If Hawaii counts... then Hawaii. It really is like you expect it to be.

If there is somewhere that has lots of college girls with great bodies and fake knockers that wear very little cloing I'd say that place.

Too many skinheads and Mexicans. It's also pretty hot from what I hear.

california. at least if you can afford it.
this going to be a very cliche driven thread. all the state's with great reps have great reps for solid reasons.
-
Cali prob has the widest range of climate and physical features and wildlife. probably go with California.
-
New Jersey.

Hawaii is just freakin amazing. The air smells awesome all the time. People are very nice. Nobody has a lot of "stuff" because it all has to be shipped in so the lifestyle is different and imo awesome. Very good cultural mix. Everything is very laid back/non-hectic. Food not as expensive as you would think but not the selection you get on the mainland. Everyone's house looks really crapty so if your house is actually crapty nobody can tell from the outside. I plan on moving there when Mrs. Dave gets done with school, won't happen but I still plan on it.
-
Oklahoma. You can go to Applebee's and be considered one of the "rich folk."
-
California.

Oregon, in the Cascades for moderate temps in winter but close enough to drive out to the coast any time you feel like it. Eugene would be a great location. Prettiest views of anywhere, clean clean clean, clear fresh pine sented air, beautiful array of floura and fauna, wild rasberries to chew, OGB (oregon green bud), microbrews galore, big tittied babes abound, and the people are friendly and fun. Go west young man.

Honestly throughout my travels I think that all things considered, the best place to live would probably be Miami if you want to live by the sea (I'm biased because of the Latin flavor, if you hate that get out)
Geographically, the Southeastern U.S. (Tenn, N. Carolina) is everything you like about Kansas but with more trees and better weather/less wind (sticky hot, but you're used to that).
But overall the best views/landscapes imo is colorado. Just consistently awesome.
-
New York!!
Biggest City in the world, wide open undeveloped rural areas (where I am from), ocean frontage, river frontage, two mountain regions, crystal clear lakes, lots of winter activities; skiing in Lake Placid, snow mobiling, ice skating, fishing, snowshoeing, the largest state park in the US; the Adirondack Park. Wide variety, something for everyone.
Miss it :'(

Add my vote to Hawaii. Its rep is legit.
Colorado sucks ass until you actually get to the base of the mountains, and then it's awesome...for about 10 minutes. After that: meh.

Plenty of beaches, and not those pussy beaches with small little waves gently tickling your toes, but the kind that contain enormous energy and crash into the landmass that is the US in a spray of water and a roar in the air. So yeah, probably like nothern Cali, only better. It sure aint to pussyfied florida.

I'm sure I'd love N. Cali, just never been so I can only spout about Oregon. I actually did enjoy St. Pete, FLA beaches, loooots of eye candy, but not having seasonal changes in weather really bored me to no end. I never thought it would. I must admit that I miss thunderstorms when in OR, they aren't that common up there.

Yeah, I quit reading about 6 words in when I realized you thought the North Shore was in California. It's on Oahu fwiw.

I worked with a native of Hawaii in Oregon and he moved his family to the main land because of all the gang activity he said was rampant? And he was big, very big. In fact he taught football to the guy we got from there in grade school, fatafehi (sp?) maybe? His son was a starting linebacker at a smaller school in E. Oregon. These guys would not be afraid of much, but felt the need to move from there, fwiw. He said unless you are a native, your life is in jepardy every minute even if people don't know it. Is this not true?

No, it's not that bad at all. A friend of mine (skinny white kid) grew up on the big island, he said the natives were a little rough on the haoles but he dug the place anyway. That said you'll definitely see 300# drunken Hawaiian rednecks brawling in the parking lot before and after UH games. Just give 'em a wide berth and you'll be fine.

You realize that Tokyo is about 15 million people larger than NYC, right?
As far as best scenery I'd have to go with Colorado.

Away from the mountains isn't really scenic though.
Washington and Oregon are pretty good too.
Best city is NYC.
-
I would hate living in NYC. Cost of living is a bitch too.
Better cities to live in? Chicago, Milwaukee, Austin, Denver, Miami.

If money weren't an issue then NYC is the best city. No contest.
Chicago = bueno
Austin is full of Texans but the music scene is excellent
Denver = bueno
I don't have any idea for Milwaukee and I've never been to Miami but all accounts say it sucks.
How about Portland, Boston or San Francisco?

