I would like to root for Nadal but the dude wears capris for crap sakes.....just a bit too homoerotic imo

Federer is awesome but his personality is kind of bland.  American tennis players as a whole pretty much suck.

I would go ahead and say that I normally wouldn't care as much as I do this year because it is usually fairly predictable that Fed would walk away with the win, but this year I think Nadal has a great chance at grabbing the title. It should be an exciting match to watch.

American tennis players as a whole pretty much suck.

you bite your tongue. American players are just in lull of the spotlight. Soon we will be back on top.

It's impossible to interview a guy when he's essentially just been stunned and hot have a bit of awkwardness. I don't think anyone cold have done a better job than mcenroe.

But tennis press conferences are by far most awkward things. Watch them sometimes, the people who cover tennis ask the most strange/quirky questions .

Federer losing absolutely blows.

As anyone in inner tennis circles knows. Federer is the better athlete and human being. If Federer doesn't keep bringing in championships, countless Roma will go hungry. Bank on it.

Nadal probably spends his money on booze.

serve and volleying is a cowards game. it's not tennis.

And is there a better feeling than a passing shot? or a ridic sexy lob?
Title: Re: Fatty (& other tennis fans that I don't know of)
Post by: asava on July 09, 2008, 04:48:17 PM
yes. a well read attempted passing shot for a drop volley or angled volley. or when someone messes up on their beautiful lob because you engineered a great approach shot and you put the overhead away. obviously you have been dominated several times by the serve & volley game, this is why you blame it on cowardism. serve and volleying is one of the best statements a player can make while playing tennis. it shows power, finess, control, speed, and an ability to control you opponent. it also is one of the hardest things, imo, to do, and to do well, in tennis.

if you're tall and strong, you charge the net. eventually, it become obvious you have no baseline skill, as there is not much skill involved with a net game. You just f-ing punch your racquet out there. The issue w/timing (the single biggest reason that makes you a great tennis player) isn't really required when you are @ the net.

Pete Sampras: 6'1" 170 lbs

Roger Federer: 6'1" 194 lbs

you don't have be a big dumb oaf like safin to dominate the up and back game. you also can be a big guy and dominate at the line.

if you are telling me that timing has nothing to do with coming up at the net then i have no idea what you are talking about. you're reaction time is cut in half, if not more. combine that with the fact that you are charging the net, reading your opponents racket, split stepping, and generally putting the ball away, and the backcourt game is no comparison. playing at the net requires way more touch and finess.

on top of that playing beyond the baseline is largely considered a defensive position in the fact that most points are going to be coming from unforced errors rather than winners. winners come from the baseline on short balls (just beyond the service line), or volleys that fall well short of their mark, allowing for a passing shot (even then thats a defensive winner).

There is no swing with a volley game. You're not generating anything. If you are @ the baseline and you hit the ball any bit behind you, you've mis-hit it. If you hit the ball w/perfect timing (your feet in the right position as well) it's going wherever you've directed it.

Good lord dude. I can't believe you think more skill is involved w/a net game. Why do you think the crappy players just rush the net? BECAUSE IT'S EASY TO HIT.

And Samprass was a bad-ass all-around, btw. Of course, fed or nadal would kick his ass in 2008.

Title: Re: Fatty (& other tennis fans that I don't know of)
Post by: asava on July 09, 2008, 05:41:15 PM
you do know that it takes essentially the same type of racket position to put the ball cross court or down the line with a volley or a ground stroke. if you are behind on a volley you will miss-hit just as you would on a ground stroke, except for the fact that you have a much shorter time to react to the ball.

Quote

even less room for error when it comes to volleys.

case in point is andy roddick. if he was able to put his serve together with a great net game, something that he has been struggling with his entire career, and has never been able to do it, he would be competeing with federer, or at least challenging him more.

crappy players rush the net and can't finish what they started. players like sampras, becker, and laver all had great net games and dominated with it.

as far as federer goes, he has that touch, he just plays a much more balanced game because he doesn't quite have the forehand or the blasting serve that those other players had.

and for nadal, he is an an athletic freak who is fast enough to get any ball on the court, along with get himself into position to hit great shots.

i think sampras, in his prime, would beat both nadal and federer. especially against a game like petes that highlighted his strenghts and took away opponents defenses. in fact i think sampras has played federer since he has retired and beaten him. even though it was during some charity outing or something.

You pretty much have no time to react to the ball. That's why there is little skill involved. You stick your raquet up and use your opponents power to drive the ball a few f-ing feet. Yes, there IS skill involved, but ask a person who has never played tennis to stand 5 feet from the net and hit your shots vs hitting a true stroke at the baseline. They would have no clue how to swing at the ball.

The true skill w/ s&v game is your approach shot. If your approach shot sucks, you're done. If you come in at the wrong time, you're done. Your approach shot is a baseline shot. It all starts with your stroke which takes years to craft.

My point about s&v'ing being a cowardly way has more to do with the juniors game (which you never played, I know cheap shot..but true). If you were tall and strong, you could pretty much own jr's by s&v'ing. It didn't matter that their ground strokes were laughable, and that was frustrating.

i've been playing for 17 years was ranked in montana and arkansas when i lived there. chose not to play in the missouri valley because i was a senior in highschool by the time i was oriented. so no, its not true.

not only have i done that but i was a teaching pro for 4 years under 2 different head pros. if you have more qualifications i'd like to know. if not, don't talk about a professional game like its played by juniors.

Funny stuff...

Quote
When Chang stalled in the rankings, unable to get over the final hump, he attempted to transform himself from a grinder to a power player. To great fanfare, he had his racket company, Prince, design a stick that was one inch longer than the industry standard. It improved his serving angle but also reminded everyone that Chinese guys had to compensate for genetic shortcomings besides our height. Where did Prince add that inch of length? To the shaft, naturally.
