Title: People Downstairs (need advice)
Post by: Kat Kid on January 27, 2008, 01:48:05 PM
There are three people that live in one of the apartments downstairs.  I live right above them.  They suck ass.  They always play their music way too loud, but only occasionally is it a problem.  On a couple of occasions they have stayed up late (till like 3-4) on school nights when I had a test and my wife had work.  I go down, I ask them to turn it down.  And they turn it down to a respectable level.  A couple of times they've had keggers or stayed up late on weekends.  Bfd.  I let it go and they've never really let their after hours go past 4:30.

But last night, they went too far.  Before I continue, I want to say that I think they are meth addicts.  "Why?", you ask.  Because they stayed up all night listening to country, then thrash metal, then some sort of crapty dream theater kind of metal, then some hardcore, then some more thrash metal, then they wrapped up with Quentin Tarantino's movie about the car.  When I say all night, I mean it started at about 2:30 and went to 6:45.  I warned them once that night at about 3:20 and the volume went down, but jesus christ.

Am I a pussy for not calling the cops/threatening them with a gun?  Who else stays up during those hours with a need to listen to crapty music that loud?  They have to be Ice heads right?  Advice?  Grow a wiener?  Cops on speed dial?  Talk to them (scary, been there before)?  If my music's too loud, you're too old?

Help!

Send your wife down to threaten them with a rolling pin.

I would find a new place to live.  You only put your wife in further danger by living there longer.  Calling the cops will do nothing.  You could be sitting on a ticking timebomb if they are brewing on the oven.

Will the landlord be willing to intervene? Mine is a no nonsense kind of woman. I emailed here one night and she showed up the same night and threatened the apartment next to me. My neighbors had a party that must have been all dudes, because I heard about 15-20 dudes singing every Creed song until 2:30 am on a thursday.

I think that you've done your part, much more pussyish to call the cops without saying anything yourself.  I'd call the land lord.

i'd try the talk again, with the gun.  throwing wine bottles at them as they urinate in alley below your balcony works ok too.

1. Buy a gun
2. When annoyed shoot through the floor 3-4 times
3. Repeat as necessary

I can pretty much guarantee that you'll have no more worries about noise.  Or you could do what I used to do: crank the ol' Marshall stack up to 10 and play the Star Spangled Banner every morning around 4:30 until they get the message.

This sound exactly like the fine young man who used to live next door to my wife and I. Our annoying neighbor got kicked out by our landlord after having the cops called on him twice (we have a no parties/cops clause in our lease agreement where we live). Once was while we were out of town for the weekend because of their noise. The next time a few people in our building called the cops because the guy was fighting someone in his kitchen while all the other drunks were out in the hall smoking who knows what and being very loud. He also trash his place, breaking a his front door which has a high fire rating (so its pretty tough). He would party from about 11 pm to sometimes 6 am.

I'd report the guy to your landlord if talking to him hasn't and will no longer work. By the time I got worked up enough to approach our landlord about, the landlord informed me that he was on his way out...and threeweeks later he was gone.

There's always the "drill hole in your floor/their ceiling and build an outhouse" trick.

When it gets below freezing again, pour a bucket of water in front of their door so it makes sheet ice.

I few years back when I lived in Manhattan I lived for a while on Elaine across from the KSU Gardens.  Upstairs neighbors were these 3 GI hicks from Oklahoma and would stay up every night drinking and playing country real loud.  I tried being cool at first about it.  But every night of the week... nu-uh.

So everytime they had the singing/music going past 3am, I would crank up Wu-Tang's "Triumph" on repeat until they quit.  Shook the whole house.

Which just proves my point.  Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothin' ta frack with.

Step 1: Buy the album by Spacemen 3, "Playing With Fire"
Step 2: With your speakers face down to the floor repeat track "Suicide" at full volume before you leave for work/school.
Step 3: Profit.