For me NYC is too much crap. I've been, I've liked it, but I could never live there.
You've got Miami all wrong. It is a great, great city if you know the where's and what's. Stay away from the fogies, hit the beach, hit South Beach, walk around, enjoy the sun, grab a cab ride with some Dominican or Cuban dude and have them take you to where they eat lunch or to Lil Havana. It is great. It is a South American/Carribean city in America. It is awesome. If you don't know a little Spanish/can't distinguish between Mexicans and Cubans, you would hate it.
Portland (don't know never been), Boston I like but it is a little too stereotypical. I would prefer Vermont if I was going down that path and take the slightly more rural but still within striking distance thing over the Westchester/Cambridge non-stop township cluster&@#%.
San Fran? Never been but I would probably dig.
-
San Fran? Never been but I would probably dig.
You would. *Great* town, absolutely nuts but a great town. It's not everywhere that you can see Batman walking his boyfriend who's decked out in a ball gag, BSDM mask, and pleather from head-to-toe ... on a leash and all fours ... and think, "Bah that's not nearly as weird as what I saw a half hour ago."
-
Kat Kid: As Chance will tell you when he moves, there, there are parts of Hawaii that are complete crap. I've talked to teachers on some of the non-tourist parts and their students live in dilapidated tent cities. Parent contact is nonexistent, because nobody has a phone. You have to walk down to tent city and find their correct column and row if you want to talk to parents. I don't doubt that most parts of Hawaii are beautiful, but it's not all paradise. There is some extreme poverty amongst the natives there.
I'd say Oregon would be the nicest state in the country geographically.
And waks, Austin is not full of Texans. Austin is full of cool people who happen to be unfortunate enough to be born in Kansas so they move to an oasis in the middle of the state and nobody mentions the surrounding 800 miles out of complete shame.

Seems like we're about on par. I probably wouldn't want to live in NYC either, at least not for much longer than college or grad school.

I don't know dude. UT is still in the middle of it, right?

I was also going to say Oregon, as it is one of the six states I know pretty well.
Seriously, think of that place. It's absurd how much they've got going for them
1)Oregon Coast - route 101
2)crater lake
3)Willamette Valley
4)Cascades
5)Columbia river/gourge - that highway that hugs it for the entire state
Hell even eastern Oregon isn't that bad. It sure beats east. washington.
In fact if Oregon was a person, I would kindly ask it to stop being so ridiculously gorgeous!

But they really should consider making illegal if said women haven't shaved their chests recently.

utah is great. i lived there for 3 years.

NYC is great but I don't know if I could live there just because of me needing space. I stepped out of the hotel door and immediately saw more than 1,000 people in both directions. It was weird. I loved it though and the subway wasn't scary at all like all midwestern hicks grow up thinking it is. Also, murder rates per capita in NYC are redic. low compared to what you would think. As far as Hawaii being full of poor folks I didn't notice any difference from anywhere else I've been. We stayed in Honolulu so I'm assuming this isn't the "tourist areas" that have been refered to. We were all over the city and you see the usual amount of homeless types but everyone was super friendly and relaxed. The campus was also pretty cool but you won't find anywhere that the houses look "new" given everything has to be shipped in. Everyone there said they wanted to live ont he mainland though given they were somewhat trapped having to fly anywhere else. You can drive around the whole island of Oahu in a short day. Oahu is the third largest island but has 80% of the population (numebrs off the top of my head so est.) so I'm guessing the other islands would allow much more space and fewer poor folks if that's what scares you off.
-
Ok, largest city in the US. I personally have never been there, but I know some people like cities, so that's great for them. New York is much more than 'the city' though. There are some beautiful parts; Niagra Falls, 1000 Islands, Adirondacks, Lake Placid, Catskills...lots of Universities through the entire state, fun small college towns...plentiful outdoor activites. Highly diverse state.

