Title: Question re: RP and the D
Post by: tmramrod91 on November 02, 2007, 11:01:29 AM
Obviously RP comes from an offensive background. The offense has show massive improvement in just one year of him being the coach. He says he stresses defense and understands that is the key to winning championships.
Question is, why is the offense so far ahead of the D at this point in his career? Is it personell or RP not being a defensive guy?

The fact that Snyder seemingly recruited one high school d-linemen in his last four seasons, really, really, hurts.

Also the system change.

Our Dline recruitment was a disaster from 02 through today.

Our Dline recruitment was a disaster from 02 through today.

Jackson and Manu were nice (probably the best DL recruits since 02).

Abana may still contribute.

The rest it's too early to call a disaster.

I've posted this before, but our suckage on defense is linked to this:

DL/DT (suckage)recruits:
02:
K. Huntley -   :blank:
J. Berry -  :)
A. Bulman -
Q. Echols -  :)

03:
M. Latimore -
A. Moran -  :blank:
M. Wooldridge -   (double lol's cause he sucked at OL and DL)

04:
V. Faustin -  :blank:
T. George -  :blank: (thanks for the facemask @ NU in '05 to lose the game)
J. Bedore - moved to OL
I. Campbell -  (but 3-4 is taking away his rush, imo)

05:
R. Miller -   (never made it)
B. Rees -  (never made it)
S. Burch -  :blank:
W. Williams -  (never made it)

06:
R. Jackson -  (see Ian)
M. Manu -  :)
B. Balkom -  :blank:
G. Crews -  :blank:
Z. Kendall - (moved to OL )
T. Viers - (moved to OL)

07:
R. Guidry -  :blank:
P. Kirk -  :blank: (future  )
M. Abana -  :blank:
X. Stewart -  :blank:

Combo that with having adequate/average LB's.  BTW the  :blank: face means I'm nuetral on them.

Huntley had his moments and so did George - but Snyder looked like a grandpa spoiling his grandkids... just letting them do whatever they wanted seemingly.  :curse:  :yuck:   :banghead: :nono: :chainsaw:

Imagine if Prince came in and changed from the multiple formation QB run game, power run game, and vertical passing game to the Colts-based WCO and then his OC left for the NFL.  Then decided to install a spread option, multiple passing attack.  We'd probably be having similar issues on defense.

I don't think we can discount the change from Snyder/Elliot's 4-3 with multiple coverages to a Tampa 2 4-3 to a 3-4 with multiple coverages.  Really dramatic changes, especially for the front 7.

I really really hope that the issues with the D stem from 1)terrible recruiting in the last few yrs of snyder and 2)significant changes in defensive schemes.
Those can both be corrected in time

And what exactly was wrong with the 4-3?  I kind of feel like Nebraska fans being told that running the ball is out of style and people CAN'T do it anymore.   I'm sick of being sold on Tampa 2 and 3-4.
