Worst stadium? I've only seen one other poster mention it... Manhattan, Kansas. Visited in 2002… and enjoyed a win after the Horns blocked a late KSU field goal trying to tie and send it to overtime.
We stayed in Junction City… a little over 20 miles away if I remember right.
For openers… there’s only the equivalent to a FM road in and out of Manhattan from IH 70. Getting into Manhattan before the game wasn’t so bad… but getting out was a nightmare… as the line of traffic was literally bumper to bumper for miles (10 or 15 miles if I remember right)… all the way back to IH 70. I remember cresting several hills along the way… just to see a line of taillights as far as the eye could see… literally… moving at a snails pace.
Arrived at the stadium… and parked in a dry and dusty cow pasture across the street from the stadium. The car was almost unrecognizable from dust after the game. Thankfully… it didn’t rain… as it would have been a quagmire. Still… I’ve probably parked in worse locations. At least it wasn’t far from the stadium.
As we head for the stadium… we haven’t even left the “lot” when we begin to get bombarded by some of the most drunk and obnoxious fans I’ve ever experienced (night game… maybe they had been drinking all day). I’m used to drunk and obnoxious… but at K-State it was different. Tough to put my finger on it… but they were an “in your face” kind of obnoxious… almost as if trying to provoke a fight… and the stream of them approaching seemed endless. I’m all for a little good-hearted smack before a game… but we didn’t even go there… you just kind of knew instinctively not to… the climate was hostile… you could “feel” it. We just smiled and kept walking.
Made it to the parking lots surrounding the stadium where the boosters (many with their RV’s) were parked. Did it get any better? Nope! The only difference between that lot and the one we had parked in was that now we had 7 to 12 year old kids walking up and giving us a ration while their more well-to-do parents just smiled… “That’s my boy!” These kids were using pretty salty language in front of their parents. Amazing… as we thought to ourselves… “They must start ‘em young”. Out of all this… one classy older gentleman came up to us and apologized… and asked us not to judge K-State on what we were being exposed to. We thanked him… and said “No problem… we’re used to it… we don’t think anything of it”.
And now for the stadium…
Once inside the stadium… we’re ready to find our seats… upper deck… so we begin to climb the stairs. No problem… I’m in good health. However, to date this has been the only stadium I’ve been to that divides the visiting fans into two sections. One… was at the field level on the end opposite the field house… and the others… myself included… were in the upper-most deck at the opposite corner of the stadium. In separating the fan base like that… it makes the amount of noise you can generate seem very insignificant… you feel cut off… and the band seems a mile away. I gave Bill Snyder credit there… as I remember thinking at the time he must have had something to do with it.
Okay… so… now that we’ve found our seats… let’s use the facilities and get something to eat and drink before the game starts. Walk out onto the upper deck concourse and there is nothing. No restrooms… no concessions. We ask a stadium official where we can find what we’re looking for… only to learn that all food and restrooms are back on the ground floor of the stadium. So… back down we go. And it wasn’t just us… as the upper deck had a majority of K-State fans… and why they don’t expect better is beyond me. If you should have to get up during a game… you’re going to miss a lot of the action just getting up and down the stairs. Imagine having to leave the upper deck at Royal-Memorial and return to ground level for food and restrooms. Granted… Royal-Memorial is bigger… and better equipped to get you up and down… but you get the idea.
During the game… the K-State fans were just as obnoxious as pre-game… all game… especially as they were rallying late… when they appeared ready to kick a field goal and send the game into overtime. However… once the kick was blocked… they flooded out of the stadium en masse immediately after. Save for the Horn fans… the stadium was empty. One minute you’re surrounded… the next… almost without you realizing it… you’re standing alone. Clearly… they could dish it out… but they wanted no part of taking it.
As we descended the stairs afterwards a group of Longhorn fans shouted “Whose house? Horns house!”... and I could tell every Longhorn fan was of the same mindset after being subjected to the K-State fans vitriol throughout the evening… and we were just letting out some of what we had kept in to that point.
Once we reached ground level, one K-State fan in her mid-40’s had the audacity to tell us we really shouldn’t be doing that because we were just making ourselves obnoxious… and I couldn’t help but wonder if she even recognized the same, if not worse, behavior in her own fan base. Hell… I sat in semi-shock at Royal-Memorial late (the Texas band had already marched out) after the Horns lost to K-State in 1999… and had a K-State woman my mother’s age make a bee line across three sections to where I was sitting with a friend just to tell me “In your house! Humph!”… with her daughter (about my age) following behind chuckling.
Anyway… then came that trip back to the hotel I mentioned earlier.
We travel to one… and occasionally two… road games a year… and have been to several of the Big 12 stadiums more than once since the league was formed… but we’ve vowed once was enough for Manhattan.
There are others… the amenities at the Cotton Bowl definitely suck… but I personally allow the historical significance of the place to overshadow the inconveniences.

