non-taxi cab time) in Manhattan so the outer burroughs are pretty much a scary mystery to me.

Also, is not as smelly as you would think!

Prolly, but wasn't too bad when I've been.  But, you will be there in summer and I've only been in October and November so maybe the cold kept the stank down.  I disagree with that it is a sh*thole, mrs. dave and I like it well enough and I pretty much hate smelly and gross things.

The subway's not as nice as the DC Metro, but it's also not as bad you'll expect.

Don't drink the water.  Oh wait, that's Mexico.

"Top of the Rock" might be less crowded than Empire St Building.
South Street Seaport, Battery park.  Kick back with a view of the harbor.
New Jersey.  Like heaven, but different.

NYC, what a great city.  I grew up in New York and will comment further when I get some time.

Doing that. Sounds like it should be pretty good. I'm like, somewhat terrified of heights, so vertigo might be a factor.

I was too scared to use the subway when my wife and I visited last summer.  Luckily when we arrived on the street out of Penn Station there were tens of people selling tour bus tickets.  They were about a million dollars apiece but we got to see the whole city, visit the SoL, and go up into the Empire State Building.  If you're not visiting with someone who knows their way around, its good idea.

Only problem, native New Yorkers point and laugh at people riding on top of tour bus.  :frown:

I'm staying at the New York Marriott Downtown. 85 West Street at Albany Street. It looked pretty nice. I'll be there for 4 days.

be sure to wear the "purps" cs, and give me an airport review when you get back (pm if necessary)

Will do on wearing purple. Have a good shirt picked out. Flying out of Denver tomorrow straight to Laguardia. Really pissed that we have no layovers or stuff like that. Denver's airport is always solid though.

Yeah man.  You will be right in the thick of it.  We usually stay about 35th and 7th Ave.  Anywhere S of C. Park is where everything is at (from my LNYIQ experience).

so you have to drive to DIA from SC? ouchies.

I have a 4 hour layover in DIA for my trip to the bay area!  :woohoo:

Well it's the parents anniversary present, so I guess we decided to go. Never have been to Yankee Stadium and since it's the last year and all. Also haven't been to NYC in a long time. My dad I guess has really always wanted to go to Yankee Stadium and stuff and see MSG and all of that so that played a part too.

Yeah, that's the part that always sucks when you want to go somewhere. Flying out of Garden City is really expensive and they have weird flight hours, like leaving 4 AM. I guess I got used to driving a longtime to go anywhere since MHK is about 4 hours from SC.

Last time I went to N.Y. I met Mike Jones in La Guardia. :shy:

Try to stop by & eat @ Planet Hollywood in times square. Pretty cool location. Ask for a table by the window where you can look out at times square.

Also, ESPN Zone is fun.

I swear I have a fetish for N.Y., it's weird.

I never even saw a White Castle in NYC.  Also, don't fly all the way to NYC and eat at a chain rest.  Clams will have tons of good places to suggest I'm sure.  We ate at this Brazillian steakhouse and it was redic. good:

You can stand inline right by time square at, like, 3 pm and get half priced broadway tickets for that night's showings.  Should be able to get in for POTO imo.  Your family can take the money they save and buy me something nice!

The QB game is frickin' awesome but if you play it too long (and I recommend you do) you will barely be able to dress yourself the next morning.

Top of the Rock is way better IMO. No waiting in line for hours.

I also recommend the tour of Yankees stadium, you'll probably have to be at the stadium by about 8 am to get a ticket, but they're only $20 and the tours are 7 days a week. They take you to the press box, monument park, out on the field, in the dugouts and into the locker rooms in about an hours time. ESPN Zone is also sweet, recommend eating on the 2nd floor (so many TVs). It's in Times Square so you can see all the other things there too.

Terminal C at Newark totally pwns the other 2.  lol @ "A" and "B". lol.

Meh...terminal A ftw. B is international.

Subways aren't bad at all, they don't smell as of a week ago, and I don't think are too hard to navigate in, took one from Yankee stadium to Battery park (cool view), which is basically down all of the island, without a hitch. The taxis are nice but a bit too expensive if you going more than 20 blocks IMO. Grand Central is worth a look if you dont come in there and have time.

Well, after a long weekend in NYC, I can say that it was one of the best trips I have ever taken.

Highlights:

Well the flight to NYC was less than spectacular. It left late for whatever reason, and then with the storms at LaGuardia we had to basically fly around in circles for 30 minutes and then land in Newburgh, NY to refuel. So that bascially ruined any plans I had for Thursday afternoon/night.

Started Friday bright and early and went to the Sports Museum of America (just opened in the spring) pretty cool stuff, def. recommend. You can touch the Heisman and stuff. Went to Ground Zero Museum/"Workshop", it is basically a self guided tour. They have pictures of all sorts of things from 9-11 and you hit the number on the picture on the remote and you listen to the guy talk. Then we walked around Time Square. I bought this CD from some random rapper for 3 dollars and went to the ESPNZONE for like 2 hours and killed time. From there we went onto Phantom of the Opera, it was pretty cool.

Saturday we started out pretty early to go to they Yankees vs. Royals game. Got a couple of auto's and talked to a few of the players. Yankee Stadium is pretty much what I expected, a lot of history there. Enjoyed the game, although the Royals lost in 13 innings it was cool, and we got our monies worth. Went to the Top of the Rock, it really is a different perspective of things when you are up that high. We went at night so we say all the lights and whatnot.

The flight back was good, flew on Frontier (great airline). I was so tired I just slept on the plane all the way back. Annoying jap kept kicking my seat. So I just reclined even more.

As for the airports, DIA is just phenomenal. Plain and simple the nicest airport I've been to. LaGuardia is a total dump, I hear JFK is even worse. Dunkin Donuts are slowly taking over the east coast.

I'm probably leaving out something, if you have any questions say the word.

Yep. You have to pay I think like $5 for it. You also get ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and some other pretty good channels. LSU-Auburn was on ESPNU on the way down. Being on that airplane for about 7 hours was the best money I've ever spent.

Frontier is really likable.  And hub at DIA?  Awesome.   Little TVs?  Cool.  But the cutest thing is getting your own f*cking animal mascot for each flight.  Those f*ckers all have cute nicknames, too.

will you guys make fun if I give an airline/aiport review? well, must do it n e ways.

airlines: delta >> frontier. Frontier does have the individual animal (cute) but they no longer offer a live map for free!!! Delta gave a flippin sweet live map where they zoom in real close, and if you're "aisling" it's pretty much the tits. Delta also had a "in-flight" trivia where you can play vs the other passengers and you can view their seat. Unfortunately some indian dude kept destroying, so I exited after a few games. He was a few rows away and he knew he was beating me and was loving every minute of it.

airports: atl >> dia >> sjc. btw, you can tell DIA and ATL hate each other big-time. despite the fact they are gigantic airports, and that they offer about 8 LCD's worth of arrivals alone, there is alone one flight between the two pretty much all day. I couldn't help but LOL @ that. My God guys, at least don't let it be so obvious.  pretty much every single commerical business @ ATL was run by black people, so it made for some interesting purchases. Nothing like seeing a fat white lady buying 15 bucks worth of latte's @ starbuck where tyrone makes 6 bucks an hour. DIA and ATL were very close, but I give the nod to atlanta because it's just mammoth! (big, large) San Jose is terrible. You wanted to give it a hug, but in all fairness, they are constructing a new terminal which should make for some interesting posturing by SFO and Oakland if you ask me.
