LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska wide receiver Maurice Purify pleaded no contest to four charges Wednesday as part of a deal with prosecutors. He awaits word from coach Bill Callahan about disciplinary action.
A Lancaster County judge sentenced him to a year of probation and fined him $1,250.
Purify was found guilty of driving while intoxicated, assault, disturbing the peace and hindering arrest. The charges stem from two incidents earlier this year.
While on probation, Purify won't be allowed to enter a bar or any business that primarily sells alcohol, and he must attend drug and alcohol counseling. For 60 days, Purify will have the choice of not driving or having a device attached to his car ignition that will ensure he is sober before he can start the vehicle.
A spokesman for Callahan said the coach had no comment but would address the issue in the next few days. Purify was suspended indefinitely from the team last month.
"I do not know if I will be fortunate enough to play another game at Nebraska," Purify said in a statement. "I hope that I can be afforded a second chance to do what I love to do — play football for Nebraska."
Purify led the Cornhuskers in receiving yards last season, with 34 catches for 630 yards and seven touchdowns.

Purify was arrested May 5 and charged on several counts, including two for assault, after an altercation at a Lincoln bar. Last month he was cited on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
As part of the agreement with prosecutors, one of the assault charges and a charge of refusing to obey a police order were dropped. Also, a trespassing charge was reduced to disturbing the peace.
Purify apologized in his statement to family, friends, teammates and Callahan.
Purify's attorney, Jon Braaten, said the plea deal was appropriate.
"It's the exact same sentence anyone else would get in this circumstance," Braaten said.
Purify played at City College of San Francisco before joining Nebraska.

Yep. I work in the court building and today when looking for the name of one of probation client's, I saw Purify's name on the court sheet. Spoke with my buddy, who is a member of the LPD, he stated the plea is pretty normal and the punishment is about par for the course on most offenders. Now should he be able to play, that's another story in itself.
-
Why wouldn't or shouldn't he be able to play? A couple of misdemeanors that nearly every college kid in America will get or has gotten at some point. I've said all along it will be 2 games. And that's exactly what Callahan will do.
-
I'd be embarrassing if callahan lets him play this year.
we shall see....

I not saying he should or shouldn't be able to play. Whatever Bill C's comes up with, no one will be happy with. If he lets him back, people will say he just wants to win at all costs. If he doesn't then NU fans will say he is heartless and should give him another shot. I would really hate to be in Billy C's shoes right now. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Whether people think so or not, Purify is an impact player. And he just put his coach in a real bad spot.

I wouldn't be embarrassed, but the NU fans will definitely have to survive the storm of "that's Nebraska, win at all costs". But I think I could handle it. Besides, it's not me making the decision. ;)

Read this post maxel,
Exactly why this is a big deal. It's a big deal because he not only put his coach in a real bad spot, but he put every fan of NU and the image of the college in a real bad spot. If I were a nub, I'd be calling for his head.

Christ, he got in a freakin bar fight and a DUI. Should we send him to the gallos next? If its a felony, I'm all in favor of removing a kid from a team. Its not. He'll play and other teams will have to deal with it. I don't give a crap and I don't think Callahan does either.

We'll see what happens. I'll wait until Cally makes his final decision before I start celebrating. But to say Callahan doesn't give a crap, that's just naive.
-
He doesn't give a crap what anyone else thinks. He'll operate independently of what KSU, Missouri, Nebraska and the media thinks he should do. He will not let a turd ass KSU fan make his decision for him.
-
"turd ass" -- cousin of "booger nose" and "phlegm-ball throat"
-
Fatty, I am interested in why you think a bar fight and a DUI is bad enough to take a kid's entire SR year away from him. Is it for NU's sake or for KSU's?
-
Christ, he got in a freakin bar fight and a DUI.
Ya, you're right. Drunk driving is not a big deal. Tell that to the mother of my friend who died because some guy decided to get behind the wheel after having a few beers.
Nebraska fans are unbelievable.

Unreal, isn't it?
Makes you sick to you stomach.
God Bless Kansas State University for being above this. Hell, our best RB isn't averaging a 3.0, so Prince f-ing suspends him.
Thus, the difference between Callahan and Prince. Sad.

DUI's are very serious. Do you think a DUI is enough to lose an entire year though?

Every player that has gotten into serious trouble since Callahan has been there has been kicked off. He still hasn't even made his decision yet, so relax. Man, to think.... if every person while I was in the military got kicked out of the military for a DUI and a bar fight, then only me and a third of the rest of the military would be left.

