Title: Question for you Scotch drinkers out there
Post by: Brock Landers on March 26, 2008, 01:27:33 PM: I think there was a thread a while back about Scotch but I didn't pay much attention to it since I usually don't touch the stuff. However I was recently presented with a bottle of Glenfiddich scotch and it was better than I thought it would be. It's single malt, aged 18 years (like a nice high school chick).

Where exactly would this rank in the echelons of Scotch? Is it considered pretty good stuff or merely a SLTH of scotch?? Thanks.

Post by: pissclams on March 26, 2008, 03:27:12 PM: awesome. very easy to drink scotch, a great one to "learn" on. don't expect the half gallon bottle of crawfords on your grandpa's bar to taste quite the same, or at all similar, for that matter. costs roughly $75 a bottle and should be drank either neat or with 1 or 2 ice cubes, no fruit to accompany. if you need to start the bottle with more ice then gradually decrease how much ice you add as you get used to the taste that may be a good idea, as the ice will water down the scotch. i have some friends that exclusively drink scotch and it's always straight up.

if you decide you like it and want a more affordable bottle with a very similar taste, try balvenie doublewood 12 yr, which will set you back $35-$40 per 1/5th.

Post by: cyclist on March 26, 2008, 05:53:16 PM: Glenfiddich is one of the best selling Single Malt Scotch Wiskies in the USA. The one you have is a step up from the best selling in quality, since the best selling is a 12 year old.

That said, I don't care for the normal Glenfiddich and haven't tried the 18 year old because of it. I find Glenlivet a very good Scotch even in the 12 year old version. I have also drank the 18 year old (called Nadurra) and the 21 year old version and these are excellant. The Glenlivet 12 year version is also a best seller in the USA.

That said, the peatier the better for me and I do like Laphroaig (10 and 30) and Lagavulin (16). Talisker 18 year old is good stuff as well.

I usually get a highball glass or a brandy snifter and pour a splash and just sip, and have a separate glass of water on the side.

Only alcoholics drink scotch, stick to beer...less obvious.

Only alcoholics drink scotch, stick to beer...less obvious.

Well maybe Cutty Sark, cuz if you drink good to very good single malts, you can't afford to be an alcoholic.

1 or 2 ice cubes??? I must be a FP because the first few glasses I had were in a rocks glass with like 4 ice cubes. Then again, this is a big step up from Natty Lite. I'll definitely have to savor this bottle because I have priced it at several liquor stores in the Topeka-Manhattan Metroplex and it's about $80-$85.

Also, what the hell is the deal with the Single malt vs. Double malt??? I have low SIQ.

Ok, basic Scotch knowledge. Most brands you see are blended Scotch Whisky. This would be your Chivas Regal, Dewars, Johnnie Walker, Cutty Sark :yuck: Etc. Single Malt Whisky is from a single distillery. Doublewood means the whisky has been aged for part of the process in one cask and then aged for the remaining part of the process in another cask. Most likely one cask had previously held bourbon, the other sherry, although it varies. This emparts a slightly different flavor to the finished malt.
