Title: So I'm thinking of getting a dog.....
Post by: pufizzle on October 09, 2007, 11:25:50 PM
Any recommendations?  I don't need a hunting dog or anything like that.  Anyone have any good experiences?  Bad experiences?   :ohno:

i got my first dog 4 months ago.

she is a lab whippet mix. seen here:

i got her without telling my wife.  :ohno:
but now the two are inseparable.
we cant imagine our lives without her.

lab or shepard mixes are good starters. smart...and not little turds that piss everytime you see them.

(her name is Hambone...BTW)

kidding.

do you want recommendations on what breed to get?  or do you just want recommendations on whether you should get a dog or not?

did i really have to type the whole thing out?

Yes, because I thought you were talking about dog workout centers.  :shy:

Both would be nice.  I know they are a TON of work.  And I work 45 hours a week and live by myself.  So it wouldn't get any attention during the day.

Kings, how big is your lab/whippet going to get?
Title: Re: So I'm thinking of getting a dog.....
Post by: ECN on October 09, 2007, 11:44:36 PM
she's full grown, typically no more than 45 pounds. on a scale (measured in drink sizes at quick trip, she is a 32 oz. not the 22oz or the 44oz.) very quiet..only barks when people come up to the house.
my next one will be a shepard mix.

she doesnt get attention during the day either....but damn, when you get home...get ready.

get one.  dogs are awesome.  you should probably quit your job though, unless you can take your dog to work, or would like to spend every hour of the day you aren't working with your dog.  i wouldn't say dogs are tons of work, but they need to be with other living organisms.

if you want a lazy dog that will be relatively happy without much attention, get a greyhound.  if you want a smart dog that will do whatever you want it to, but will drive you insane if you don't give it a ton of attention, get a border collie.

Beagle, you can't go wrong.  Get a miniature though (9 inch) if you can find a breeder that breeds miniatures.  Beagles like to eat, sleep, and play and they're great with kids if you have any or hope to have.

Note:  They're not labs or retrievers... they're led by their noses so forget about being able to take them off their leash because the nose is king no matter how loud you whistle or yell.  It can get a little frustrating at times but they're great dogs!  Good luck.

Get one from the pound.  Lots of good dogs that they'll just kill if you don't take them (for free).  Go there and look - there's a lot of pure bred dogs that people can't handle in addition to the mutts that will do nothing but love you to death.

My wife's dog is kind of annoying.  I'm just not a big fan.

No, it just requires a lot of attention that I don't want to give.

We give it enough attention, it's just a chore more than anything.

We have had a beagle for 4 or 5 years and just got a chocolate lab pup.  The Beagle is a very docile dog and great with the kids.  The training of the lab is still in the works, but she's doing a good job.  I'd recommend either breed.

My dog kicks @ss.  Seen to the side. He is a mutt saved from certain leathal injection. Had him 7 years. He's home alone all day, but seems to be cool with it. Ones you rescue, they just know, and will love you forever.

He loves to chew on the "bad bird"

ya. cats rock for the single guy who's rarely home and doesn't have a lot of desire or time to spend making an animal with a brain the size of a small potato happy.   :D

dogs are ok but just require more time than most people realize or are willing to give.  then the dog gets pissed b/c he's lonely and bored and under worked and he starts chewing things up or spazzing out by chasing cars/kids/anything that moves and the owners wonder why.  then the owners start hating their dogs and bitching about them all the time until one day, a few weeks after Rover's 2nd birthday, the owner brings Rover to a new place called the pound where they have cool cages, and weird injectable drugs and stuff.

We want a dog but we both live 20+ min away from our house and raising and training a new pup would not be convenient for us, plus we don't have a nice backyard for the dog to play in.  Finally, she wants a dachshund and we have alot of stairs and those aren't good for the little weiner-dogs back.

So, we have 2 cats. You can leave them at home for long periods of time w/o worrying about them save for one of the cats vomiting on the carpet. However that problem is pretty much taken care of now since when one cat barfs, the other cat eats it.  Sometimes they knock things over but never really destroy anything unless they knock something over that is up high.

I had a pup that was awesome.  Lab, Border Collie mix.  Very smart, quiet, and extremely receptive to anything I'd say.  He'd sit and stay the first afternoon I got him.  Unfortunately my landlord found out I had him and now he's living the life of a farm dog chasing rabbits and four-wheelers.

we don't have a nice backyard for the dog to play in.

dogs couldn't give a rat's ass about backyards.  all they want is to interact with other dogs/humans/animals for large portions of each day.

but you're right about how you shouldn't get a dog.  if you want a daschund, that's a good sign you don't really want a dog.  if you really wanted a dog, you'd want a real dog.

About a year before.  They really don't have a say, since they're both under two.

My wife stays at home, so it'd be stupid to have separate checking accounts when she has no income at the moment.

