So, I was out of town for five days because my grandma died.
The first day back, my wife (who stays at home with our daughters) saw a guy just sitting on our front steps looking around. She was scared to let him know she was there, for some reason.
The next day, she walks out of the house, and a pickup parked down the street starts up, and speeds by, and the guy driving was trying to hide his face with his hand...she was pretty sure it was the guy from the day before.
So, last night we get a knock on the door...there's this lady that says she needs to borrow a phone or a Nextel charger. I was like, um, OK. Didn't let her in the house, but let her use my cell phone. What the hell, it was kind of cold and maybe her car broke down or something. She calls says "Hey, I'm by my house," hangs up and leaves. We'd never seen her in the neighborhood before, so I was like, WTF? I try to see where she goes, but she left pretty quick.
When I was looking for this girl outside, I see a car drive by and park on the street behind my house (I live on a corner). No one gets out, and the car stays running.
Right after that, this big guy that always has the crack* (*lame attempt at board "cred") is walking down the middle of our street. This isn't that weird for my neighborhood (people from outside the neighborhood never use sidewalks for some retarded reason), but he sat on the stairs two houses behind my house facing my back door. I go to my backyard, turn on our floodlight and stare at him for a while.
After a couple minutes, he walks over to the car, talks for a while, then gets in, and they drive off. That isn't too odd in my neighborhood, lots of crackheads not too far away, but the timing had me suspicious.
So I grab the dog and walk around to see if I can find that girl or see the car cruising the neighborhood or something. Didn't see anything until I got back to my house, and saw the car I saw earlier drive by again. (It's a Honda Accord with blue flames and a giant VTECH sticker on the window, lol @ using that to sell drugs or rob someone). It didn't stop, but it apparently was going around the block because I saw it again in less than a minute. It parked behind my house again, sat for a minute then drove off without letting anyone out.
So, I'm walking around my house, WTF'ing, and decide to see if the lady at my door really made a call. She did, so I called the number. I figured he wouldn't answer and I could get his name off voicemail, but he answered. I was like, "Who's this?", and he was like, "Who's this?", and I asked him who called him, and he was like, "no one, I forget, someone had a wrong number".
So, will they rob me if I leave town again to see my recently widowed grandfather?
Am I missing something obvious? Just being paranoid?
TIA

First thing's first- sorry about your grandmother.
Secondly, it obviously sounds pretty fishy but in your neighborhood there's a lot of weird crap (not trying to be rude).
Third, never let anyone use your cell phone. I can tell you why in another thread, but take my advice and politely say no.
Fourthly, I'd call that dude's number that the girl called from an anonymous phone (maybe a phone from work?), when he answers pretend you're Lt. Peterson from KCMO PD, tell him you're watching him and tell him he doesn't want to go back to jail (most criminals are not first time offenders, it will give you cred if he thinks you know about his past), then hang up.
Fifthly, tell your damn wife that if someone is on your property when you're not home to call the damn cops next time.
I'm serious about Fourthly, balls up and do it, better than getting jacked.
-
firstly, thanks
secondly, yeah, but I've never really seen anything this elaborate, at least on my block. I'm pretty aware of unfamiliar cars and faces and people that look like they don't belong.
thirdly, yeah, dumb move.
fourthly, good idea.
fifthly, I told her the same thing.
-
Do you own any guns?
And if so, does your wife know how to use them or atleast knows how to hold them? I'm not saying you should go all "Man on Fire," but the sound of a Remington 870 chambering a shell in a non-sporting situation tends to put the fear of God in people.
-
Call the cops and tell them what has been happening and give them details about the people and car. Don't screw around with this bunch, it could be worse that getting things stolen, your wife could be in danger. Or the both of you for that matter. It definitely sounds like someone in your direct vicinity is going to have problems of some sort with these people. Look, they sent a chick (less threatening) up to your damn door, so you are probably the target. Now they know that cutting your land based phone line won't work for them as you have a cell. Move on this dude, right frakin now IMO.

I mean, everything about this is stupid. My house sits high on a corner lot with retaining all around, all the windows that you can reach without a ladder have bars on them, my back door faces front porches across the street, and my backdoor neighbors' front porch is right there, and all the entrances are lit. I have some random dude's phone number. They're driving a goddam car with flames on it, and the most expensive item in my house is a f*cking vacuum cleaner.
Also, here is discussion on my new OT board that gets traffic.

Yeah, I forgot to mention I called the cops after all this happened. Gave the details and stuff, and they said to call if we saw them.

Though it doesn't sound like the place they'd pick to attempt a robbery, there are some unbelievably bold thieves out there. And, this is again assuming robbery is the intent. Could be anything, if they are high who the hell knows what they may have running around in their minds. Just saying, they are up to something and I doubt its good. Scary stuff with a wife and little one.
-

Either of these would have been a more appropriate adjective:
- stupid
- desperate

The Maryland people may have more experience with this.

