So word on the street is that Murphy is having some trouble getting this final class out of the way and is snooping around some DII schools. Anyone got any information on this topic, because if it's true, that's a killer! :crybaby:
-
He's the only JUCO player that we have left to worry about because checking with my source, Abana is going to make it by the 31st.
Let's look at the WR's without Murphy:
Nelson
Brown
Hogan
Wilson
Gonzalez
Pierce
Definately lacking the playmaking abililty, except for Nelson & Lamark. (I'm talking out of my arse on Lamark since he hasn't even played a down at WR.") Jury is out on Pierce & Hogan also. Definately would help if Deon made it, adding some more speed/experience.
I'll take the wait and see approach for the WR's.....

Hogan has playmaker written all over him. Every other time he touched the ball in high school he went the distance. You've seen his video. Definitely a playmaker.

Oh yes, I have. And trust me I'm the biggest Hogan homer you'll find. And I also know that he has the ability to be the other starting WR opposite of Jordy. But I dont know if he'll be directly ready for D-1 football right at the beginning of the season. That's why I'm going to take the wait and see appoach. Also, in his HS football highlight vid he was playing against dallas area talent. Some people seem to forget the talent that Danny was going up against on defense.

Yep, I've never gotten over the PR TD or the one handed catch that went for the TD since I saw the highlight vid on insidekstatesports.....
Simply amazing...

I'm not really expecting Murphy (if he shows) to bolster our receving corps too much. I'm more interested in his punt/kick return abilities. Anyone that fast can really add new dimensions to special teams.

QFT I really want this guy back there.

What, you don't like having to use our only 2 legit RBs as kick returners?

Ha, you are assuming Patton is back :crybaby:

IMO, we have a ton of options for KR, Hogan, Patton, Mckinney, Johnson,
-
IMO, we have a ton of options for KR, Hogan, Patton, Mckinney, Johnson,
I wouldn't call that a ton of options and here is why I have a problem with that list:
Hogan-Freshman
Patton-Can't afford to have him hurt
McKinney-Will probably average 1 personal foul a game even as a KR
Johnson-See Patton
-
Do we know if Lamark has any hands whatsoever?
The ONLY freshman who have ever made big impacts for us at WR have had great hands...which are Kevin and Aaron Lockett.
-
MicKinney is the slowest returner in the league. My grandma could have rolled herself to the endzone before McKinney on his one good return. He is NOT a good option at returner OR CB.

I was actually trying to come up with more as my boss walked into the room; I thought I closed it but apparently I posted it before doing so.
Any player can get hurt doing anything. Afraid of getting hurt is not a good enough of an excuse for not playing special teams; So I Disagree with not wanting to use Johnson or Patton; I wouldn't use both, but one will do. Hogan -- Maybe not Week 1; but why not as a freshman; Patton did pretty decent last year. I'll agree with Mckinney though; Not a great option, but an option none the less.
I'd also like to add (unless they're not gonna make it here and I haven't heard about it yet)
Dee Bell
Justin Woods
and Ernie Pierce.
6-7 choices isn't bad imo.

Probably not. Only your savior could ever correctly identify talents like the Locketts. Lamark will be a bust, I'm sure.

You're just throwing out names without any evidence they would be viable options.
The two best options on the team are Patton and Johnson. And neither returned a punt last year.
The best option from the incoming class, based on prior performance, is Deon Murphy.
That's why him not appearing weakens those options. Pierce, Hogan and Woods all have proven some level of return ability, but it would certainly seem that Murphy was the more highly regarded for ST play.

No, I'm throwing out names of people that either has proven ability returning kicks at a Juco or High school level or they were recruited for their speed. Suggesting that they shouldn't be looked at as an option is asinine. I'm not suggesting they all be used; but surely there's one extra guy out of that group of 5 that can contribute; match that guy up with either Patton or Johnson, and you have a your kick return guys; Have a McKinney in there as a 3rd option for depth.
-
I don't think anybody was suggesting there was a lack of warm bodies.
What folks are suggesting is that of the incoming class Murphy looked to be the best option to jump into the mix as a kick returner.
If he doesn't make it, we have fewer options.
Is this so hard to understand?

No I understand it, just not that worried about it.
-
Since we obviously don't recruit on star, what do we recruit on? Speed. Murphy might have been quick, and might have been who was going to return kicks, but I'm sure we've got lots of quick people who can return. Patton or Johnson could do it too.
-
Don't forget Josh Moore. He returned punts during the spring game.

