Here's my email:
I just saw the video on New Traditions at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, and I've got to be honest with you in how I feel, as many other long time KState fans feel the same way. The Power Towel seems like it could be a good idea that many people would really get into; unfortunately, the Willie chant is mildly embarrassing. Maybe it was just the production of the video, but I cringed at the thought of this song being played in the stands and pray to god that this video doesn't accompany it.
As a fan that has traveled to many venues, I've gotten a feel for what tradition is and isn't. Some schools have successfully started new traditions, while others seem like a flagrant rip-off of other traditions. Watching this video reminded me of the Iowa State's of the world. While I mean no disrespect to Iowa State, every Iowa state game day atmosphere I've ever been to is full of cheap, canned-effect, video production with fans that have no knowledge of their school or athletic history. Kansas State is better than this. Maybe I'm being too judgmental, but we both know that a lot of this comes down to image and image is all about perspective. Kansas State is an athletic program that deserves to be in the spotlight. And when trying to develop new traditions to raise ourselves above the rest, they should be founded on stable ground, not some cheap video effects with our beloved mascot playing an electric guitar in front of purple and silver fireworks. I know for a fact that this will be laughed at by every big time opponent that enters our stadium, as I still laugh at some of the stuff I've seen at some of the smaller schools. This is where perspective comes into place, as I’ll never see Iowa State as a team with a rich football tradition partly because of how their athletic dept treats their tradition.
We don't need to resort to this stuff as we already have a solid history that new traditions can spawn off of. Wabash Cannonball for example, something that will never be topped.
If a new tradition is something desired to help transition us into a new era of Kansas State Football, open it up to the fans. We've got some creative minds out there. Maybe through online voting of new traditions or something circulated through out the student body. Heck, some schools have Cheer practice for their student body and fans - why can't we get our fans to come together and help build Kansas State into something we all want?
Anyway, just my two cents. New traditions are fine and dandy and I know that some have to be coerced into getting started.
While I'm at it, Might as well get a few others off my chest. Here's a KState fan's opinion on a couple of things I've recently noticed.
*Team's walk to the stadium through the crowd: Loved It
*WE ARE K STATE: hated it, It's been overdone and publicized by too many schools
*Halftime photo's of young wildcats: I think it's great; loved it.
*Video weight lifting thing of the fans lifting a cartoon-ish bar bell on the video board: Hated it, even some of the twelve year olds I brought to the game thought it was dumb.
*Upcoming year's Power towel: I could learn to love it
*Willie Chant: I hope you didn't spend money on that.

Here's a response from Laura Tietjen
XXXXXX,
Thanks for your e-mail and your ideas. We do consistently ask for feedback from our fans, conduct fan research, and utilize focus groups to develop our concepts. The Willie Chant is just like our Willie skits – often parodies (like this one of an 80’s MTV video). Fans have told us one of the things they love about Willie is that they don’t know who he is going to pretend to be next….rock star one week – Pirates of the Caribbean the next week. Opponents have told us that they wish their mascot was as good as Willie.
Along with our traditional band songs and cheers, K-State tradition also includes the crowd cheering to the “Rumble”. Again, other schools have often told us that they wish they had something similar. We’ll continue to use the “Rumble” but it sure would be nice to have something else to complement that song. Quite frankly, we would like to use the band but at football games, fans have consistently told us they cannot hear the band so when we need a quick crowd reaction, we go with canned music. The Willie Chant video was a way to introduce another crowd bumper. The idea was not to play the video after we introduced it the first time…just like a Willie skit.
I hope this information has been helpful.
Thanks for your support of K-State athletics!
Sincerely,
Laura Tietjen
Associate Director of Athletics
Kansas State University

Well, that makes sense. The video is cheesy and slightly embarrassing but so are each and every one of the Willie skits I've ever seen.

I didn't read that, but I'm embarrassed for you for putting so much thought into this stuff.

my actual response to her was that several big 12 schools are already laughing at us.

Willie is a better in-game mascot than any I've seen. Those bare arms you phlock like to mock actually allow him to do crap other than just walk around like a lost retard in a costume.
BTW, what the hell is the "Rumble"?

willie did an excellent job.
guess some fans are okay with pure crap.

you should give her links to all the websites making fun of it, like edsbs.com

go for it.
I apparently have already put too much "thought" into it.

