Where we went from down 13-12 to up 27-13 was the best pressure defense I think I've ever seen from a K-State team. And frankly, we were beating the crap out of CU during that stretch. But I do think we wore down which led to fouling and was highlighted by the trip where we got 5 or 6 shots and got nothing out of it. Then once Walker and Beasley got into foul trouble we had no offensive flow until the 2nd half when we started getting Beasley and Walker free on the low block. Overall though I thought we did a great job in the 1-3-1 trap and then the 3-2 though. For the most part we had great movement and energy outside of losing Roby a few times.
It was good to win a game where we didn't get good guard play (Young was by far the best) and didn't shoot the ball well from outside at all. You knew those games would come again, but I was hoping we wouldn't be 27% bad. It was good to see the guys realize they weren't falling (only 2 attempts in the 2nd half) and get the ball to Beasley/Walker. Stewart wasn't hitting shots and Pullen needs to realize that on a drive if he's truly one on one its a good take, but if there are bigs waiting in the lane to block his shot he's got to dish. He did that on 3 occasions, but overall besides his shooting he had a solid game, much better than Stew IMO. Stew did do alright isolated on Roby (though we did switch a lot) in man situations besides when CU would clear and Roby would drive which is not a good situation for Stew to be in. He did limit his outside shots after Roby's run in the first half. Young was solid again which is nice to see b/c we need him to be in the mix and playing well, especially next wednesday.
Overall its always good to get a win when you don't play well offensively on the road, especially a game where the opponent really muddies things up with some unconventional play. Good for out guys to fight through that and still win going away.

In response to this hbbiq post I'm going to throw out this nugget. Remember when we had somewhat of a break on (like 3 on 2) and Beasley passed to Gilbert and Gilbert just stopped where he was at the top of the key all awkwardly and waited for the rest of the gang to catch up along with all the Buffs. Anyone remember that? :ksu:

I'm always good when Gilbert doesn't turn it over. He makes me the most nervous on a break.

Gilbert on the break this year = Akeem Wright on the break last year :ohno:

I remember the break when Sutton should have gotten the pass back from Walker, but Walker instead decided to try and jump over somebody.

Yeah. Honestly, anyone else and I'm upset, but somehow I don't mind it when Walker is a bit selfish and tries to dunk over someone.

Primarily because there's a decent chance BW will teabag the poor fellow and make for a nice poster.

Yeah, that was an incredible stretch of defense. I thought most of the night our guys also did a pretty nice job of getting in the way of their cuts. A lot of times their guys would be up top, start their cut, and just run into our defender and have to stop.

We were absolutely destroying CU with that little half-court trapping zone. I was wondering if Martin called that off because he wanted to save it for a later opponent. Either way, Martin's defensive moves have been very nice this year. We are keeping people off balance. Martin will break a curve ball off head high and then put a fast ball right on the outside corner for the K. Me likey.
-
Martin coached circle 'round bzdelik yesterday, imo.
-
Walker is generally very unselfish on fast breaks. He's just a smart player (offensively).

pffft.
There's no coaching involved. Players get better just by practicing against other great players. All you really need is a ball and a gym.

He said the guys got tired. He wanted to use it more, but didn't trust it after that stretch.
I was even more puzzled that CU never adjusted. They just kept playing right into the defense by bring the ball across halfcourt right into a trap. Never tried to get anyone in the middle to attack it, or play 2 guards up front to balance the pressure. For such a great LTH, Bzeldik got schooled on that one.

All of the great LTH's look like Wooly's in sheep's clothing to me.

He has completely depantsed two of the solidest long term hires imo.

The part of the game Fan was talking about was the best stetch for us defensively. Offensively, any stretch where MB and Bill were in the game at the same time we generally looked good (aside from when Gilbert was doing his best to f it up - seriously Gil..when you have a 2 on 1 break away and MB is the other guy, throw the f'ing ball to him).

Excellent analysis/wordage

Beaz depantsed the cu student section last night. They were pwned and he wasn't really even trying.

b-eazy sub'd in and out of the game like an all-american wooden award winning nba lottery pick last night.

CU played right into that zone trap defense. Every possession in that stretch they would pass it to the left wing, knowing that we were going to trap. Low bbiq on the part of the pg, if you can call him that. When a team's trapping you follow your pass so the man that's about to be trapped can kick it right back out to beat the trap, I thought Bzeldik would recognize that but they kept doing it. Enjoyed that blitzkrieg.

Again Frank Martin preformed well for being an "AAU" coach and all.

Please. It's just the players. We'd be better served only having an equipment manager to get uniforms and spending the coaches's salary on recruiting.

you just wish you could pin one thing beasley has learned from martin but instead you continue to tap out. your controversial posts on the football board are much better than your x's and o's posts on the basketball board. just imo. *
*doesn't mean they're good, just better.

I don't know anything about basketball. I just :ksu: when we're winning and :curse: when we're losing. And sometimes I turn to chitwood and go  and he says :cyclist:

Beasley's play in multiple different zone defenses has also improved.
Do you watch KSU basketball?

I think Frank's done a good job at improving offensive spacing (of the entire team).
That's a quasi-skill imo.
Any real skills (like go-to moves, improved shooting, dramatically improved ball handling) would be difficult to develop during a D1 college season. Frank may have improved Mike on some of these skills in the off season, but we would have likely seen the results beginning with Sac. St. JMO
-
If Beasley were to have met Frank Martin for the first time yesterday 30 minutes before tip, would he have had the same game?
PC will not answer that question honestly, and will instead resort to the broadest reach of his wit - :flush:
-
What Coach Martin can do with Beasley during the season is find ways to maximize his talent in novel ways.
Something like, getting him 10 more offensive posessions when in early foul trouble, as a random example.

Quality post.
It's the coaches job to capitalize on our players skills and find mismatches (particularly enjoyed when walker had the white guy on him in the post and beaz making the entry pass) Also, coaches need to give certain players a little bit of freedom to create, imho.
There's not enough time for coaches to focus on players individual skills during the season, Frank is more concerned with putting in new sets on offense and defense, scouting, radio show etc.