:curse:
Nebraska Punishment Guide
• rape = run stairs
• grand theft auto = 1 quarter
• child molestation = 1 game as long as its not a BCS opponent
• DUI = 2 games tops (see above)
• murder = suspended for non-conference play
-
DUI's are very serious. Do you think a DUI is enough to lose an entire year though?
So he would have had to kill some one before he gets suspended for a year? Seriously, tell me what you think deserves a one year suspension.

I don't know, that's why I asked you first. You seem to have very strong feelings about this, so I wanted to see what you thought was fair.

Um....Snyder himself let a player play without any suspension after getting a DUI..............no suspension. KSU is above nothing.
DUI's are very serious but they happen, and an EXREME number of people get them (i'd suspect that many who post on here have one or more), it's a bad mistake to drive while drunk, but not one worthy of being kicked off a team. People, and especially kids, make mistakes. Callahan, just like SNYDER wouldn't, won't kick him off the team. He'll atleast suspend him though unlike snyder would.
Wow. Thank god we have laws and that justice isn't handed out by vigilante's.
-
Bill Snyder smack? Last time I checked, the man has retired and hasn't coached us in over 20 months.
Good stuff, can I whip out my 38-9 smack if you chooses to bring that crap?
3 kilograms of "lol" there, imo.
-
bar fight = not a HUGE issue
DUI = serious, but doesn't warrant year long suspension
both within a month? That shows that player wasn't too worried about whatever punishment he was going to get for the first and basically thumbed his nose at the coach by doing whatever he wanted (driving drunk). What message does is send to other players if Purify still plays? "Do whatever you want as long as it's not a felony and it's cool."
-
It was a DUI. Will he get kicked off? Probably not. Will other fans be up in arms? More then likely. But we have all seen stranger things in college football, then allowing a player to plat after receiving a DUI. DUI's are serious, no one was hurt, thank god. Will the kid learn his lesson? Who knows. But before everyone goes crazy about this court hearing, why don't we relax and see what the coach says before getting out our jump to conclusions mat.

It's going to be totally embarassing for NU when Purify walks onto the field in uniform on national tv for the USC game. :blahblah:

Just a comparison. Snyder didn't kick off a Wildcat after getting a DUI, and actually played him the next game. I don't think wildcat nation was up in arms about this acting as if it was a tragedy. I don't think Snyder was wrong in not kicking a player off for making a misdemeanor mistake like a dui, and neither will Callahan be. That's my point. I doubt Prince would kick off a player in Purify's shoes and I would NOT be angry at him not kicking him off. I'd think it were the right thing. EDUCATING, and IMPROVING these men are the primary thing universities are supposed to do.
As Wildcat fans, are you mad at Snyder for playing that kid who got a DUI? Your team benefited from him playing. Was that wrong? I personally don't think it was.
-
I hope Callahan lets him back.
Suspend him for a couple games or something but I don't see this as a reason to throw the kid's senior season/future down the tubes.

Let's stay in the present.

I'm just waiting for you to answer the question that I originally asked you. I'm saying I DON'T KNOW what a fair punishment for DUI would be, and since you seem to be very passionate about this issue I was interested in your opinion.
-
I doubt Prince would kick off a player in Purify's shoes and I would NOT be angry at him not kicking him off.

That's crap. For multiple reasons. Prince wouldn't throw a kid under the bus like that. Kicking off a player for these things is WRONG.
-

I can't argue with that. Risking an innocent person's life isn't worth taking someone's senior year of football away.
You Nebraska fans need to seriously wake up to reality.

Not necessarily. The proximity of these charges to each other leaves Purify open to anything.

I completely believe it wrong to kick off any player who is in Purify's shoes. Any team, any player. People freaking make mistakes. ESPECIALLY KIDS.

Correct, people do make "mistakes" and mistakes have consequences. In this case anything from a 1 game to season long suspension is on the table as an option. Purify understands this, demonstrated by the fact that in his apology he didn't know if he would be allowed back.

You're being illogical. I never said that he didn't deserve punishment; but using your logic Callahan should ruin Purify's life because he could have ruined someone else's. I don't agree with that.
I don't remember your anti-drunk driving rhetoric last basketball season... :frown:

Right on, i'd just disagree with Prince there. Discipline does has a purpose. I think it's fair to say in general that a random person in purify's shoes has the ability to change his ways and avoid such mistakes in the future by learning from his consequences and by seeing that he was wrong. I think a consequence as harsh as kicking the player off a team for something like this is bad discipline, if your goal of discipline is to bring beneficial change to the player.
Now, I don't believe a player should ever be given indefinite chances.

pissclams you have been a consistent voice of reason about this from day one. We try to teach our players how not to do bad things so they won't get this way in the first place.
Just a thought.

