Title: Should JoePa Retire?

Joe Paterno apparently likes the view from the press box better than the sideline. So much so, that the coaching legend said Tuesday that he's considering coaching away from the field again this season.

"I'm not so sure that's not the better way to do it, and I've debated that," the 80-year-old coach told reporters, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

A broken right leg and torn knee ligaments suffered when he was run over by a player during a game at Wisconsin near the end of last season caused Paterno to miss a game and coach the Outback Bowl from a coach's box.

Paterno said his knee is fine now. He said he hopes to be on the sideline for the Nittany Lions' Sept. 1 opener at home against Florida International, but the press box is a viable alternative.

"You can see so much more, you can do things," he told reporters, according to the Post-Gazette. "I tried not to interfere with the guys upstairs because they know what they're doing. But, every once in awhile, I'd drop a little note to them and say, 'Hope to get this,' or 'That corner's playing awfully tight.'

"You're really a cheerleader most of the time down on the sideline. ... I enjoyed being upstairs, I really did. I sat down, had a nice time, had a cup of coffee. I felt like a newspaper guy. I was even able to watch television."

The time has come to put JoePa down.  Take him out back and try not to cry.  It's like ol yeller except wrinkly and old balls.

My seats have been lower recently so I've gotten used to it but it is easier to see the higher you are. I don't see why this is such a big deal.

My take on it is that a HEAD coach should be on the sidelines. Even if all he does is give praise or chew butt, he should be there. How would they dump the gatorade on him up in the box?

Joe Paterno is a legend, and he earned the right to go when he wants to. However, since 1999 their yearly records, in order, are...

5-7, 5-6, 9-4, 3-9, 4-7, 11-1, 9-4

So there was three good years, and four god-awful years. I think it would be best for their program if he stepped aside and turned over the reigns to some young coach. However, I also think Paterno thinks he will probably die soon after retiring (a lot of people who have worked one job so long would), so he is holding on for as long as he can.

* Side note: That 3-9 team was won of the powerhouse teams Solich beat to achieve 10-3. The other two ooc teams that year were from the Sun Belt Conference or whatever it's called.

Don't discount what he brings in recruiting by being their head coach, they should ride that horse as long as he's still bring in the chippers.

Remember the other poll we had about JoePa?

Who would die first, Mangino or Paterno?   <<<<< Mangino won. And I liked that one better.  :)
