Title: ku Defense
Post by: catdude33 on October 01, 2007, 08:00:41 PM
What makes many people on here, and especially Gopo, think that ku will simply be able to "take away the flat" from our passing game?  If it was that simple to "take away the flat" and the short routes why would any coach ever try to implement the WCO.  I mean, its tough to take away the short crossing routes and passes to the flat without making yourself vulnerable to other plays, and I don't just mean bombs straight down the field.  Didn't Texas know that we like to run short crossing routes and passes into the flat?  It just doesn't make sense to me that everyone believes that we will need to figure out some other way to move the ball because ku is going to completely shut down that aspect of the game for us.  Someone help me out here, I didn't win a state championship playing high school football so I really don't know anything about the sport.

well since that's all we've shown this year I'm guessing they are saying that because they have had 2 weeks to watch film and game plan for it.

Not having a verticle passing game is going to bite us sooner or later.

I don't know that we DON'T have a verticle passing game but if we do we haven't shown it.

Vertical passing game is necessary when you rely heavily on the run.  Successful WCO's have not employed vertical passing games on a regular basis....they stretch the field in a 15 yard by 53 yard box.  That said, you can almost always game plan to take something away...if they choose to throw all their marbles in taking away the crossing routes and short passing game, something else will open up.  My guess is teams are not doing this because they're afraid of the weapons available for the big play.

I think we may see more vertical passing starting this week.  Just a hunch.  Seems like we could be successful with Murphy and maybe Pierce.
We threw a couple vertical passes to Gonzo, who isn't going to out run anyone, but is tall enough to go up and get it....sometimes.

really need a WR to step up.  Besides Jordy and Deon if we continue to throw this much.
