Can someone explain the origin?
Football 101, Professor Prince Post Rating
Football is still a game that is won and lost in the trenches. Your idea that you just need playmakers in space, and don't need stud linemen, is cute, but incorrect. If that fact wasn't driven home yesterday, it never will be.
Anyone think Freeman and the KSU running backs are still seeing James McClinton closing in on them this morning? And anyone think the KSU D backs are still seeing huge holes with Brandon McAnderson coming at them this morning?
The ability to run the ball when you need to do so, chew up clock, and keep the other offense watching the game, will never go out of style, no matter how many 5 wide receiver sets people throw out there.

It's remarkable that Prince has a better conference record than Mangino since 2006 w/o an o-line or d-line.

That's in jeopardy this year. I'm hoping this board is keeping its whininess to a minimum this week, but it's a safe assumption to say that we just don't have the offensive line we need to control a game. Bedore going down shouldn't make our entire line crumble.
-
We've missed you on Phog, book. You promised me you'd be around if KSU lost.
-
Pitts, WTF is doc referring to?
-
No clue, Rusty. Looking over your recruiting classes the past two years, I see that Prince landed 10 linemen. I know that Krehbiel was given the heave-ho, but did everyone else stick around?
-
He's sent a couple snyder guys (hafferty, boss, Schmidt) packing. Schmidt especially hurt, IMO.
-
I think Doc is referring to a comment that Prince made (which he's taking out of context) in which Prince said that the game is won on the outside/with skill players.

Exactly. It was from an interview where Prince was talking about the importance of landing a good receiver (Murphy maybe?) and in the middle of a rambling answer he said (paraphrasing the way a ku fan heard it) "Gone are the days of building from the trenches. Good teams are now built from the outside in." That quote was ridiculed on the ku boards for a while there, and I'm sure if I looked hard enough I could find the exact quote.
-

I doubt that.

You doubt I can find it, or you doubt it exists? For the possiblity of me actually finding the thread... you might have a point. It's not new and with the lack of a search feature on that board it would be a chore. For whether the quote exists or not, I heard him say it and I paraphrased what I heard. Since it was a while back I'm going on memory. As you can see from the post in question above, I wasn't the only ku fan to hear it.
-
You'd think a KSU fan would have heard it.
We just don't follow our head coach as closely as ku fans do.
-
IIRC, I think the source of the interview was on 610am, which is why no one really knows what was said, because only mildly retarded people and band enthusiasts listen to 610 sports.
-
In essense what Prince is saying (and what he's implied a lot) is you can take decent big HS kids (6-4 or so, 220 or so) that have good feet and work ethic and "make" good offensive lineman. However, you can't make a guy run a 4.3, you've got to recruit it, and its his opinion you need a lot of guys with that kind of speed (on both sides of the ball) to win college football games. I don't think he's so far off.

I heard Prince say on the "Ron Prince Show" tonight that teams are built from the outside in. In other words - skill players are more important than great line play. I hope I just misinterpreted what he said - but if I didn't I think he is wrong.

"Dominating the line of scrimmage is not a priority. Good football teams now are built from the outside in."

I dunno. That's a fairly damning quote, Rusty.
-
I'm sure an ex-OL coach said that. I'm sure it was worded exactly like that and I'm sure it wasn't taken out of context.
-
Two links, two different Nebraska fans, two different "quotes".
-

*shrug* Maybe you're right. I'm trying to think of a context something like that would actually look good in, however, and I'm coming up blank.

I tried to put it into context above. He was talking about the value of landing a fast Wide Receiver. By my memory, that is pretty close to how he stated his quote, and it stood out to me even more considering he was a former o-line coach. Why would he ever say that skill players are where you start to build a program? Maybe he doesn't really believe that, but it is what he said. Look at the first link... that is a ksu fan talking about what prince said and hoping he misunderstood. Prince definately stated that good teams were built from the outside in and strongly insinuated that was his main recruiting priority. That has been echoed in other philosophies such as Special Teams and wanting to get athletes in space.

I'm listening to the show now. I'm bored.

"Greg Burns has 2 National Championship rings, and 2 losses to K-State"

I can't believe Nubb fans listened to this crap. I'm more bored than I was before I started listening.
-
He said "calloused"!

katkid beat me to it.

"only way to win and be great is with a great defense"
"only way to win and be great is with a great defense and something that at least resembles a running game with the ability to throw the ball down the field "
There... fixed it for you.

"Tibs" was an All-American linebacker.

I'm going to be pissed if this quote was on "KC radio" and not the "Ron Prince Show".

I believe it was was on Neil and Marty. I don't know why you're listening to his radio show. If you ever read my posts you'd know that. :crybaby:

Surprised Auburn wasn't ranked 6, 7, or 8.

Well, at least I will make the "quotes" questionable. :-[
