Title: Has there ever been more coverage for an 0-4 team ever?
Post by: Kat Kid on September 24, 2007, 08:56:06 AM
I thought it was funny the first two weeks, but Jesus Christ can we just stop talking about them already?

Notre Dame wins, we talk about them.
Notre Dame loses, we talk about them.
Notre Dame goes 4-0, we talk about them.
Notre Dame goes 0-4, we talk about them.

I never really cared about Notre Dame before the Willingham to Weis fiasco and in that sense I'm loving this, but why not cover Florida or Oklahoma or one of the teams that actually has a chance of winning a National Championship?

Point taken.

As a Kansas State fan who usually lollerz at the constant victimhood, East Coast bias and refs hate us etc.

I think this is one of several clear instances in which the tradition rich college football punditry class and pre-season ranking system fails the game by punishing those upstart programs like South Florida, Rutgers etc. and focusing on big name programs for no reason other than they are big name programs.

It will get worse as the losses pile up.

I will also become more interested as losses pile up.  They have no shot at their next handful of games and will start 0-8.  Should be fun.

Don't forget the Catholic angle, KK.

I'm not joking, either, sadly.

This year's Irish have a real shot to challenge the 1960 squad (2-8) for worst ND team ever.  Because of that, the story will continue to be big.

I know.  BYU, Notre Dame are both national schools.  Just think if Baylor had any athletic tradition, it would be just as unbearable.

But I don't think 0-4 coverage has anything to do with Catholics, I think the same would be true if Michigan were 0-4 or USC were 0-4.

It just really bothers me that no one is consistently talking up South Florida or the parity angle when that is a much more interesting story than ND.  Even the Willingham/Weis angle is funnier/more interesting than just ND sux and the constant apologizing for why Weis isn't winning.  It all boggles the mind.

Beano Cook was interviewed on ESPN radio saturday afternoon.  He talked on and on about the integration of college football and the SEC beginning to recruit black athletes as one significant factor in Notre Dame fading from being a football power.  Seriously.

does anyone think that NBC having that HUGE contract with ND doesn't impact anything? that is a HUGE driver... example - Miami is a football monster who sucks and is getting very little coverage. Yeah, there is still some for the 'Canes, but very little in comparison to ND or all the coverage that old Thug U got in the past.

Why does ESPN have to cover it because they are on NBC?

Miami's history is from the 80s until now.  Notre Dame is considered one of the most storied program in college football history with the likes of Bama and Oklahoma.  That's the difference with the Canes.

No doubt the exclusive contract with NBC factors in as well.

true, still - I would like to quote a lovely tune from the 80s - 90s "What have you done for me late-ly"
