Honestly.. it depends how we're playing. If it's a year where it's iffy as to whether or not we get six wins then yeah, I'd rather play a cupcake. If it's a year where we are going to be good and contend for better bowls then I think we should play a tougher opponent.

The Auburn games doesn't necessarily bother me, but the San Jose St. and Fresno games do.  Either player a top 20 team or play a terrible/cup cake team, don't play the in between teams.  What I enjoyed about sndyer's scheduling was that it allowed for game experience to be built throughout the depth chart.

The best time to play Auburn would be in the first game.

Now here's another question:

Would you rather play Fresno the week before Texas and take the bye week at the end of the season like we usually do? Or play Fresno at the end of the season where there's no meaning unless we're playing for the NCCG and use the bye week before the Texas game to get ready for Big XII play like we're doing?.

I'd take Auburn every year we probably aren't in the National Title hunt.

Yeah.  You don't want to risk a loss when you're gearing up for a National Title run.  Play Marshall or Fresno those years or Auburn at home.

A road OOC loss is meaningless when your ultimate realistic goal is a conference title.  Use the ESPN HD as a recruiting tool.

But then you can't brag about 9 wins. Say we go 8-4 (5-3) very 'realistic' and were one Auburn loss away from winning 9 games.

If we did  win that 9th game, we can go around bragging that KSU has won 9+ games 11 of the past 15 seasons. Which looks damned good when you recruit vs schools like ku and MU which....... (MU hasn't won 9 games since the 70's) (ku has only had 6 seasons with 8+ wins)

We haven't won 9+ games since 2003.

And I think the 9+ wins pitch is better than the "did you see us get rocked on ESPN?" pitch.

I think it's a wash, at least (the nine wins vs. ESPN).  Tie goes to the fans/prestige.

IMO every team is until they lose a game. You're in the hunt especially when you beat a top 15 team on the road and in a place like JH, than come back home for a very winnable game vs. SJSU. (Mo. State we've already won)

I'd take Auburn every year we probably aren't in the National Title hunt.

Actually, I would agree with that. I'd rather play an Auburn-type team when we essentially have nothing to lose.

We have bowl game eligibility to lose, assuming we replace with 1-a pooper.

If we can't get bowl eligible still, we don't deserve it. And if we're on the cusp again, this game will propel us into a bowl even if we lose.

If we can't get bowl eligible (i.e. win 3 or 4 Big 12 games), we wouldn't be good enough to beat Fresno anyway.

Hopefully we come out of the gate stronger than last year's first game [shudder].  For the long-term bowl success and recruiting, it's probably better to play a chump at home and get a sure win than to get beat-down at Auburn.  But there's always the chance that we play tough or win, which would go a long, long way towards putting the program back on the map.  I am optimistic enough to hope that we can do this, realistic enough that a loss won't send me into too deep a depression.

I don't care about overall team record bragging rights with the rest of the Big XII schools, head-to-head with them is all that matters.  I am hyped about this game and have been waiting for it all summer.  Never before have I been so stoked for a season opener.

If we can't get into a bowl, its because of this game.  If we are 6-6, getting into a bowl will have NOTHING to do with the Auburn game.  It will have everything to do with how many fans the bowl thinks we will bring.