Didn't KSU athletics develop a stricter policy about this type of stuff? A serious accident happened last semester with a girl in the rowing program. It was related to people country cruising (she wasn't the driver).
Seriously, at UNL they have a SafeRide program that runs 7 nights a week, from 7 pm to 7 am. Is it too much for him to call and get a ride?

ok it won't ruin his life. it would have a greater impact on it than what he deserves though.

If you want to relive the glory days of LP and the Warden you just have to substitute Osborne for Callahan, Phillips for Purify and throw Scott Frost into the mix somewhere.

I don't know how accurate that article is, but we will see. I hate when all I hear is the word assault. Does that mean a push, a punch or spitting on somebody? they use that word to describe a million different things. if it was a fist then he might not be around. Callahan is a very strict coach. ifr he is allowed to stay then I doubt it's as bad as they are saying in the article. Either way, I bet he misses atleast the first game of the year, maybe more

UNL does have this program, but it's only is available for the regular school year. They don't offer it during the summer semesters.

FTR, if anyone cares; I don't think he should lose the entire season. Anyone saying that probably isn't being serious.
My opinion of how his actions should be punished:
1 game for the assault
2 games for the DUI
and an extra game for being such a dumbass to do them both within a month of eachother.
4 games. Back in time for conferance play and it sets an example that the program won't tolerate behavior like this.

Murphy got 4 games because he let someone buy him a used junker.

Clayton got 1 game for driving off while someone was trying to give him a parking ticket. Didn't punch a girl or anything!

Only Cornhole fans: When they have thugs, it's no big deal. Somebody else on another team gets into a little trouble, and the sanctimonious Cornhole nation pisses their pants if the kid ever sees the field again.
Kid de-commits from NU to some other school, they piss and moan about honoring commitments . . . another kid de-commits from a school for NU, that kid saw the light.
-
what if purify was just a regular student? would you kick him out of college, susopend him from class? If your a judge and you get a dui do you lose your job? what if your a famous actor, do you still get to act in movies? seems to me, ksu fans want purify more harshly penalized than anyopne else is for the same crime, god, I wonder why.
and yes, it's to bad that some people get drunk, drive and kill people. However last time I checked this is america and you get get punished for the crime you commit, not the crime you could have commited or some others have commited.
anyone who wants to call cally a win at all cost coach or whatever should really look at his history. Countless starters at NU have been kicked off the team, guys we really could have used, atleast one of them, more crucial to the team then purify is this year.
and by the way. your rb wasn't suspended for not getting a 3.0, that is stupid, can't believe somebody believes it. he was suspended because he is damn near flunking out of college and really screwed up over the summer in his summer classes.

Honestly, it's all prince's fault. He basically forced Leon to take Differential Equations, while Patton was already taking 17 hours. Patton eventually reigned, and he got a C. Thus, his GPA is a shade below 3.0.
F-ing Prince. But he gotta love the discipline he preaches. :)
If only other big 12 coaches did similar....

Are you serious?! I heard he made Matt Boss take Human Body even though he's a Finance major so that is why he left the team. Prince of course called him a &@#%ing pussy because Boss couldn't handle the course load.

what if purify was just a regular student? would you kick him out of college, susopend him from class?
Well, I just bookmarked this for future use. If any corn fan EVER states one of our players is trouble I have this to fall back on and they can't say anything. Gracias retard.

Clayton got 1 game for driving off while someone was trying to give him a parking ticket. Didn't punch a girl or anything!
Actually Clayton got two games. One in 2005, the year of the incident LSnyder made him sit out a week. Afterwards, Prince made him sit out the home opener for 2006 to set an example.

I believe Clayton actually had pre AND post conviction suspensions.

Yeah, I remember now. He was leading the nation in rushing when suspended the first time. He then pled to a very minor offense and got suspended a second game. Didn't touch anyone, was sober, didn't punch a girl in the face, didn't get arrested twice in a month and still got two games.

He'll play against USC.
The end.

.... If your a judge and you get a dui do you lose your job?
I don't know about those other assholes, but I have several co-workers that jobs are required to have a clean driver's liscense and would lose their jobs if they got a DUI. And no dick head, I don't deliver pizza's or something like that. Douche.

If I plead guilty to assault I would most defiantely lose my job. DUI is about a 50/50.

