Second baseman Mark Grudzielanek and club officials reached an agreement Monday on a one-year contract extension. Terms were not announced, but the deal is believed to match Grudzielanek’s current $4 million salary.
The new deal also positions Esteban German to remain in a utility role for 2008. He had been viewed as Grudzielanek’s likely replacement.
The Royals now have a combined $24.45 million committed to five players in guaranteed salaries for 2008. The others: pitcher Gil Meche, $11 million; shortstop Angel Berroa, $4.75 million; outfielder David DeJesus, $2.5 million; and pitcher John Bale, $2.2 million.
