Title: ku fans travel?
Post by: catsdo on July 13, 2007, 01:15:52 PM
The fans on phog are actually trying to argue that they usually bring a lot of fans to our stadium.  Does no one else remember how there were hardly any ku fans in the visitor's section 2 years ago?  I seem to remember their ticket office returning a ton of tickets a few weeks before the game.

How they can't sell out their allotment being on 90 miles away is laughable.

They had a decent amount of fans travel to Manhattan in 2003 when they thought Bill Whittemore was going to end the streak.  They didn't come close to selling out their allotment, and many of their cheap-ass fans stayed in the parking lot through halftime.  Most of them didn't stay around for post-game festivities.

In 2005, I was expecting quite a few more ku fans to show up.  They didn't come close to filling up the SE corner of the stadium.  By reading some of the posts in the thread linked above, it's obvious that 20 or so fans sitting in club level seats and CPAHawk sitting on the 50-yard line equal thousands of traveling ku fans.

They sent a whole bunch of tickets back to KSU in '05, and then called selling out what they kept "selling their allotment".

They didn't even go to a bowl last year so I'll understand if their numbers are down this fall.  ;)

The excuses are usually...

1. Other things to do (scheduled) on same date.
2. MU is their real rival.
3. Manhattan is a craphole.
4. KSU has bad fans.
5. Don't want my car vandalized...

But in the end it amounts to ku fans just not supporting their team.

The last time someone made that statement their justification for it was that more people lived in Lawrence than Manhattan.

That's not a biased opinion.  Did you poll 1276 Lawrence residents to get that stat?

1 year doesn't mean better football.  Football is all that matters in Manhattan (and the rest of the Big 12).  Has ku ever had college gameday?  No, so better football.  We are at times considered at top 25 "toughest place to play" in all of college football.  And when you beat teams like Texas (which I sadly missed), that just makes the whole football experience that much better.

Actually, KSU is still seen as the better football program.  It's hilarious that EA puts Prince as a higher coaching prestige than Mangino after one year.

So you're basing this on an EA Sports video game where half the people who make the game probably don't even follow football?  Check out Sports Illustrated's list of top BCS coaches.  Mangino is 34th while Prince is right near the very bottom.

ku's new football facilities are going to finally solidify our football program as the best in the state.  K-State can't live off of their success nearly five years ago for much longer.

How am I wrong on alumni support?  Check out the alumni at ku and the alumni at K-State.  I'd say ku has a stronger group.  Also, ku's endowment is well over a billion dollars.  K-State's is at $295 million.  Care to explain?

As far as more tradition, I didn't say ku had more tradition in football.  ku's never had as successful of a 10 year period as K-State had under Bill Snyder.  Even at that, in my opinion the tradition of ku and the tradition of the basketball program carries more weight.  Not taking anything away from K-State, but you can't argue with the school that was coached by the inventor of the game of basketball.

It just depends on who you talk to.  I've got friends who go to ku who are from Manhattan that swear that Lawrence is the better college town.  While they love Manhattan, they just prefer Lawrence's laid-back environment.

I'd probably agree that Manhattan is generally more friendly.  I think it has a lot to do with the fact K-State has a lot more small-town Kansas kids.  Those small-town Kansas kids are usually real friendly and care-free, especially when you get them drunk.  Even I get annoyed with the idiots from Chicago and St. Louis who think that their city is the best in the world.