Driving under the influence is a crime you dumbass. It's not like it's not a crime unless you kill someone. Every time you get behind the wheel with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, it is a crime; a crime that anyone should be punished for. The fact that you're even questioning this makes any opinion you have in the future completely irrelevant.
Seriously, that's like saying I killed a homeless guy; but It's okay because 1. I didn't get caught and 2. It was just a homeless guy that no one cared about.
We should make T-shirts that read: "Help the economy, Kill a homeless person." Copywritten by FBWillie

The truth is in the middle here. A lot of what is being said about Purify is really over-the-top and ridiculous. He's not a bad guy. However he has done some bad things and he obviously he some issues with alcohol.
I hope that he gets his life together, and stays out of trouble. However, I admit I am still worried about him doing something again, so I hope that Callahan doesn't tell him he can come back for sure after missing a few games...I hope Callahan tells him that if he stays out of trouble until the season starts only THEN will his current suspension end and a new suspension from games begin.

Punching a girl is also a crime. It shouldn't be sometimes, but it is...

He's not a bad guy.
False. I don't know how much contact you have had with him or if you are connected to the university or not but he most certainly is a "bad guy".

I would like to see you print these pictures and give them to Marlon and Purify face to face.

Are you suggesting they're violent criminals?

Are you suggesting they're violent criminals?
I think we are beyond suggestions at this point. We have one convicted of assault and the other a confirmed OD on drugs trying to off himself because he's a f***ing moron. What is left to suggest?
EDIT: Also, Marlon wouldn't get upset about his because he can't read hth

That fifth choice Slashahan is a win at all costs pile of scum.

I've worked with a lot of depressed people who tried to commit suicide, and they come from all walks of life. You usually don't seem like too bad of a guy, but that was a pretty disgusting thing to say.
-
I'm hearing that Purify got 1 game. I've got to admit that seems really lenient.
-
there is a thread on anotehr ksu board that has dui, first offense sentencing guidlines from otehr states and it doesn't appear to be a very seriously penalized crime the first time around. looks like you get your licene yanked, pay a fat ticket, maybe take some classes, maybe do some community service bot nothing really serous.
and yes, I do know it's a crime but, like i said earlier, you only do the time for what you did, not what you didn't do. is mo supposed to go to prison because somebody else in another town got drunk and killed somebody. yeah, thats fair
-
Excuse me for skipping to the end and not reading the whole thread. I may be repeating what others have said.
As I see it no one really blames "Mo" (the "skers" gotta shorten everything) for the punishment from Cally. He got a 1250 dollar fine and a year proby. I got half that fine for my DUI in Nub land. What's BS is that now Billy boy gives Purify this slap on the wrist and other players will see this as the patients running the asylum. And all this does is give a black eye to NU and the Big XII.

I know more about the situation then you and it was a disgusting thing for him to do fwiw.

You're making it abundantly clear that you don't think there is anything wrong with Driving while intoxicated. It's not about what other people do and have done or was unlucky enough to have happen to them while they were driving drunk. It's about how lucky he was that he was able to drive drunk without killing someone.
It's not like someone that is driving drunk has the choice to kill or not kill. They've already made the choice to drive drunk and if you ask me it's just the same as making the choice of killing someone because you're essentially taking your future actions and placing them in the hands of fate. Something so reckless deserves to be punished much harsher than any laws we have here in the United States. It's a joke, and attitudes like yours only perpetuate the lack of seriousness with this crime.
I understand that you've never been affected by a drunk driver and I hope you never do. I'm being 100% serious about this - KSU vs. Nebraska aside - Driving drunk is like blindly firing a gun into a crowd of people. Would you only consider that a crime if fate guided that bullet through someone’s head? I'm treating this as a serious matter because it is a serious matter. No classless post, no sarcasm, just honestly think about the above scenario. Because there is no difference between that and driving drunk.
I believe life hand picks lessons to teach you. Call it Karma if you want, but if you think doing something as reckless as that doesn't justify harsh punishment, then I pray that it's one lesson you never learn. No one should have to go through that.
Now, should he have to go to prison? Certainly not; but any punishment handed out should deter repeating those actions; otherwise what's the point? Do you think a 1 game suspension, a fine, a good talking to, and loss of a driver's license is enough to make him realize the faults in his actions? That's the only way to answer the question of how harsh and how lenient the punishment is.

steve dave I really think you are just full of crap and really need to move on with your own life and quit bitching about how others live theirs. You keep selling that you know something and we ain't buying. Just my humble opinion.

Ain't no way that Purify did that well at the "straight line walk"...
