What did you thin of it?

We should get into deep, intelligent thought. So profound that mere muggles (haha), like PC and Ew (you're out of the group, btw), cannot grasp the enthralling words that we speak of.

You guys lost me at "Harry Potter"...I've never read one of his books nor have I seen any of his movies.  I really know nothing about him or his crew.

Easily the best book, tied everything together from the entire series.  Very sad to see it end.  She didn't leave it open for any more books.

I'm sad that there never was a vivid love scene between Hermione and Ron. I can imagine now, how much money someone would make off of a porn spoof on that book.

You just don't possess the intelligence that it takes to understand what J.K. is trying to say to her readers. The woman is a genius, really. If you don't believe me then just look at the 10 million dollar checks she's getting.

There's a difference between earning your money and having it given to her. Mr. Hilton is a pretty smart man.

J.K. Rowling (or whatever self-made millionaire you decide upon) makes her millions because she's talented and she works hard. Paris Hilton makes her millions because she was born. That's it. If her father wasn't who he is, nobody would give two craps about her.

not disagreeing, only the point that you were saying "look how much money she is making to prove she was a genius" . Very few people who earn lots of money fall into that genius category.  See - Michael Vick, Mike Tyson, Tom Cruise, Paris, etc...   do we have a picture drawing emoticon?  :photoshop:

Actually she did.  I just finished it a few minutes ago.

Go re-read the last part with Harry talking to Albus Severus and him checking his scar one more time.  Now tell me that isn't an opening for another dark lord.

I don't want her to write another one. It would turn into a Land Before Time-like series then and nobody would care eventually.

And what does it say about his scar right after that? No, the Harry Potter series is done. However, there would probably be great demand for a James Potter "prequel" series, so to speak, focusing on James, Sirius, Lupin, Lily, Snape, etc. I wouldn't like it if she did that, but it would probably be a hit as well.

Rowling is an excellent writer, no question.

Or she could write a series about Harry's kid. I don't think she will write anymore Harry Potter books. I could see her coming out with a different story completely unrelated to Harry Potter though. Not that she would need to, she's a billionaire (corrected from my earlier statement of her being a measly millionaire).

Very true, which would also be a guaranteed hit. I could see her writing a similar fantasy-type series unrelated...I don't think the money matters much at this point, if she truly loves writing. Although, trying to live up to the phenomenon that is Harry Potter might take the fun out of it.

Side note: despite the reasoning behind it, despite being named for one of the greatest wizards of all time, how pissed is Albus about his name? Couple that with the middle name Severus, and that's going to be one troubled child.

Dude. Celebrities always name their kids screwed up names. How about "Apple" or "Blanket." I would kick my parents asses, but then they would just throw me some millions and I'd be all right.

So let's see though.. They named their kids after James, Lilly, Albus, Severus, Remus, Aberforth (I think).. Was there a Tonks or maybe even a Mad-eye? Or it would have been really great if there was a Dobby. There was also a Fred I believe.

Tonks was the last name of Nymphadora.  Mad-eye is just a nick name, his real name is Allister (IIRC).

I know his real name is Allister. I just thought it would be cool if they named one of their kids Mad-Eye. I knew Tonks was the last name, just didn't know what her first name was. Were any of the kids named after her?

I finished it yesterday afternoon.   :beerchug:
What did you thin of it?

We should get into deep, intelligent thought. So profound that mere muggles (haha), like PC and Ew (you're out of the group, btw), cannot grasp the enthralling words that we speak of.
Easily the best book, tied everything together from the entire series.  Very sad to see it end.  She didn't leave it open for any more books.

Actually she did.  I just finished it a few minutes ago.

Go re-read the last part with Harry talking to Albus Severus and him checking his scar one more time.  Now tell me that isn't an opening for another dark lord.

QFT Kougs.

Maybe if she's looking for inspiration you could let her stay in your "badass apartment" in Olathe.*

I think maybe middle names of James or Lilly. Or of the Weasley's kids. I'm not 100% though.

Probably an auror or someone in the Ministry Of Magic.

Auror would be the obvious choice, but Harry's got no love for the Ministry...at least, he didn't as a kid. That had to have left a bad taste in his mouth. Plus, for someone who has "had enough trouble for a lifetime" (his words) I can't see him chasing dark wizards for a living. Did any of the books ever say what his dad did for a living? Or mom?

I watched Dateline NBC last weekend and it was a feature about Harry Potter and an interview of JK Rowling. She said that both Harry and Ron were Aurors, and totally revamped the auror department within the MoM (Ministry of Magic).  Hermoine works in the Magical Law department.

Both of his parents were aurors that were trying to stop Voldemort (that's why Voldemort went after James). In book six (I believe) when Harry was taking his OWLs he talked about how he had to do well if he became an auror. Plus, the ministry would be completely different since the Dark Lord was down. Being an auror was probably pretty easy then because I doubt many wizards wanted to go up against the Boy Who Lived anymore.. I sure wouldn't, anyway.

Both his parents were in the Order, but that doesn't necessarily make them Aurors. Also, Voldy went after the Potter family because of the prophecy, not because of James' profession.

No. They were both aurors, I'm sure.

FWIW. (http://www.redhen-publications.com/PottersProfession.html)

"...It used to be a broadly popular belief throughout much of fandom that James Potter, and possibly Lily as well, like Frank and Alice Longbottom, were employed as Aurors at the time of their deaths at the end of October, 1981.

Post-OotP, however, we seemed to have discovered that this was unlikely to have been the case. There simply did not appear to be enough time for James and Lily to have finished their training and become established as Aurors between the time they finished Hogwarts and the time that they were killed."

The article goes on to speculate other reasons the Potters might have been Aurors, as well, so I'm not saying you're wrong, Waks. Basically, all I look at this proving is that Rowling never mentioned James' or Lily's profession explicitly, so it's up to you, the reader, to guess.

No, not pertaining to if it's appropriate or not. I don't know if elementary school kids really understand the concept of homosexuality or not.

I'm pretty sure that they are. It's extremely popular in all age groups, yes, but I'm going to guess that the book was originally written for kids in elementary school. Correct me if I'm wrong but adults don't usually read fantasy books about witches and wizards, do they?

And children read books that literally center on 'death' as the overlying theme? It has witches and wizards, yes, but its dark across the board. I know tons of adults that read Harry Potter books and no one at all below 18 reading it. They're adult fantasy books. Kids can read them but the complexity and dark tone screams for adult target material.

I think the first few books were written for the elementary school crowd, but as a fifth grade teacher, I have to say that even my most mature, intelligent student would have a hard time following the last 3 books.

I don't think it is a big deal that she announced Dumbledore (a.k.a. "The Magical Fruit") as gay.  I think she has entire histories, likes, dislikes, biographical timelines, etc. in her mind for each character as she writes the books, and really none of the adult characters have any sort of love life that is discussed.  I did think that Dumbledore was getting it on with McGonagall, though. :cyclist:

I agree, that the last three or four books would be much more difficult for kids to read but the first three were pretty elementary. Most adults weren't reading them at first and the hype didn't rise so much to where everybody was reading them until book 4 or 5.
