Title: Big 12 Stadiums
Post by: Beer on October 12, 2007, 12:42:59 PM
Where does BSFS rank, IYO, when compared with the others in the Conference?  I'm taking about in terms of: amenities, aesthetics, construction quality, overall "big-time" feel, etc...

It seems to me that our stadium kind of blows.  If I were Bill, I would not want my name on that mish-mash POS.  I mean, people on the upper levels can't even go to the bathroom!

My Rankings:

NU - The GOLD standard of college football.

TAM - The 12th Man.  'Nuf said.

OU - Good Gawd this thing is beautiful.

UT - New video board alone gets this structure in the top 4.

CU - Rocky Mountain high.  Classic appearance.

MU - Classic appearance.  Nice highway scene.

ku - If not for the track, I would rank Memorial above this.

TT - Not good, but better than ours.

OSU - Currently blows.  An afterthough.  Will soon shoot into the top 3 after renovations.

KSU - Poored quick-crete in a hole.  Mix and match structures.  Tiny press box.  New, but laughable A/V equipment.  No amenities for the common fan.  Overall structure looks like something I designed with popsicle sticks in 3rd grade.

ISU - Only slightly better than the Olathe facility KSU held an open practice at.

BU - Baptists are very modest people, and this stadium demonstrates that.  Nothing to see here.

Don't know what you're talking about.  I'm KSU through and through.  The thing is, I'm also a realist.  Imagine that!

The fact you have ku ranked above ksu is truly ridiculous. that place is a P.O.S. in every sense of the word. Its about to fall apart, bathrooms are disgusting, there is no where to park, no where to tailgate, they have a freakin track around it (as mentioned above). I rank it slightly above ISU.

But it doesn't smell like cow dung, and there is a nice view of campus up on the hill.  Hey, I'm a KSU fan, but I'm just sayin'.  Without the track, that place is absolutely amazing.

Yes.  I usually end up going to at least one a year there and 6 or so in Manhattan.

Sure, there is no parking, but the "in the slums yards" parking has a sort of charm to it.  Plus, it lends itself nicely to unenforcable underage drinking, which is awesome.

It just seems to me that KSU really screwed up by moving the athletic facilities so far from campus.  It takes away from the college atmosphere.  We could have done rehabs on Ahearn and old Memorial.

Expanding Memorial Stadium-Impossible unless you only wanted to seat no more than about 25,000.   The water table underneath Memorial Stadium is too high, and it sits on the downhill end of lots of run off.   That's why when they built Ahearn, they moved a ton of earth to build up the ground above the water table (this is why the City of Manhattan can get its water from wells, and not have to resort to drinking somebody elses runoff like say in Lawrence).

I've actually had the good fortune to attend a game at EVERY Big XII stadium, except for Texas A&M, that is coming later this month ...

Here's how I'd rank them:

Texas - huge, impressive ... great tailgating atmosphere around it, close to Interstate

Nebraska - the pressbox is like twenty stories high! Only place I've been where I felt claustrophobic outside ... there was like a human traffic jam trying to get out!

Oklahoma - the red brick of the structure and the surrounding the buildings is very picturesque

Colorado - GREAT setting, with the mountains as a backdrop, they have this weird indoor track/fieldhouse thing right next door.

Missouri - Big, good setting, lots of tailgating areas around. Decent ...

Kansas - The current renovations have been great ... needs another tier on the bowl side at some point. The concession section near the students still looks like a dump. Tailgating in spread out, no central location ...

Texas Tech - I was surprised by how small this place was ... they have weird false fronts on it, you can't tell it's a stadium from one side ... nice walkway outside with SWC history though

Kansas State - negative points for having the open end on the north side, so all the cold air blows in ... didn't you all do well enough with Snyder there to finally close it up? Lots of good places to tailgate between the football and basketball stadiums.

Oklahoma State - my memories are from the mid-nineties, I know Boone Pickens has given a lot of money for some big changes there ...

Baylor - not very memorable, their student body storms the field before the game instead of after ... strange!

Iowa State - awful, Jack Trice is open at both ends, I've been told by my Cyclone friends this is do it doesn't blow over

Texas A&M - incomplete until October 2007

NU, aTm, OU, UT - THOSE PLACES ARE INCREDIBLE... I cant figure out which is better.