Yeah.  Off-leash dog parks are great.  Does Topeka have one?

Wife wants a dachshund, she loves them.  I don't mind them, but i'd rather have a larger dog.  But the point remains, we don't have enough time to dedicate to a dog.

my sisters dog was killed last week because it was in a pen with a dog it shouldnt have been.

she was pissed. my dog was at the same place and came back with cuts and scars.

ALLERCA began deliveries of GD kittens to eager customers in 2006, and you too can now own an ALLERCA GD kitten. Priced at US$5,950*, the cost of an ALLERCA kitten is similar or less than some of the more exotic cat breeds available today.

I had a gray cat named touchdown(after the old mascot) when I was a kid.

My sister ran over it with a golf cart and its eyes popped out.

To answer original question, though, I'd go with a lab. Even if you don't want it for hunting they make awesome pets from my experiences...(have 2 now, and one before those two).

I always thought that Greyhounds need lots of exercise/love to run and that Bassett Hounds are by far the laziest dogs.

one would think that on the greyhound theory.

when the woodlands would have adoption day on all the washed up, senile and slow (retarded) dogs, my friends adopted 4 of them.

those 4 were the laziest sons of bitches ive ever known. (dog wise)

beagles are more hyper than greyhounds IMO.

beagles are horrible, unless you get the mini's.

I only know the one I have.  I have heard they can be pretty annoying and bark a lot, but ours is pretty docile and never been a dog that barks a ton, so that is nice.  Her main problem is that she jumps on people, but that is more our fault in training.

To no one in particular:

I always thought that Greyhounds need lots of exercise/love to run and that Bassett Hounds are by far the laziest dogs.

Trained them and owned them for 13 years.  To race them, yes, they need regular exercise.  To keep any of the muscle tone from the track you will need to provide exercise.  If that is not important to you they really don't need anything.

Yes they love to RACE, not necessarily run alone.  They love to kill the neighbors cat too, so breaking one of the kill instinct can be a long road if you intend to ever let one off the lead.   Most are dominant in nature, so issues with other dogs can be a problem, especially for the other dog if it thinks it can challenge one to a fight.  A greyhound would tear a pitbull a new one in nanoseconds.

In a home sitting, they will take up a spot on the couch and leave only when required.  They were treated as royalty for centuries and expected to do no work other than race, and expect to be treated as such.  They do make wonderful pets if you have time to spend re-training them.  Another note, there are many that smile.  Not some faint hint at a smile, a complete smile when truly happy at a situation.

Pound dogs are great if you find the right one for your situation.  As someone else said, they know and will love you forever.  Keep in mind they are not likely to be free, most places now require around $75 for the effort.  They have to find money somewhere.

Questions that you should consider before deciding, and I definitely am in the "get a dog" camp:

Apartment or home?
Fence or no?
An area to walk them if no fence?
Ability to take them out before work, after, and before bed?
etc....

Cats suck by the way (compared to a dog).

just a suggestion, stay away from breeds like terriers, and any sporting dog, they have a ton of energy and need a lot of caring. i would stay away from basset hounds, even though they are some of my favorite dogs, they are quite possibly the dumbest dogs on the planet, it took close to 2 years to get ours properly potty trained.

i'd have a look at this website and read up on what they are good for. a dogs breed, generally is its personality, and each dog fits in with certain surroundings.

here's what you need. half german sheperd, half great dane. they actually make a good house dog as long as you have a yard or area for them to run, they have a suprisingly slow metabolism.

Reminds me of the 3 dogs I saw out at Tuttle one time.

One great dane.
One small (but not toy) poodle.
One really freaking big poodle looking dog.

I don't even want to know how the mechanics of that came about.

I'd recommend a boxer.  I have a two year old named Riggs and he rocks.  Really good with kids and very loyal dogs.  Also, chicks love boxers.  Make sure to get a fawn though and not a brindle.

Boxers are neat dogs in my eyes.  I love their goofy'ness.  But they are also the dumbest dogs I've ever been around, which is not exactly a bad thing, it's what makes them so different and lovable.

Curious, why the no brindle angle, just color pref or attitude?  I know that the brindle in the greyhound came from being bred to bulldogs way back in the day to add some aggression, but the brindles were no more aggressive.

I'm biased, but I think the fawn looks better than the brindle (if you can find the right markings).  Also, it's pretty important to go through breeders when getting this type of dog because they are prone to health issues when they are older so you kind of have to be careful.  They used to be police dogs so they make good watch dogs too.

After thinking long and hard about it, and visiting a couple shelters, I decided that I'm not ready for a pup.  I think it would be cruel to leave him home in my apartment 9 hours a day while I'm at work.  And I don't have enough money if something were to happen (sickness, injury etc...)

Now I'm thinking about making a baby instead of getting a puppy......

Any recommended breeds?

Any recommended breeds?
