L.J. doesn't want to go to training camp. He'll be there on September 9th and that's all that matters to me. Why wouldn't you go with Huard? He was virtually flawless last season. He was 5-3 as a starter last season and threw 11 TD's and only 1 INT when Green went down.

Plays of the Day: Most noteably, T Damion McIntosh looked particularly impressive this morning in numerous battles with DE Jared Allen.
Big Stix: Former Kansas State standout and recent free agent acquisition T Damion McIntosh dealt out sturdy hits during blitz pick-ups and knocked DE Jared Allen off-balance and to the ground during a pass rush.

Rookie kicker Justin Medlock showed off his range with several long kicks. First, Medlock kicked a 57-yard field goal that hit the crossbar and bounced over. Then a 61-yarder fell short by only a couple of feet.
Medlock also tried three straight kicks from 48 yards. One was good, but another hit the right upright and bounced back and a third was wide right.
He had a strong breeze at his back for all of the attempts.
Kris Wilson, not Boomer Grigsby, was the fullback in a goal-line drill. … The fumble bug that’s hit most of the other running backs finally caught up to Michael Bennett, who put a carry on the ground. … Brodie Croyle showed his arm strength when he rolled left and threw a bullet across his body to Jeff Webb.
Rookie Tank Tyler replaced Alfonso Boone in the starting lineup. … With Ty Law and Patrick Surtain sitting out, the Chiefs used rookie free agent Tyron Brackenridge and Benny Sapp as the starting cornerbacks. Sapp has impressed the Chiefs now that he’s not playing nickel back anymore. He made a leaping interception of a Croyle pass in the back of the end zone. … Linebacker Keyaron Fox, after missing several interception chances earlier in camp, finally got one. It’s not as if he made a great play. Quarterback Casey Printers threw it right to him.

The Chiefs will travel to Mankato, Minn., for a practice against the Vikings at 6:30 tonight. The workout will conclude with a scrimmage, although Edwards said the Chiefs’ starters won’t participate. Vikings rookie running back Adrian Peterson, a former Oklahoma star, left Thursday’s practice because of what is being called a minor hip pointer and is unlikely to participate in the weekend scrimmages against the Chiefs.

Croyle worked with the first-team offense and routinely hit most of the relatively short, safe passes that now are the staple of the Chiefs more conservative offense.
Croyle hit 17 of 19 passes in seven-on-seven, gold zone offense and team drills. Few of his passes traversed more than 12 yards of field position, but none ended up in Vikings hands and he was sacked only once.
Playing with the second unit, Huard was victimized by mis-run routes and a couple sacks. He also was intercepted by former Kansas corner Charles Gordon, a Viking reserve. Veteran receiver Rod Gardner saved Huard twice with a pair of leaping receptions.
Former Kansas State linebacker Ben Leber, now with Minnesota, did not practice Friday. He has been sidelined for part of the first week of camp with a calf injury.
The teams practice again tonight, this time in River Falls, Wis.

Chiefs coach Herm Edwards cut Saturday’s scrimmage with the Vikings about 45 minutes short after a series of minor skirmishes, almost all of which involved Minnesota defensive end Ray Edwards.
Damon Huard had a much better night than Brodie Croyle as the two players battled to become the starting quarterback. Huard threw the most impressive pass of the practice, a 21-yard touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez.
Croyle struggled. He had one pass intercepted by Heath Farwell, a reserve linebacker. Farwell should have intercepted a second Croyle pass, but he dropped it instead.
On another play, Croyle had rookie wide receiver Maurice Price open, but threw a bad pass and an incompletion.
Justin Medlock made five of six field-goal attempts. He was successful from 30, 33, 36, 40 and 45 yards. His 43-yard attempt was wide left. … Kolby Smith was again impressive. He made a couple of long runs. … Wide receiver Brent Little, who grew up in Kansas City, made a leaping catch of an over-the-middle Croyle pass for a big gain.
Linebacker Keyaron Fox made an excellent play during seven-on-seven drills when he dove to break up a pass. … Linebacker Justin Phinisee intercepted a pass during the same drills. … Rookie tackle Tank Tyler worked with the first team defensive line. … Linebacker Napoleon Harris missed the workout to deal with a personal matter, Edwards said. … Backup safety Greg Wesley appeared to have a nice pass breakup but was called for interference instead.
The Chiefs have the day off and will return to practice on Monday.