P.S.
you in particular were suggesting that Johnson and Patton were the only options. I provided 4 other guys that could just as much be a possibility as Murphy was/is. So get off my ass. :billypopcorn:
-
That's where we differ. To me, I see a significant drop off after Patton/Johnson among the guys on our team.
And when I look at the incoming recruits, Murphy stood out above the others as a an option.
If you think those 4 others are just as legit options as Patton/Johnson or Murphy then you're entitled to that opinion, but I disagree.
Do you understand now?
-
I do think that Hogan and Pierce could have just as probable of an impact in the return game as Murphy... I never compared any incoming guy to Johnson or Patton, I merely stated they were viable options based off of the video's that everyone saw on insidekstatesports.com. If there's other FREE video out there that suggest otherwise, I'd love to watch them. FWIW though, I think you're wrong and a stubborn jackass trying to sound all high and mighty.
And you're condesending "do you understand now" really make me laugh at you.
-
You were struggling, and I tried to help out.
You do realize that Pierce had 6 return attempts, don't you?
That's pretty solid reasoning on your part.
I never compared any incoming guy to Johnson or Patton
Well, that's just plain stupid of you. What's the point of the conversation if we're not looking for guys that can beat out or be at least close to the incumbent players?
-
Hogan had a beautiful return on his video.
-
After Murphy, I'd love to see Hogan get the opportunities.
Especially on PR.

You are a &*$@!ing idiot arent' you. :billypopcorn:
List where I said any of these guys were better than anyone. Murphy would have been great. I would have loved to have him. But Pierce and Hogan are viable options. Wikipedia "viable options" if you are having trouble understanding what I'm talking about.
You do know that Pierce had 2 punt returns for TD's... Don't you? And Hogan's video made everyone a believer.
Still waiting on you to "get it"
-
What point does it make if they're viable options if they're not as good as the guys that have the job now?
You're really, really, really slow to understanding this.
I'm not going to get pumped up about a guy that has 6 return attempts, regardless of how well they went.
I'll ask you now. Do you think any of the incoming guys could be good enough to free up Johnson or Patton from return duty?
You'll notice that this has been my point all along, so if you're not arguing that, you really shouldn't be arguing with me.
-
If you would pay attention to what I've been saying you would see that I was not worried about Murphy not being able to make it because I believe that there are other options JUST AS GOOD AS MURPHY. Johnson and Patton really don't come into the equation until you are worried about one of them getting injured. If you're only argument is to have the two best guys back there and this topic is about Murphy being back there, then apparently you believe that Murphy is better than Johnson or Patton. Expecting a JUCO player to be a better option than two proven Big 12 Players only further illustrates your ignorance.
Now slow down and read this very slowly: The statement I've been making all along is that Pierce and Hogan are just as good of options to compliment Johnson or Patton than Murphy was. Johnson and Patton have nothing to do with Pierce, Hogan, and Murphy being Viable Options.
So to answer your question: "What point does it make if they're viable options if they're not as good as the guys that have the job now?"
What point does it make if Murphy is a viable option if they're not as good as the guys that have the job now? See where I'm going with this. If an unproven murphy was someone that you wanted to unseat Johnson or Patton, than the other guys should be a viable option as they are just as unproven as Murphy. So me answering that stupid as question is just as stupid as you suggesting that we're up crap creek now that Murphy can't shore up Patton or Johson kick returns.
Look, I don't think your are really this stupid. You're just arguing for the sake of arguing. And the point you're trying to make makes sense to me, but you're failing to see that I"m not worried about not getting Murphy because Hogan and Pierce may turn out to be just as good as Murphy. If you don't want both of your RB's returning kicks, which is something that I never suggested, and I don't want either, then you need a 3rd option in there: Hogan and Pierce are great options for that guy, with atleast two other options behind them.
Proven kick returners in the Big 12 = x
Unproven players with the liklihood to succed with Kick returns = y
x+y= Good kick returns
x = Johnson or Patton
y = (murphy), hogan, pierce, woods, or bell. In that order.
-
What do you guys think about Josh Moore returning punts. He did it this spring. Do you think he could have the same impact that newman had?
-

Please let me know how many punt returns Johnson and Patton have in 2006.
Pierce has 6 at the JC level.
Hogan is pretty experienced at a HS level, but we're going off 1 return on video.
Murphy has not only the greater experience at the JC level, he also has more production. The other incoming players aren't even close when it comes to combined experience and production. That's the simple fact that you ignore, and substitute it with raves about a grand total of three plays (one for Hogan's video, and 2 from Pierce).
Look at your last sentence, it is EXACTLY my point. Murphy is/was the best incoming option.
-
Murphy would have been great. I would have loved to have him. But Pierce and Hogan are viable options.
But it's still JUCO. Patton and Johnson are better options at this point. I don't care what you say.
-
Look, It's a loss, only an idiot would say it isn't. But It's not that bad because we have several guys that can fill those shoes. If he had been a DT, this would have been worth melting down over. But it's not.
I'm done. Any response from you here after will be ignored.
-

Johnson had two, count 'em TWO, returns last year.
If two plays, one of which is a great one, is all it takes to be proven at a position in NCAA D1A....
For that matter Patton only had 10 returns on the year. There were 66 returns last year, and our two top guys (the proven ones) accounted for 18% of them.
That's yet another reason why I want Murphy.
