What part of town are you staying in?
I'd suggest you try some or all of the following-
Oklahoma Joe's (http://www.oklahomajoesbbq.com/)
Gates & Sons (http://www.gatesbbq.com/)
Arthur Bryant's (http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com/)
Jack Stack (http://ward.uat.dminsite.com/)

Ask your morgantown butt buddies.

LC's is my favorite. I'm not an Arthur Bryant's fan. Everything else is pretty good.

I've heard good things about LC's but never have gone over there to try it. What do you recommend there? Ribs, Brisket? Pork? Chackon? Let me know and i'll grab some and give it a run.
I tried to make my list the biggies that encompass all things KC BBQ. Where would LC's fit in terms of sauce base (vinegar or molasses)? Their beans & fries good too?

I don't know. I just liked it. I haven't gotten anything but beef. Sauce is sweeter than Gates. Beans are OK.

Arthur Bryant's = GBBQSOAT (greatest barbecue sauce of all time)
-
There's a mom and pop bbq place in NKC called 'smokin' guns' that is damn good.

I know people that swear by Rosedale bbq. My fav is OKlahoma Joes.

Oklahoma Joe's is the favorite of everyone living in Johnson County.
Yes, I'm serious. There isn't a single person living in Johnson County who doesn't think that crazy place in a gas station isn't the best BBQ ever. Not one.

It's pretty good, though. It doesn't have the "SOUL" of KC BBQ though. LC's, Rosedales, AB's... :lick:
Don't direct your snobbery towards those who like Oklahoma Joes - just Zarda and KC Masterpiece. :jerkoff:

I like Oklahoma Joe's, too. I don't like it as well as LC's or Gates, but I like it more than everywhere else. I just like making fun of Joco-ians. KC Masterpiece is too easy - even Joco's turn their nose up at that place - it's kind of like a music snob lambasting someone for liking Nickelback. Never eaten at Zarda.

You don't like AB's because of the sauce, right?
They do have the best fries, though. Maybe followed closely by Rosedales.

Well, the sauce and because everything tasted like nasty crap (everything everyone got, both times I've been there).

I don't think i've met anyone who thought it was nasty crap. Maybe they didn't like the sauce (it's different) but other than that, no complaints.

I make fun of people for liking "Famous Daves" even though i've eaten there before and didn't think it was terrible.

Everyone I have actually dined with hated it. Mine was "OK".

I guess I like it more than anything because it's what i'm used to, i've been going there for years. I like slipping around on the greasy floor and getting "FRIES?!??!" or "WHATCHU DRINKIN?!" yelled at me. Beef and fry or burnt ends :lick:

I live in Nebraska. You like Jim Rome & Howard Stern so you are not relevent in the conversation of what is good in any category.

Howard Stern :notworthy:

Some BBQ factoids:
I ate at Famous Daves. It really did not taste bad, as much as I wanted it to. That doesn't mean it was good or compared to KC BBQ. But it wasn't bad.
AB's still cooks their fries in lard. LOLLING @ transfat.
Zarda is beyond terrible. No further comment needed.
Ok Joe's recently upped the price of their fries from $1.75 to $3.00, now they're labeled as "The Best Fries In KC" :blahblah: too much salt imo. I hear their ribs are the best in town but haven't tried them. I usually go with a jumbo pulled pork or a zman.
Rosedale is one that I need to revisit. It's been years since I ate there and don't believe my palate had quite matured to the level of master bbq taster like it has now.
-
The LARD makes them fantastic.
OK Joes fries are not very good, IMO.
Another I forgot to mention - Haywards. IT SUCKS, but it used to be good.

If you guys want to really impress your friends with your obscure BBQ knowledge, go to Woodyard on Merriam Drive.

Can't you get brunch or breakfast there or something?

They advertise a country breakfast. Never tried it though.

Meh, I'll probably never make it out there anyway. Too many great restaurants closer to me.

I know people that swear by Rosedale bbq.
Gets my vote for tops in KC.
But avoid the half price ribs on Mondays. Better to pay full price on another day.
-
I should add that I think Gates is underrated by bbq snobs because of it's presence all across the metro. If it shared space with a dry cleaner in Riverside or something it would be more popular, IMO.
I love Gates.

I hope you die.

Topeka has "Boss Hawgs" BBQ but I stopped going there when they stopped carrying red cream soda.
-
Gate's Hotsauce tastes like Hot celery to me. Or is it Bryant's?
-
It's Gates.
ABs has good sauce, but they use dog food quality meats.
-

Gates Hot is loaded with celery "seed"
-
Gates celery is delish!!
-
That's the great thing about bbq and sauces, there is something for everyone! Even tards that like celery and snobs that mock(?) joco snobs!
Hickory for me on ribs, apple on most everything else. Can't stand Cherry.
Harsh words edited.

Lots of people, I guess I just lumped you in people I knew from my ksu days.

You shouldn't lump people together like that.

I tend to do that, before I went to ksu I thought topeka was western ks.

What part of town are you staying in?
I'd suggest you try some or all of the following-
Im actualy gonna be in Blue Springs. From what someone told me and what people are saying here, Arthur Bryants sounds like the place.

Compare it's level of badass to an apartment. What would an apartment of the same badassness have?
ps. Don't get mad Koug :D

Hmm...let's ask the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/06/arts/design/06nels.html?_r=1&ref=arts&oref=slogin
The waiting is over. Mr. Holl’s breathtaking addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, opening here on June 9, is his most mature work to date, a perfect synthesis of ideas that he has been refining for more than a decade. By subtly interweaving his building with the museum’s historic fabric and the surrounding landscape, he has produced a work of haunting power.
I'm pretty sure that means badass. ;)

Except which burnt ends? I don't think I've had bad burnt ends from anywhere.