KSU - LOVE IT, equal to the loudness I have heard in top tier big 12 venues (When we blocked that punt against OU in 2000 and ran it in for a TD - I couldnt hear myself think)  I would like to see the north end closed off, and i plan on doing that when I win the lottery.

MU - Not bad, but a little flat for my liking, I feel like i was in an open pizza box. Very clean pizza box though.

TT - never been- in a dry county... that CANT be good as you are sober AND in Lubbock, TX - I wouldn't be able to handle it.

CU - Never been - but Rocky Mtns? - meh, you can see the Rocky Mts from the projects in Denver - IOW... THIER EVERYWHERE!  not enough reason to rank them higher. Students suck there.

OSU - never been, from TV, it looks a little awkward with that HUGE brick wall on one end of the stadium

ku - I walked down the grass hill on the way to the game and stepped in Dog $hit - that sucked... and if the stadium is too old and crusty to do anything to - here is an idea... BUILD A NEW STADIUM!!!

ISU - Never been, but someone said that it was negative because it was open on both sides - Arrowhead is open on both sides, and I think that everyone on this board loves that place.

BU - Any place where Branch Dividians once called home - I will not make much of an effort to watch FB.

That brick wall is going to be covered w/ a huge HD display for next season. That might make that wall look even more strange.

i think that's gallagher-iba.  no i'm pretty sure that is.  they have it set up kinda like our old football stadium and ahearn.

I believe that the football and basketball stadiums have an adjoining wall and/or suites.

I seem to remember a story where there's a set of two sided suites where you could look down onto both the field and the court at the same time.

So here's a strange serious question:

Missouri, Okie State, Iowa St and Oklahoma all have wresting as a Div I sport ... I can't see it flying at Kansas ... but has there or will there ever be and attempt at K-State?

(I think the Gallagher in Gallagher-Iba was was wrasslin' coach ...)

We currently compete in men's wrestling, but at the NCWA -- National Collegiate Wrestling Assoc. instead of the larger NCAA level.  They compete against programs like Ft Hays State, NW Mo State, etc...

When I was in school the 'Cats did compete at the NCAA and Big 8 level.

You are right, Ed Gallagher was their wrestling coach WAAAAY back in the 1920s [before Gallagher Hall, now G-I Arena] was built and he was instrumental in making and keeping the USA a power in Olympic wrestling, not just oSu's program.

There's no doubt, kansas has the talent for a div. 1 wrestling program.  i think the problem is the funding and Title IX.  Kstate's team is pretty damn good.  They had the best wrestler in the nation.

That would be some pimp action for the dual suites - in a word, those suites would be... (I am going to say it) sweet. that was horrible. Rastlin? Nope, only on TNT - it doesnt fit the mold at KSU. They were looking for a new womens sport and instead of sucking at something for a while i.e. softball or soccer - we took Equestrian so we could compete immediately. Another men's sport - I hope so, but not likely IMHO.

Actually both wrestling and softball would do really well at K-State. Kansas has great talent in both sports (especially wrestling). I expect that those two will probably be the next sports added if we ever do add something. Unless we did something like mens rowing or tennis since we already have the facilities.

Isn't OSU's stadium go East-West?  That alone should put it last on the list.

I've never heard anyone complain about the Atmosphere at Memorial.  It's a pretty nice setting.

yes Okie State's stadium goes East-West ... just odd!

I understand Title IX had a good intent, but that stinks that it's prevented wrestling at K-State.

It killed baseball at Iowa State and men's swimming at Kansas.

I also thought it was weird when K-State adopted equestrian instead of soccer, also no softball?

I'm not sure I follow the logic of that, I mean ... I know appealing to a certain kind of student, but wouldn't women's soccer or softball mean more exposure for the programs and school in general?

Lots of money in horses.   When you're trying to build a $25 million dollar Equine Center . . . you have an Equestrian team.

IDK, kstate could adopt wrestling AND softball, i guess the money's just not there.  but honestly, how much could it be?

Somebody in the Athletic Department must be talking up the new basketball practice facility and additional football renovations, because they mentioned it on the ESPN broadcast last night.   $35 million dollars.

If there  is 95 million dollars out there from this Changing lives campaign why can't we upgrade both? After all those two sports fund all the other non revenue sports anyway. And the Horsey barn can be built on Vet Meds dime as far as I'm concerned after all a large fortion of it is supposed to be devoted to equine science anyway.
