Another walk-on (AD) made this year's roster. VO played last year and "step-laddered" (aka, pwn3d) one of ku's scholly athletes iirc. i think 1-877-386-5366 is in TReed's speed dial.

Here's a little tidbit about AD and his ability, even if a walk-on:
Anthony Downing got his name on the map when he scored a game-high 25 points against Travis Releford's Miege team earlier this season. Releford, also a junior, is ranked fourth in nationally at shooting guard by Scout.com.
"It felt pretty good to play against someone with that big of a name who is being recruited by Duke and all that," said Downing, who was guarded by Releford throughout the game. "It felt good outscoring him and it gave me the confidence that I can play with anybody."

The Downings from Atchison . . . I wonder how many in that county now have that surname?
Chic was something to watch in the '60s both at AHS then Benedictine. Still think the Knicks made a mistake opting him to Allentown, except they were still loaded in those seasons.

That's good to hear Anthony is walking-on and to see a fellow Redman on the roster -- he's obviously smarter than many of his ku loving cousins.
Good bbiq and bloodlines: Of course there's his gramps, Chic, and his dad, Cougar, played PG at Maryland.
A walk-on at K-State is better than arguably ku's highest profile recruit this year!

Ok, all Atchison posters check-in:
We got Charlie Don't Surf and BrotherDDay.
I'm AHS class of 1975...
BTW, Matthew "Chic" Downing was assistant coach in the 1974-75 season.

In addition to the all the Downings that were featured in SI last year, 7 or 8 or however many that were on the AHS bb roster, I experienced another Downing all over the place moment a few weeks ago in Larrytown while watching a nephew playing in an MAYB tournament.
Victor Downing, refed the nephew's game I watched.
During the game, either Keith or Kevin Downing - one of those twins who used to give aTm coach Turd fits back in the HS days - walked-in to ref the following game.
Walking out of Flaw on the Kaw Central JH after the game, Cougar was running into the gym with Anthony's bro so he could play in the next game.
BTW, class of '91 - Chic's last year of coaching. AHS sucked at bb... crappy way for him to go out.

cyclist: Whatever became of Micky Jackson from AHS?

Played with Cougar and the last Championship team in '88. Chic did the best thing he could by staying for that last year. Otherwise people would have been calling for Coach P's head after the first year.
Was told at my class reunion that AD was coming to KSU and that Underwood was the one that sold him into walking on. He had offers at Valley schools.
Also heard that AHS would likely have not won a game without Anthony last year. Hopefully the new coach, kurtis Downing, can get AHS back to where we were in the 80's.

Last I knew, he was a pitcher in the A's organization -- that was about 25 years ago! Micky's dad gave my dad a trading card of his at the time. I remember the card reaking of afro sheen and it made the rest of my card collection as a kid smell like afro sheen.

I played baseball against him in the summer of 76. He went to Hutch Juco and played basketball and baseball. I think he transferred after one year to a school in California... San Jose State?
I saw him nail a kid with a fastball that split the helmet in two, and the ball landed past second base in centerfield.

Don't forget about Par Downing. Pretty good ball player in his own right. I think I read years ago that he went on to play in the Ivy League. Can anyone confirm?

Par spent two years at a juco, then went on to play for Columbia. Told me one time that he "held" J.R. Rider to 25-30 pts. in one of his first games in juco ball. He wasn't pleased with his defense, but that ended up being one of Rider's lower scoring games that year.

The Name Game
Seven Downings on one team? It's no coincidence

ATCHISON HIGH
Atchison, Kans.
Matthew (Chic) Downing, a 57-year-old retiree, grabbed a good seat inside the Atchison (Kans.) High gym last Thursday, a spot just a few feet from the home bench. It was senior night for the Redmen boys' basketball team, and Downing had plenty to celebrate as Atchison prepared to meet Pembroke Hill. He clapped for his youngest son, Jaurrice, the first senior announced. The elder Downing then applauded two of his cousins, Ryan and Joshua, who were also playing their final regular-season home games. And he smiled widely when two more relatives -- grandson Anthony and cousin Charles Ford-Downing, both juniors -- completed the starting unit. "We've had a lot of Downings play for Atchison over the years, maybe as many as 35," Chic said. "But this is the most we've ever had on one team."
In all, seven of 12 players are Downings, including two sets of brothers and an uncle who is 10 months older than his nephew. This group shares not only a name but also an expectation that they carry on a tradition in this northeast Kansas town of 10,169 people.
In the mid-1950s Chic's uncle, Carl, was the first Downing to play for the school. A decade later Chic became a two-time all-state player who would go on to coach the Redmen from 1974 to '91, winning four state titles, including two with teams that featured Jaurrice's older brothers, Matthew Jr. and Clifford. "We hear about it weekly," Jaurrice says of the championship teams. Adds Joshua, "We tell those guys that we're a better team. They always say we haven't won any titles yet."
That could change. Despite losing 59-43 to Pembroke Hill, the Redmen (15-4) were strong contenders to reach the state 4A finals. (The postseason began on Monday.) Whatever happens, Chic Downing says, he's delighted with the family tradition. "These kids could be doing a lot of other things, but they're out there playing together. That's something I'll always be proud of."
