Title: KSU in top five for Biosecurity facility
Post by: Pike on July 22, 2007, 11:43:23 PM
We can't recruit in basketball or football but at least we've got this going for us

The other four schools in the top five are Texas, North Carolina, Mississippi and Georgia

So yeah another opportunity to pwn Texas

I have a friend who's a relatively new professor here at K-State.  He was brought in specifically to work at the Bio-Security Facility as well as teaching course on international terrorism.  Interesting fact:  we brought him here from OU so yes... we are winning the recruiting war as far as teachers who deal in anti-terrorism!

We won't get it, unfortunately.  :frown:

This is also pretty old news, fwiw.

I think there is a really good shot that we will get it.

A) They can use Pat Roberts Hall immediately and then move into the new center. Therefore the don't have to put off the deal until its built. Communication between here and the PRH will be key.
B) Biosecurity issues are huge in this region. When you have some counties in your state with over a $1/4 billion worth of cattle on feed, its import to be close in proximity to these areas are important.
C) We are the only major Ag. university out of that list.

You forgot that..

1. We're two hours away from a major airport and twenty miles from an intrastate.
2. Bush is from Texas, this helps the Texas site enormously.
3. If it doesn't go to Texas, the Raleigh location is incredible because it would be in the RDU Triangular Research Park.

K-State doesn't stand a chance unless Sebelius/Roberts have something up their sleeves.

Isn't being out in the middle of bum &@#%ing nowhere a huge advantage for this sort of thing?

Apparently not. It causes problems with the transportation of samples and what not. That's what I've been told anyway..

Bush has nothing to do with it. Congress decides where this goes.

Have you not been watching for the past seven years? Congress does what Bush wants Congress to do.

While that would have been true prior to Nov. 06, the Democrats took over and don't seem to follow lock step with das fuhrer nearly as much.

I don't think it's Congress's call on this though. I believe it's all up to the Dept. of Homeland Security or one of those puppets that Bush uses. Seriously, K-State won't be getting it.

Pat Roberts has huge pull in this area, dude.  Glass half full.  Glass half full.  I'm guessing that we've got a 50-60% chance.  I'm also guessing that they'd like to avoid putting a bunch of dangerous bioagents near a somwhat large urban area (Raleigh/Durham/UNC).  Rizlizzax, B.

I'm being overly negative on purpose. Kansas is the only state that has put together a committee in charge of trying to get this thing which is brilliant because it will bring something like 5 billion dollars to the state in 20 years (I'm not sure on the time frame). We're obviously appealing because of the food health corridor between here and Olathe. I think it will be between us and RDU.

Sebelius, as a 2 term Democrat governor in a red state, should be able to bring some weight to bear as well.  She should be on the phone to whichever Dim is running the committee and tell them to give her the victory.

LOL.. the Mercury had an article about it quoting Wefald comparing getting this facility to being in the Final Four and winning a national championship in basketball.

He wouldn't know what it was like to get a Biosecurity facility either but I'm sure one can imagine enough to make the analogy.

Kansas has the tools, the staff and desire to win the championships, and Wefald and others say other big time recruits, comparable to the NBAF project, will be forthcoming. He called it "the biggest thing to happen in Kansas since the Civil War."

I'm pretty sure that he meant to say "since Brown v. Topeka Board of Education."  Yeah...he definitely meant to say that.

I'd like to know a little more about what this lab will really do.  It's almost certainly going to be very controversial with animal rights groups (PETA will probably put in a satellite office in Manhattan) given that much of the work will (apparently) involve experiments on livestock.  I'd like to know whether the animal-based experiments will be heinous or extremely controversial (if they ever see the light of day, that is).  Rumor has it that the lab was formerly involved with offensive bio-terrorism in the days of the cold war.  My understanding is that most of the problems associated with the Plum Island facility were due to poor management and aging facilities.  I'd like to believe that the Manhattan site (if it comes to fruition) could maintain great management through close oversight (both internally and through the dept of homeland security).  I don't know what to believe, so I'd really like to see a relatively unbiased account of this lab and its expected impacts and/or risks.  I'm highly skeptical of a number of things that our government does in the name of anti-terrorism, but anti-bioterrorism is one thing that I think is really worth a significant investment.

It's pretty encouraging to me to see that major metropolitan areas were included in the original list of potential sites - Lawrence Livermore in the bay area, Madison, WI, and Boston come to mind.  That, at least, leads me to believe that the risks associated with the facility are most likely less scary than some of the alarmists (I hope it's fair to call the people jumping to conclusions about the facility's past transgressions alarmists) make them out to be.  It doesn't seem like they're just saying, "Oh, hell!  Why'd we put this thing near New York City?!"  Inadequate facilities seem to be the main problem.

Wouldn't having Fort Riley nearby be considered a positive?
