My ipod froze at the do not disconnect screen

My computer no longer recognizes it.

Any help/ideas?

if you cant reset it then just let the battery die on its own. could the rest of the day, then plug it back in.  at least that has always worked for me and mine freezes all the time.

true, but sometimes when it freezes up the factory reset won't even work.

For future reference toggle hold switch on then off then hold your center button along with menu and it should restart itself.
