Wow. What a huge stretch. That team lost four games!

Yes.

I think there's a high probability of it. We wouldn't have lost Marshall, we would have been in better shape for Texas, and wouldn't have had a hangover against OkSU. Perhaps Ell would have taken the national championship game a little more seriously than he took the Fiesta Bowl, too.
I'd like to thank the guys in that thread over there for ruining my afternoon by reminding me of 1998. Without a doubt, that was the worst feeling I've had in my life (which means I've actually had a pretty good life). Even today, it still feels like a shot to the gut. I was just a freshman that year, and me and my dad and my bro were all there...helluva long drive back. 2003 took a lot of the edge off that season, but the immediate dropoff of the last two years has brought back some of the pain.

I can only say that I feel like we should have been able to beat Marshall without a decent quarterback whether we were a legitimate national title contender or not. It reflects very poorly on the team that we didn't.
You cannot overstate how badly we blew it in 1998. It is such a rare opportunity and we nearly won the game on a number of individual plays that we simply failed to make.

You could argue that Roberson lost the Texas game for us. The stupid lateral to sproles while he was being tackled; fumbled the ball into UT's hands. If I recall correctly, we were even up at that point. All we had to do is run clock for 2 min or so. The one thing I vivedly remember is James Terry's Bone crushing block on UT's Linebacker... Don't remember his name, but you could hear his ribs slamming together. They had to drag him off the field while Terry just watched. That was pretty pimp.

Yes, but if he had been healthy and not coming off an injury, it might not have been that close.
On the other hand, it could have.
As for missing the opportunity in 1998, that's exactly right...that's why it still hurts so badly.

yeah... but if you guys haven't noticed yet, I enjoy playing devils advocate.

03 was way to hard of a schedule to run the table.
If Ell didn't get hurt, we maybe finish 13-2/12-3.
1998, &@#%. &@#% &@#% &@#%. If we won the title that year...everything would be so irrelevant.
-
yeah... but we didn't even beat Purdue... Who knows what could'a been.
-
We would have steam rolled tennessee. imo. Run for 200+ yards, imo.
-
You're prob right....
holy crap did we just agree?

i dunno that 98 tenn team has a darn good def on ncaa 06
why is there no all time kstate teams on that game
even mizzou has their 97 team on there
anyway...98...it just comes with the territory of being a K-State fan. Tons of heartbreaking chances at glory only to fall just short. What hurts most is we don't have that thing from the past to fall back on like other teams do....BUT when it FINALLY happens, it will be amazing. There will be justice in the world someday for the goodguys. :violin:

Exactly why 98 hurts so much

I never would have thought of that. I wonder why you did.

Jesse freaking Tetuan.

KSU not ready for prime time in 1998.
One of the biggest choke jobs I've ever seen ... that was a long 900 miles on Sunday.

Choke or not, I was proud of that team. God bless it.

A properly called "tip" instead of pass interference, and a healthy, head screwed on straight Jarred Cooper ... and no National Championship for OU in 2000.
-
Coop never fully regained his form after his pec injury. Crying shame. He's easily one of the most fun players to watch in KSU history.
-
Without a doubt!

Sorry had just watched "40 year old virgin" the day before.... We're putting the pu$$y on a pedastal.

Although Rusty seems to be the negative one, I don't think there is any way we would have got the NC back then.
