... play an OOC slate as utterly pathetic as the one ku played this year? I mean he didn't exactly schedule difficult games but I can't recall a KSU season ever featuring such an absolutely hapless cast of opponents.

Bill Snyder scheduled patsies in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2004.
It's funny how it was okay for Snyder to build a program this way, but Mangino gets criticized for the same thing.

1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2004 aren't nearly as horrible as ku's this year. 1994-1997 all included road games and 2004 included a beatdown from Fresno. 1998-2000 were honestly the only years that were comparable to the pathetic ku schedule.
And Snyder deserved (and received) plenty of criticism for his scheduling.

but Snyder followed up the weak scheduling with Big 12 wins.
-
1998-2000 was pathetic, however with the addition of the 4th OOC game, ku's schedule of 4 complete patsies at home has to be considered more pathetic.
-
98 was pretty bad. We were a top 5 ranked team playing Indiana St, LA-Monroe and Northern Illinois.
-
The thing about ku's schedule this year is pretty much all 4 teams they scheduled have been worse then expected. Central Michigan was thought to be pretty good but they're flat terrible, freaking North Dakota State blew them out. Toledo used to be one of the best teams in the MAC but their program is on a downward slide and I think the MAC in general has been down the past couple of years.
I'm not even criticizing Mangino for his schedule he can play whoever he wants but ku fans just need to suck it up and admit the teams they have played all suck.

Agreed. What I find amazing is that he was receiving criticism by '93 or '94 on it.

We then followed it up by winning 5 or more conference games..and in one instance..ran the conference table.

I don't think it was too bad then because it was such a feel good story and was kind of odd.
98, when we were awesome and a nationwide story and played BS's worst schedule ever is when the criticism really became loud, IMO.

Rutgers OOC schedule was pretty damn weak besides Maryland of course.

Fitz has a great stat about this but I don't quite remember it exactly. It's something to the effect of.....
Only once in the Bill Snyder era did he schedule all four non conference games at home and, oh by the way, one of those four opponents was USC. ku ain't gonna play anybody like USC.....EVER!

I don't fault ku for attempting to build their team by doing it. I think its ridiculous how awesome they think they are after they beat them though.

In defense of Snyder's 1998 schedule, he had agreed to play in the Eddie Robinson Classic in KC vs La Tech, but at the last minute, they canceled on him and instead took Nebraska. I know Snyder was extremely pissed about that and felt the organizers had deceived him. Anyway, that was the game where Troy Edwards had 21 catches for 405 yards against NU and ended up winning many year-end awards. Also, I think Bobby Newcomb got hurt in that game if I am not mistaken, thus paving the way for Eric Crouch to get some playing time. Anyway, it would have been a tough opponent to balance the 1998 schedule.

I agree with Java. Obviously Mangino wanted an easy schedule, but I don't think he foresaw what a perfect storm of pure crap his OCC would be.

I don't think the 2000 schedule can really be compared to ku's schedule this year. KSU played Iowa that year at the Eddie Robinson Classic. Granted, Iowa was not that great of a Big 10 team at the time, but they were better than they were in 1999. Also, Louisiana Tech was coming off an 8-3 season in 1999 in which they beat eventual SEC champion Alabama. But granted, La Tech was not as good in 2000 as they were in 1999. But I honestly think that ku's schedule this year is way worse this year than ours in 2000.