The Chiefs were relieved to learn that left tackle Damion McIntosh will miss only four to six weeks because of a right knee sprain he received in Monday afternoon’s practice.
Under that timetable, McIntosh would miss the entire preseason but could be ready to play by the regular-season opener Sept. 9 in Houston. A six-week scenario would mean McIntosh sits out against the Texans and the following week’s game against the Bears in Chicago and returns Sept. 23 against Minnesota at Arrowhead Stadium.
The left-tackle spot belongs — for now — to Will Svitek, a sixth-round draft pick in 2005 who has played offensive line in just one NFL regular-season game. Svitek was a defensive lineman in college at Stanford, but he’s been nothing but an offensive tackle since joining the Chiefs.

Offensive tackle Damion McIntosh had arthroscopic surgery on his sprained right knee Thursday.
McIntosh injured the knee in practice this week and is being replaced in the starting lineup by Will Svitek.
The Chiefs haven’t said when they expect McIntosh to return, but they’re hoping he’s ready to play early in the regular season.

HCHE wanted to pick a starting QB after the second preseason game but it might take a little bit longer. Huard will start against the Dolphins and Croyle will replace him during the second quarter. Edwards would like to see both players lead sustained drives, manage the game well and not commit turnovers.
Kicker Justin Medlock once again was perfect during field-goal practice. He made kicks from 32, 34, 37 and 39 yards. … The Chiefs could only hold their tempers for so long. Offensive tackle Kyle Turley and defensive end Chris Harris engaged in one of the better fights in camp. No punches were thrown, but they shoved each other and wound up grappling on the ground before they were pried apart. … Shades of the Cleveland finish: The Croyle-led offense moved to the 1-yard line in a 2-minute drill. But the offense was penalized for a false start and since fewer than 10 seconds remained, the Chiefs shouldn’t have been able to run a play because of the 10-second runoff rule. Feeling charitable, Edwards allowed the offense one more play. Croyle fired a pass toward the corner of the end zone but it was deflected and bounced right to wide receiver Brad Ekwerekwu in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. And that play ended training camp.
Rookie Tyron Brackenridge was back as the first-team nickel back. … The Chiefs were impressed in Cleveland by reserve cornerback Dimitri Patterson. He could play himself into contention for a roster spot if he plays that well against the Dolphins.
The Chiefs will break training camp in River Falls, Wis., and return to Kansas City, where they will continue the preseason with Thursday night’s game against Miami.

What we've learned from Chiefs training camp
1. Defense will have to carry the Chiefs, at least early in the season. Between mediocre quarterback play in the preseason, Damion McIntosh’s injury, other offensive line issues and Larry Johnson’s absence, it’s obvious the Chiefs are headed for a slow offensive start.
2. The quarterback decision might not be an easy one, but it’s well-defined. Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard couldn’t be much different as players. Croyle gives the Chiefs more capability while Huard is the safer choice.
3. The Chiefs need Larry Johnson. OK, we already knew this, but camp confirmed it. Michael Bennett is a good complementary player and Kolby Smith is advanced for a fifth-round draft pick, but even together they are not capable of providing what LJ does.
4. The Chiefs should have drafted a cornerback. Better hope Ty Law and Patrick Surtain last the season. The pickings become slim quickly after they’re out.
5. Justin Medlock will be OK. It can be a rough ride with a rookie kicker, but Medlock has what it takes. He had one bad day during camp, but bounced back nicely. He had the bad preseason game against Miami but he’ll rebound from that, too.