Are there any Division 1 college teams that are in or around the ghetto?
Some one told me Duke was in the ghetto. Then again, he was from Carey, NC.

Univ. of Cincinnati?
-
Durham is kind of sh*tty, but didn't seem like a "ghetto". UMKC is actually pretty close to my house (and the ghetto), but similar to my house, it's really close to the Plaza, too.
USC is an obvious one. My in-laws say the area around Houston (university) is sh*tty, but they live in an equivalent of Cary.
I think College Park is actually pretty suburban and nice, but Baltimore looks rough on "The Wire".
-
If the girl comes back I'd start acting crazy and sh*t. Like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon. Start going off about them robbing you. Invite them in to see that you have nothing worth robbing. Have them read this board to see how cheap you are. Etc, etc, etc. Problem solved.

Oh hell no, I'm a hater actually.
Koug - this being a team effort on their part as well as "in your face" activity fits bold and stupid, not desperate.
-
Ya one thing you have to remember about criminals is that there is a reason why they're criminals (because they're dumber than crape).

I don't know, kougs. I've asked about that before, but I don't think it's as bad as snart (idiot) leads you to believe.

USC sounds like a good bet. They probably have good traffic on some of their boards, worth a try.

Not that anyone other than K24 cares, but I did research, dammit.
I was curious. Clifton ranks #14 of 53 Cincinnati neighborhoods in police calls made in 2006 with 7,195. Over The Rhine ranks #1 with 21,975. And the affluent Hyde Park ranks #26 with 4,105.

Find some UCF fans to ask about it -- the area around Central Florida is pretty crapty

Ha, good idea. If I see him again, I'll act like he has a rad car that I want to take a picture of. (after calling the cops, of course)
-
Just thinking out loud here but you might consider that the flashy car is a way to distract you from paying closer attention to the faces of the people. Then when they return in a different car you'll not notice them. Anyway, be safe and I'd seriously consider getting your Mrs. a gun (from a pawn shop if money is tight)(shotgun for a wider pattern and less talent necessary maybe) and take her to the range so she is comfortable with it.
-
first things..sorry as well.
second..a similar thing happened to my parents house. their neighbors got robbed....2 houses adjacent... a week before this happened. they live out in the sticks, so its remote and no one would know if they killed her (mom) and threw her in the woods. (well, we'd know, but you know what i mean)
a week after all of the neighbors were hit, two men came up the gravel drive and my mom was the only one home. two dirty, trashy men...(probably had beards) ask my mom all sorts of questions....
do you own dogs, can we use the phone, how many acres...etc...
sounds to me like they are scoping the area. watching your daily routines to see when the best time is to take your things. these men did this for a month...they were caught and arrested....and thank god they didnt bash my moms teeth in with the butt of a pistola.
i'd be cautious..for real. chances are they are watching you more than you think.

forgot to mention, sorry for your loss Rusty.
And I agree with what CN said, they are likely still out there but aware that you are aware.

1. Take a picture of a bunch of rich guy stuff that you don't own for insurance purposes.
2. Don't get your wife a gun unless you like being dead.
3. Get alarm system signs (not an alarm system. alarm systems are dumb but the sign will keep people away).

So, my wife went to talk to all our neighbors, and this same girl has visited our backdoor neighbors twice, and our neighbors next door once. They're all aware about what's going on and have called the police. Our neighbors across the street actually called the cops when the guy was sitting on our front step last week. I hope she comes back, so I can take her picture...
The house two doors down, where the car was parked, was a drug house before the guy got evicted recently...that might have been why the cars kept circling...wondering why no one was home.
Either way, it's good to know all our neighbors are on board.
-
Did you do a reverse look-up on the number in your cell phone?
-
That's probably the best thing for you Rusty, is to know your neighbors and who they are and what they know.
I think you'll be fine, but make sure you tell your neighbors you're leaving so they can keep a watch.
-
Did you do a reverse look-up on the number in your cell phone?
Yeah, it's a cell phone, didn't want to pay $14.95 to take it any further. I think I'll give it to the police and let them handle it.
-
Good to hear that neighbors are also aware and involved with the going-ons. I'd bet you are correct about the activity having to do with the dealer moving, but hard to know for sure. So whats up with the gal going door to door though, that is still troubling to explain?
-
Fuk you, Rusty. No one cares about your personal sh1t.

No, it's pretty simple. She's trying to get inside and see what kind of loot each house has, so they know if it's worth it to break in.
It could be unrelated to the traffic two doors down, but it's obvious what she's trying to do.