This thread is chock full of geotards. Hawaii is getting way too much love. Oahu is too overrun, the big island is too bland. Maui is very nice, but St. John (yeah it's part of a US territory, not a state, so what). I haven't been to Kauai, so I guess I can't pass full judgement, but still. Plus it's too isolated.
Colorado is nice, but for mountains I'd rather go to Idaho, Montana, or yes, Utah. Central Utah blows, but so does eastern Colorado.
From a geographical point of view, listing anything in Florida is an absolute joke. Yeah it has coastine, but you'll find better beaches elsewhere, and interior Florida is flatter than Kansas. Seriously.
I'm really partial to the northeast myself. Washington state has some nice varried terrain. I love the Olympic Peninsula and the Cascades.
-

Uhhh...that's the northwest ;)
Seriously, going to Washington this summer; Seattle/Olympic penin/up the coast a little ways. Chose it for the combination of city, plains, mountains, rain forest, ocean, woodlands, waterfalls, etc. All in a relatively small area. Just isn't enough time to do all that we want to do.
-

LOFL. What a kick in the balls. It sucks when you're all, "I'm going to set these suckas straight!" and intro with a putdown only to trip on your own feet and fall on your face. Much easier to walk it off if you weren't trying to be that guy imo. Walk it off, you'll rebound.

When I could have lived anywhere I picked... Colorado. I do like Utah a lot... not so much Salt Lake, but the rest of the state is a geological amusement park. I was just thinking St George might not be a bad place to live, if you can get past how weirdo they are. I guess the liquor laws would drive a person insane.
Other great states: NC, Arkansas, Arizona, and of course CA, OR and Washington.
-
Arkansas
WTF? Explain. I've never been but have always assumed it was Missouri-2 and everyone that lived there was on the documentary "Bangin' in Little Rock".
-
Vermont. Hands down.
Oregon and Washington area is very nice.
-
I like the Black Hills of South Dakota and also Yellowstone NP in Wyoming.
Of course the rest of these two states may leave a bit to be desired...

North Carolina is pretty nice. The Southeastern Coastal Plain is pretty boring from a topographic standpoint though, but it has some nice beaches. The Northeastern Coast of NC From the Virginia Line down to about Cape Lookout is nice, almost like a "southern" Maine feel without the rocky coast line.
Piedmont area is interesting, and then you get into the mountains of Western North Carolina which I haven't had enough time to explore as I'd like.
I travel a lot around the Southeastern Coastal Plain area and if you've lived in Kansas, you start jonesing for "big sky country" because if the land is going to be so flat, you might as well be able to see something besides stand upon stand of pine trees.
The Lumbee/Lumber river looks like it could be a good float trip, but down in that area you've got the Lumbee Indians, lots of rednecks and sections of whole counties that even law enforcement is afraid to go into . . . it's a little freaky man.

(That said something about how St. John is a much nicer tropical paradise than Hawaii... In my mind!)

Canada side of Niagra Falls.
Are we including Canada now? I mean it is practically the 51st state but some of the folks in the east part get a bit touchy when you say that to 'em.
But if we're including Canada I *HIGHLY* recommend Banff, Jasper and all points in between (to include Lake Louise & the Icefields Parkway). If you catch it during the right sort of weather, which is to say during one of the infrequent breaks in the rain / snow, the westermost 100-ish miles of the Skeena River Valley can be pretty amazing. And if you're out that far you might as well head north on the Cassiar Highway, quite spectacular and waaay better IMHO than the more traveled road north.
-
Is it much colder in Canada than here?
-
If we were able to count Canada I would add that Victoria BC is redic. nice. It's like Washington without the stink of being in the United States so you can still be friends with the locals when traveling overseas!
-
can you imagine how nice the u.s. would be if it wasn't filled with americans?
if we include canada, then also mexico. i split my vote between durango and michoacan.

I thought you meant you split your vote between Durango, Colorado (which admittedly seemed odd with your put down of Colorado earlier), and Michoacan, Mexico.
frack.
I'm going to stop posting in this thread now...
Southwest Colorado is the nicest part of that state though damnit.
-
Arkansas--well yeah it's a lot like Missouri, but the mountains are bigger. I like it mainly for the mountains and its proximity to Kansas--I used to be able to go down there for a weekend trip from Wichita, when the infinite flatness was driving me nuts.
The thing that pisses me off is that the country is getting a lot bigger as gas prices keep rising, unless they start coming out with some really practical high-efficiency cars. It's a lot harder for an average person to take a cross-country roadtrip now.

Pfft. That's a lame excuse. 40+ MPG, (http://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/bikes/bike.jsp?b=2008r1200gsa) enough space to carry all of your camping gear, and 4-season capable if you're not a pussy. Get going.
