Title: pretty sweet set up.
Post by: dr00d on December 02, 2007, 10:35:40 PM
So I was at a LAN party this weekend. Say what you want, but they are pretty fun for me.

There was about 50 persons (about 75 persons showed up) hooked up via Network for games like call of duty 4, c/c3, warcraft3, TF2, etc.  There is a seperate room for Xbox and 360, seperate room for wii(s), seperate room for ps3's, and a seperate room just for rock band.  These are all projected on the wall on sheets attached by push pins.

The cool thing that someone brought in was a computer with mame and this bad boy hooked up...(http://www.xgaming.com/img/tankstick_web/web/tankstick.jpg)

The person already had about any game prior to 2003 on mame and it was damn entertaining watching/playing mortal kombat again.  LOL

TF2?

I've played Warcraft 3 but I cheated to make my army invincible. I sucked at that game. Wasn't fast enough to manage my moving armies and my town and was ripped apart by anything remotely difficult. I liked the storyline though.

I've never been to nor seen a lan party but despite the extreme nerd factor it could be fun. I suppose in the end its not a whole lot different than when my friends come over to play N64 Smash Brothers(which is inferior to the gamecube one imho).

TF2=Team fortress 2. Part of the Orange Box Set.

We had LAN parties in the dorms for Halo and CS.

My friends and I always had lan parties for the original xbox (mainly just halo). Very fun stuff.

Halo is fun but we ended up just all putting Warthogs into the Blood Gulch place and ramming eachother. If you fell out of your vehicle then you could be run over and whoever you runs you over earns a point.

Good times.

I think I've heard of these LAN parties.  But I think they were called "virgin parties" instead.

what does LAN mean?

Local Area Network...that's what they were called before the console revolution (when you had a hundred pc's connected together for starcraft).  Since then, everyone pretty much uses the term loosely and calls everything a LAN party if it involves games networked together to play against one another.

I'm sure some of them haven't seen pussy since their mom, but there are some pretty cool dudes that play games as well, you know.

an example of above: the dudes playing magic in while watching the big12 championship game over slingbox.  LOL

It's a good time though, you pay 15 and you get all the pop/candy/pizza you can handle and access to any console/game combo you ever wanted to play on, with of course your computer there for when you are done to slaughter people in real first person shooter games ;) :hookem:

I've never been to an actual LAN party (like, a real one you know) but do you have to bring your own PC? Monitor?

aye, you bring everything you normally play on and use (and an extra removable drive or easy swapping).

The only thing you don't need to bring is an Ethernet cord (it should be already set up for you to sit down and plug in, if it's an organized party)

most places also have a share for you to either dump files or take files, depending on what you need to run the game :)

This LAN party is something that my company puts on about once every 2 months.  It's a pretty cool deal since we get to use one of the buildings and do whatever we want (minus drinking-liability the company doesn't want).

It's slowly building up the numbers of the year and a half I have been going.  They also started doing a loyalty thing so if you had gone to the previous LAN parties during the year, you were in a basket that they draw for prizes at the end of the year.

The top 4 prizes this year were:

1)gamer rocking chair thing with speaker/hookups

2)the logictech gamer (L15?) keyboard

3) wii

4) 360

I had the option to take another prize, halo 3 game, but I opted to pass so I was still available for the big prizes...it didn't work out and I didn't win crap...that's the breaks I guess.

I did LAN parties a couple times in High School. They are a good time.  I don't think they make you socially retarded unless you are turning down dates to go our you are doing them way too often.  Its a good break from giving a crap about damn near anythign and just shooting some peeps in a game.

Mine were more like a group of people in a room with a bunch of computers saying the most obscene things imaginable to eachother.  They were good til  :beerchug: and  :bong: were discovered.
