If you have a TV tuner card on your computer you can record straight to your hard drive.  If you have windows media center it is basically just like tivo.  You can use any number of programs though.  Here is an old CNet article.  It is from 2005 but seems relevent to your situation.

EDIT:  Also, there are HD tuner cards with cable card capability so if you have an HD subscription at your house you can record in HD.

I'm looking to build a dvr computer myself, but I haven't done enough research yet.  I need to figure out if/what card I can use in my computer and what software I need so that I can run from directv satellite-HD to my computer for recording.  So far the forums out there haven't given me any good ideas.

Yeah, that would work.  But it would be a hassle.

It should work.  It is cheap because, with DVRs and the like, it is outdated and you have to buy discs for it (though they are cheap also).

don't be a pussy, just open the case and stick it in the slot, you can't screw it up.  Once it is seated firmly, put the screw in the top, then put the case back together, turn on the computer, insert driver disk.

Save yourself pain and suffering, mang.

he's right, it's really not hard.  get a capture card, plug it into your PCI slot, screw the coax into your capture card. configure software, click record.

i don't know if you can get a whole football game onto a DVD, can you?

Oh crap, good point. idk, maybe if I stop the recording during commercials. crap idk. I would use the capture card but my comp is already so F'ed up and i don't have hardly any memory left, and I read somewhere that 1 hour is equal to 1 gig, and I need to save space so if I convert from a DVD I have a program that can change the file size.

Are you confusing memory with hard drive space?  Maybe you shouldn't be taking apart your computer  :banghead:

If you are out of drive space, an easy solution is the 500 gig mybook or any other external drive you can plug right into your usb drive.

If your computer is running so badly as you say, maybe you should wipe the drive and start over (I.E. reformat)

Yes I have like 1 gig left of HD space. And as of right now I'm running low on money so the 500gig mybook is out of the question.

you don't have to get the 500 gig obviously, you can get a 100gig drive for like 50-75 dollars from your worst buy in manhattan now.

Let me help you....

Anything on that list...and don't tell me you can't afford a drive for 75 dollars if you are planning on buying this dvd burner and everything else.  Stop drinking for two nights and you will make back your 75 dollars pretty quick.

Sounds like you got every excuse in the book to NOT do it the correct, efficient way.

If it doesn't come with software you can find free stuff.  Don't know if it's worth a damn but may get the job done.

Just a thought, but you might want to make certain you have an available PCI slot on your motherboard.

Just a thought, but you might want to make certain you have an available PCI slot on your motherboard.

If he doesn't have an open slot, I'd be suprised.  Even HP isn't stupid enough to give no extra slots on a board.  Even those tiny ass Dell's have an extra PCI slot.  This guy has obviously never even thought of opening his box, so it isn't like he installed something already either.
