Title: Factions
Post by: Dan Rydell on June 05, 2006, 01:13:11 PM
Cripes.  There are more factions around the K-State message boards right now than there are in most war-torn third-world countries.

The Sunshine Pumpers.  Think Prince is the second savior of KSU football and love his recruiting style.  These break down into two further sub factions:  those who wouldn't have cared if Snyder stuck around another 5 years and ran the program totally into the ground, because there would be no program without him, and those who love Snyder and what he did for KSU, but are glad he passed the baton because it appears things were slipping.
Catchphrases:  "Stars are meaningless.  Josh Freeman!  Text messaging!  Go cheer for the Huskers if you don't like Prince!  Speed kills!"

The Doomsayers.  Totally unimpressed with what Prince has done so far.  Hate the 2-star recruits.  Concerned with the inexperience.  Think we're probably headed for 3-4 more lousy years and then a complete rebuild by whoever is (un)fortunate enough to pick up the pieces that Prince leaves behind.  As with the first faction, this group breaks down into two further sub factions:  those who wish Snyder would have stayed on, b/c with all the players returning and a couple of new assistant coaches, we could have probably challenged for the North title this year, and those who are glad Snyder left when he did, but wish we hadn't gotten worked by Patterson and Leavitt, and some still have fantasies involving BV.
Catchphrases:  "Two stars?   :jerkoff:  We're doomed."

The Wait-n-See Crowd.  Likely to wait until the final recruiting rankings are released/Prince coaches a few actual games before they panic or celebrate.  As with the other two factions, two different feelings regarding Snyder.
Catchphrases:  "Uh, has Prince coached a game yet?"  (Note: can have positive or negative connotations, depending on the speaker.)

ku/NU fans.  Just enjoying the ride.  Seem to be pro-Prince, for the most part...go figure.
Catchphrases:

Idiots.  Seem to have overrun the sites recently, mostly KSF.com and GP.com.  Often difficult to determine affiliation, due to misspellings and utter inability to produce a coherent thought.
Catchphrases:  " hey you suck all Price no recrute donkey i HATE ku!!!!!! gayhawk mildkitty haha!   :chainsaw: "

Honestly, I'm having trouble figuring out who all is in each camp, especially because posters seem to change camps daily...and then there's the sarcasm element, which complicates further.

If you've been a KSU fan for very long, then the fat lady can't sing until at least the 2nd or 3rd season.

To start wailing about every little thing now ... in JUNE, is just absurd.

If it turns out Prince sucks, I'll say it.  But I am not going to say it now ... in June, 3 months before he even coaches his first game at KSU, and 8 months until signing day.

Sarcasm aside, I'm in that 3rd catagory...   I'll wait and see.

Really, I'm in the wait and see crowd.  However, based on the last couple of months, I'm leaning towards the doomsayers....I haven't seen anything other than the Freeman commit to give me hope of any success, but I have seen plenty of things that would make me worry, starting with the joke of a coaching staff, and leading up to filling 2007 scholarships with marginable recruits..  It's not "fair", but this is a goddam message board.  We can either base our opinions on what we've seen so far, or shut down the board and/or refrain from commenting on Prince until late November.

Joke of a coaching staff??

Seriously??  If you think about it, on paper, some of Snyder's early coaching staffs were a joke.   Jim Leavitt was a position coach at Iowa, Bobby Stoops was a grad assistant at Iowa.  Mark Mangino ... Penn Turnpike.

Another group:

Bearcat Fans.  Only like basketball.  Don't seem to give a damn about football.  There are two kinds.  Those that still root for UC and those that no longer do.  Neither care about football.

Catchphrases:  "Bob Huggins this," and "Bob Huggins that."

The facilities in 1989 also worked just fine for Bill for a while.  Why try to shoot for anything better in 2006?

We have four assistants that have worked with a BCS program - a holdover, a guy that got fired, and James Franklin (whom I consider a solid hire).  Del Miller had more D1 experience than Ron Prince.  I'm not sure where Bob Cope came from, but I'm guessing he wasn't an assistant position coach.  Watching the DC hiring process this year was like watching 2007 recruiting.  When you throw in the state of the program in 1989 vs. the state of the program now, we should be able to attract a more qualified staff.

bslimz..

You gave me an idea.

I think it's time I made groups that matched that and assigned people to it so it apepars in their titles next to their handle.   That way, we can know which group they are in and people can make better responses.

We should have a committee and vote on which person should appear in what group.  The member cannot put himself in a group or lobby for their group.  We'll decide criteria later.

How's all that sound?

Michigan wanted Raheem Morris badly to be their secondary coach.  I don't have a problem with Matt Walterstedt because he's been a coordinator at the D1 level and he's a K-Stater.  Mo Latimore is a very solid line coach.

I also like Tibesar because we got one of the best young DII coordinators out there to come in and be the special teams coach.

I have a feeling that some folks would deliberately try to get the IDIOT tag and then wear it as a badge of honor, though.

Why have a committee?  Just assign them all yourself.  Dictatorships are the most efficient form of government.

I agree, Raheem would make a GREAT DB coach.  I guess Wallerstedt is an upgrade over Cosh.  Latimore is good.  Not sure on Tibesar.

The thing is the Tampa 2 doesn't place as MUCH emphasis on going out there and out game planning the other guy ... as it does playing together as unit while taking care of your responsibility, getting to the football and hitting people.

***New Group Nomination***
Bramlage Junkies:  Traditional K-Staters that would trade suckiness in football for a Men's Basketball National Title.  They relish the thunder and lightening that was once, and will soon again be, an essential part of Kansas State University.  Believe that we were so good, we just had to take 15 years off to let the rest of the country catch up.

I'd take Bob Stoops if we had to give up Huggy in a heart-beat.

screw that.  just b/c its stoops.  id take a guy as successful as stoops in a heartbeat over huggins but in no way shape or form would i ever be happy if stoops was our coach, even if it meant national titles for 3 years in a row b/c they would all be tainted by him being the coach.

He was huge in our turnaround. I can't hate him. Part of him is Wildcat.

not me, only because i believe basketball has a much greater chance for a nc than football considering the current landscape of college sports.

p.s. i'm definitely a wait and see guy who is thinking we won't have a callahan-esq first season or a north winning season either.

I don't think I fit in any of those factions...if anyone is voting.

I'm closest to "Wait-n-See" but I don't think I've had to wait to see the changes.  I believe those changes are good.  There is some stuff I question, but I always do that.  I just can't be as nearly sacastic as I want to be though, because the results are unknown.

I'd trade suckiness in either sport for a NC in the other.  Does anyone think we're going to pull a UofF?

If so, you're in the Idiot's club.