Yeah, I'm dying for baby Jay to be my mascot. Or a Longhorn taking a dump on the sidelines.
-
It was a nice e-mail and it's exactly what KSU AD's office needs from fans.
-
I feel bad. I'm not embarrassed, just amused.
sorry, will.
-
No need to be sorry; It didn't bother me at all. I just felt your post warranted some sort of reply... and didn't want to sound like a douche.
-
Nothing beats the excitement of Giant Robot and Giant Robot Jr. plodding around the field in Toucan Sam costumes: Afterall, that's what Saturdays are made for!!
-
Seriously though; what the hell is the "Rumble" she's talking about?

Exactly. Throw a furry suit on him and you think he's going to be a ton better? Congratulations to ku for having an "original" mascot, but it doesn't do a damn thing. It walks around and rubs kids heads. Willie starts all kinds of sh*t. I've certainly seen very few that are as into the game as Willie.

Let's get ready to rummmmmbbble...? (clap, clap, clap)

No &@#%'n Clue

this video is no different from the goofy willy skits we've done since the early 90's.
You guys are just made that the rest of the nation finally figured out how goofy they are.
-
The gary glitter song is, like, 10x better than the rumble song.

That's RIGHT! PLUS, he is buff and has a nice ass. I will NEVER EVER want for some stupid fluffy mascot. No way. Or how would you like a big rubber blow up doll like lil red? LMAO! ESPN did a poll a few years back on mascots. Willie was in the top ten. Nough said.

Well... I'm glad to know it's just a skit. However, this is the 1st skit I remember being a promo for a "new tradition". That is the heart of the problem. When Willie does silly things it's ... well, silly and mildly amusing. When he asks us to all do it with him... then it takes on a whole new dimension.
Why are we starting a tradition from something out of the 80s? I think it's cool if they had played the vid once at one game... however posting it as a promo for a new tradition was a mistake.
I hope the whole song/chant works better in a game environment than in front of the computers at home. Still not convinced. Oh well... time will tell.
I'm ready to move on now...
-
So you guys hate the willie chant so badly to send Laura an email?? :crybaby:
I love it....and please stop. We'll all adapt to it when it is played and done at BSFS. You'll catch onto it and it will be a "rich" tradition. :ksu:

Exactly. We do sh1t like this all the time, you're just mad our rivals got a hold of it.
Understandable. I've seen much more "wtf??" type stuff at opposing teams stadiums.
-
OK I might be wrapping my mind around this...the hokey video is done only once in place of hokey other willie skit....in the future, the same "guitar rip" is played for the fans to respond to....sans video.
Is this what she is saying?
They had better hand out towels if they want the other thing to work.

Yeah, we do stuff like this all the time -- it just plays a lot better when it's done once as a hokie skit at a game, and not in the name of "starting a tradition".
They should have put the song to highlights (with cuts to fans cheering during the chant segments), and then superimpose the "K" "STATE!" over our lynch mob D smacking the lights out of numerous hiesman candidates. That might almost be cool.

My e-mail to Laura:
Is it asking too much to mix in some stilts?
The 80's rock solo is awesome, but if William was on stilts and wearing a bicycle helmet Big Cat style it would definitely be awesomer.
Thanks in advance.

Stay tuned for her response.

And some firebreathing Katpak golf-club heads. And some purple robots with lazers shooting out of their eyes. And some vampire wings for Willie to flap around in.

I am firewalled from youtube at work, so I just saw that HORRIBLE video ... are you JOKING? That might be enough right there to get us kicked out of the Big 12 for being a school of ASS-CLOWNS! Traditions happen they aren't created for the sake of having a tradition... cant we just stick with the Wabash Cannonball? We just need to get EVERYONE to do it... including the Geriatric Motherfu*kers who yell at me for standing up... GEEZ... I just puked!
-
Don't worry fatty I just sent my email to laura, expect your "birth" video on soon. I'm srsly a really good writer when I try really hard. cerial.

Actually, I'm not as upset any more. I wrote the email yesterday when I thought the video would be played each time the song was. I don't care if it's only done once, I was just afraid it was going to be an annoying thing that stuck around the entire season.
-
This idea is right up there with whoever came up with the idea to show highlights from the 98 ccg before A&M in 05.

I think it's subtle genius. I also think they are only showing it because they don't have the rights to "Catlab."
