Title: W2W4 in Chiefs Preseason

Croyle starts: They want what they’ve seen from Brodie Croyle in camp: accurate throws, good decision-making, no turnovers.

Young safeties: The Chiefs are confident Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page will hold up all season. Tonight is a good test.

Next Dante? They like rookie Ean Randolph but are unsure about his decision-making and ability to catch the ball.

Calling all receivers: Dwayne Bowe won’t play tonight. That leaves an opening for Samie Parker, Jeff Webb, Chris Hannon and others.

Can he do more than fight? Will Svitek needs a strong showing at left offensive tackle for injured Damion McIntosh.

He was 5-8 for 49 yards and 1 INT. 10 yards/completion is pretty good but that interception was as bad a decision as you can make.

Young safeties: The Chiefs are confident Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page will hold up all season. Tonight is a good test.

I thought the entire defense played pretty well. Benny Sapp had the fumble return for a TD and Patrice Majondo-Mwamba got the safety. They also get points for holding the Browns to field goals after the offense turned it over. I also like to see defenders run to the football and I saw alot of that last night.

Next Dante? They like rookie Ean Randolph but are unsure about his decision-making and ability to catch the ball.

Randolph didn't do anything spectacular but he didn't screw up either. He, along with Chris Hannon, had some really nice kickoff returns though.

Calling all receivers: Dwayne Bowe won’t play tonight. That leaves an opening for Samie Parker, Jeff Webb, Chris Hannon and others.

Hannon and Michael Allan stood out to me.

Can he do more than fight? Will Svitek needs a strong showing at left offensive tackle for injured Damion McIntosh.

You'll have to be the judge as to whether you think the offensive line was a factor in the in effective play of the quarterbacks.

Either way it's good to have some game film to build upon. HCHE said that Huard will start Thursday’s game against Miami.

HCHE said the starters, with Damon Huard at quarterback, should play into the second quarter against Miami.

1. Better QB Play

Just give us one good drive. Eat up a lot of clock, cover alot of yards and SCORE. Whoever accomplishes that should be the starter in Houston

2. Better Pass Rush

We couldn't get to the QB against Cleveland and it sure would be nice to get to Trent Green a few times

3. Dwayne Bowe's first action

He hasn't been in practice for very long but it would be really nice to get him the ball a couple of times so we can see what he can do

4. Win the game

I guess if you're going to "Play to win the game.....Hello" we might as well "Play to win the game.....Hello"

5. First Team Defensive Points

The 9 defensive points in Cleveland came via a safety from a guy who probably won't make the team and the TD came from a backup. The starters tackled well but I'd like to see more.

I don't get how Huard got so bad so fast. He was brilliant last season. Croyle looked great in that first drive and made an equally awful decision on the next one. I guess that's what we're going to have to live with if he is chosen to be the starter.

1. Better QB Play

Brodie Croyle's first drive was brilliant. He was 5-6 and it lead to a touchdown. As brilliant as that first drive was the interception he threw was horrible. You need to throw that one at one of the back pile on's so that your receiver is the only guy that has a chance to catch it. He'll learn that pretty soon but if you're going to start a "rookie" QB you're going to have to learn to live with things like that.

Again.....I have no idea how Huard got so bad so fast.

2. Better Pass Rush

The Dolphins QB's all had decent stats and I can't find any information on sacks, and I don't remember any, so I'll say that this wasn't accomplished. What I do remember from what I saw is that we've suddenly forgotten how to tackle after we did a nice job of that in preseason Game 1. If anyone thinks otherwise please speak up.

3. Dwayne Bowe's first action

I can't find him in the box score. Did he get in?

4. Win the game

Uh.....Nevermind

5. First Team Defensive Points

Next.....

Correction.....

The Chiefs got 1 sack for a 6 yard loss. On the other hand.....We gave up 4 sacks for 24 yards lost.

It turns out that a sore leg could end the Chiefs QB controversy. Huard didn’t practice Monday. He stood close by with an ice pack on his chronically sore right calf. He noticeably favored the leg when he walked.

Huard has been bothered by the sore calf during training camp, but this was the first time he missed a practice because of it. There was no indication the injury would keep him out long term, but the Chiefs were unsure whether he would practice today or play in Thursday night’s preseason game against New Orleans at Arrowhead Stadium.

Edwards said over the weekend that Croyle would start against the Saints and play the entire first half and perhaps into the third quarter.

Asked what Huard’s absence on Thursday night might do to the quarterback battle, Edwards said: “Then you have to make the decision based on the information you have on hand. We’ll go back over the preseason games and the practices and everything else. That’s how we’ll make our decision. This (wouldn’t) kill (Huard’s) chances.”

This is great news but he missed training camp and a couple of meaningless preseason games.

I didn't get on yesterday to nail down any points of emphasis for last night's game but here are my thoughts post game:

The offense was pathetic with just 79 yards and five first downs through three quarters (two of those first downs came from penalties). Obviously the offense would have looked better if L.J. would have played but he didn't need to play in a meaningless preseason game. Brodie Croyle's numbers weren't impressive but I did like some decisions that he made. As I said earlier though he needs to be more consistent in his decision making. The offensive line wasn't very good but it will be better once Damion McIntosh comes back.

I was more disappointed in the defense believe it or not. Drew Brees, Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister were able to do just about anything they wanted while they were in the game.

Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said quarterback Damon Huard won’t play in Thursday’s preseason finale at St. Louis.

Huard has been nursing a sore calf, but he’s been through full workouts the last few days.

“I’d say it’s more of a precaution,” Edwards said. “If he had to play a game, there is no doubt (he could do it). I just want to keep him out of harm’s way.”

Right tackle Kyle Turley missed Tuesday’s practice for personal reasons. Edwards said Turley will play against the Rams.

So Damon Huard isn't going to play and I've heard that Casey Printers is injured and won't play as well. That means that Brodie Croyle will play the entire game?

The kid from Princeton will play.

What kid from Princeton? The only other QB on the roster is Omar Jacobs. Where did he come from?

1 Stay healthy. All coaches live in fear of losing one or more star players in the final tuneup. The Chiefs are perilously thin at a number of positions, so getting out of this one intact is of priority importance.

2 Sustain a drive or two. The preseason has been almost a waste for the Chiefs, at least from an offensive standpoint. In what little time the starters play, they can validate a training camp’s worth of work by moving down the field and putting points, preferably six, on the scoreboard.

3 A confident kicker. Rookie Justin Medlock had a rough week of practice. The Chiefs, with their offensive struggles, figure to play a lot of low-scoring games, at least early in the season. They’re going to need a reliable kicker. It wouldn’t hurt to give him a few chances to have some success.

4 A young quarterback. Brodie Croyle is the backup, but for how long? He’s going to be playing sooner or later, so these snaps he gets tonight aren’t wasted. How will he bounce back from last week’s disaster? A good showing could get him back in the lineup that much quicker.

5 Roster battles. Final cuts are due Monday, and most of the decisions have been made. It’s too late at most positions for those on the outside to do themselves any good. A possible exception is wide receiver, where only Eddie Kennison has distinguished himself.