I remember this like it was yesterday. :curse:

God, our rivals hate us so much. Good thing there is a whole state seperating us or we would be at each other's throats 24/7. Same with USC.

Well, you can't blame them. Our fans are mean.
AND THE TRAFFIC! :ohno:

Wow, we really are rivals with Texas

I'm sorry, but this is a complete lie.

Obviously, but it's nice to know that they feel so strongly about us

At the time of this game I was 12.

Someone who goes to games in Austin is complaining about traffic?? That's rich.

Vanny,
I've got to give you props for that one !

except the fact that there isn't any manhattan titty bar....

Its great how it is justified when they are obnoxious, especially seeing as how they are the away team. If I go to an away game, I expect and am fine with about anything short of physical violence.
-
Waaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! We had to sit away from our other arrogant prick friends!!!!! :violin:

Things to do in Nebraska:
1. Go to NU Football games.
2. Watch Manure Fires.
I always laugh when people get all dramatic. I have never witnessed anything close to the kind of behavior at KSU he just described unless we're talking about the first night game drunkfest that happened back in 1982. Plus there's nothing funnier than somebody who I guess lives in Austin bagging on traffic.

I remember for the '02 games vs. USC & Texas that the cow sh1t was really blowing in from the east. Nothing the "texans" aren't already used to though.

Of course he had a crapty time. He stayed in Junction City.

JUNK TOWN REPRESENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!1
-
CU has the worst fans in the B12. OU has the dumbest. NU has Vanros which says a lot. KSU has the friendliest. As Ohio St fans said last year, UT fans were the best they've seen. I will say that sometimes UT fans are a little too humble considering how dominant the team is.

except the fact that there isn't any manhattan titty bar....
There was in 98 (but this takes place in 2002)
Be very glad its gone.

Dr. Love's wasn't in Manhattan :-*

QFT, that town sucks. The closest titty bar is in junction.
-
Manhattan has as many lanes in and out of it as Austin does...and Manhattan is 1/100th the size....traffic smack ROCKS.
Nice ONE interstate Austin.
-
I was at that game; I was parked in that cow pasture; and I hope to god I was one of the asshole, drunk, obnoxious fans who told this douche where to shove his horns.

technicality.

But the dude should be relieved to know that there is nothing but construction between "IH 70" and Manhattan - and it'll be like that for many more years.
We need to invite that poster over here.
-
I was there. The Texas fans were starting a lot of fights too. Bumper to bumper 10-15 miles my ass. That's because you wranglers don't know where the f**k you're going.
-
Leaving right after the game: dumb. Taking that route out to interstate: dumber. Take the secret exit and you get out much faster, despite it being a few miles longer.
-
Getting owned like ut has by KSU makes them very bitter. And very creative in their fabrications. I bet this turdburglar is really a ku fan.
-
"they have nasty fans" is certainly based off of perspective. Never been to Manhattan, but as with any visiting sports event, a ton of that depends on where you sit.
I would imagine quite a few of those problem children were those that don't know how to handle a rise to competitiveness such as the rise K-State had when all of a sudden they were competing on a national scale after decades of being an "easy win." When new to such things, they may not know how to handle all of a sudden being winners.
In person, every K-State fan I've known has been a very laid back, cool individual, and generally objective. The other nice thing is they generally knew quite a bit about all teams, not just their own, showing a lack of myopia that infects some fans of certain school. I can say the same of NU fans for that matter.
The only fanbase I've found that is generally truly obnoxious in person as they are on the smack boards have been the Aggies and Sooners.
Coincidence? Probably not.
-
I can say the same of NU fans for that matter.
This line ruins all validity your post may have oterwise had. :blank:

Wranglers? Speaking as a ksuck fan?
Pot meet kettle.

I know, they are terrible posters, for the most part. I'm just saying, I've known and worked with a few NU fans, including an ex-NU player (not a superstar), and none of them were rude, warmongering folks.
Again, as basic as this, it is of course perspective. Had I run into, or known, super rude NU fans, I would feel differently.

Yeah, the dumbass couldn't find the restroom, but locating the "secret exit" shouldn't have been a problem.

You are perfectly correct... I have and will always be able to find alternate routes back out of Manhattan. If this jackoff would have parked closer to Ahern, did a little walking, and taken side streets, the problem would have been solved.
I now live in Huntington, WV where Marshall is located (awesome town, you all need to check it out if we play here again) EVERY ONE OF THE FANS who made it out to Manhattan said we were first class fans, even after that loss in '03. I am sure that there are some A Hole fans (like everywhere), but there is no way in hell that we compare to CU... I have a family member who was there when the ENTIRE student section was kicked out of the stadium. Nobody can compare to CU... not even MU - but that is a different story for a different day/post.
