Title: horror movies
Post by: asava on July 13, 2007, 09:02:28 AM
so i am a pretty avid watcher of horror movies and horror literature. last night i watched probably the best horror movie i have seen in years and was totally caught off guard by it. The Descent is absolutely good, and plays perfectly as a horror movie... i was wanting to recommend it to any horror buffs on the board...

who else likes horror movies? what is your favorite?

yesterday i saw a title i really wanted to see, it was called "Ankle Biters" and was about dwarf sized vampires that somehow obtain a powerful pedant that will turn people ino "Shaq-size" vampires. I was this close, but decided on The Descent.

I wouldn't call myself a horror officianado, but I do like them.  I dont' get into it deep enough to see anything that isn't already popular and has made the rounds.  But to me, nothing will ever be more scary than The Exorcist.  The redone version with the spider crawl down the stairs sent chills up my spine.

Some of the newer horror movies that is nothing but CGI and lame make-up and crap usually just makes me laugh.

I've always been a fan of B-grade horror movies, especially the TV versions.  They can become comedic gold once the editors get a hold of them.

Some of my favorites:
CHUD
Piranha II

Yup.  They were experimental piranhas to be dropped into the rivers behind the lines in Vietnam.  I especially liked the part where the flying fish jumped out of the dead body at the morgue.

I just called you by it. You interpreting that as a rip is telling, though. Does that mean you've been beaten every time you call me "kougs," complete with quotation marks? Ouch.

Most overrated piece of crap ever. Not scary. At all. People that recommend this movie are really just lameasses that are trying to be cool and trendy by recommending a foreign film that most people have never heard of.

(spoiler alert)

i'll agree that the audition isn't the best movie... but it does push the bounds of the horror film norms. the movie slowly builds, and doesn't really give much to let you know what is going to happen. the only clues you get are her sitting by the phone waiting for it to ring and the big bag of moving potatoes which turns out to be a guy. it is uniquely shot, and definitely an original play on gore/horror flicks. originality alone is worth watching it, but i do agree it gets overrated a bit. oldboy, however is the masterpiece.

(end spoiler alert)

both films appease the gore fanatics more than the horror nuts, as they don't really dabble in the suspense much. if you want to see some of the craziest special effects make up and blood, then you should see these movies. if you don't, you should see these movies.

I really love horror movies. All kinds. I like the sci-fi end of the world stuff. I like the zombie end of the world stuff. I'm not big on torture type movies. They're not horror movies, not scary. Just gory movies. I did like Hostel, though. Hostel II was really disappointing.

Some recent horror movies: Severance, 28 Weeks Later, War of the Worlds (Original), etc.

I don't watch horror movies, but I liked Shaun of the Dead.  F'ing hilarious.

Why have there been so many freaking horror movies out the last few years?  Seems like The Ring and Saw really set things off.

I thought The Descent sucked too. Actually, it wasn't terrible but it didn't come close to living up to the hype I'd heard about it. I just thought it was kinda boring.

The descent was slow and it took too damn long for someone to die, but hey in the end everyone died.
I personally enjoy the Freddy Kruger movies because he's a pretty comical guy. When I first saw, when I was like 10 I stayed up for most of the night, afraid Freddy would murder me in my sleep.
The first Hostel was a pretty good one, though I don't think it was as good as it was hyped up to be.
The movie "It" disturbs me every time I watch it.

For the people who liked Shawn of the Dead, check out Severance. Very similar movies. Both really good.

Event Horizon was not bad. Too bad it had a horrible director.

I think one of the better horror movies I've seen is House of 1000 Corpses. I just really loved the style. I also like Silent Hill, but I liked the video games as well.

House of 1000 Corpses is basically a rip off of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The original TCM is probably my favorite movie.

That's pretty ridiculous to say. They both involved messed up families, but that's about the extent of the similarities.

And the original TCM (well, both for that matter) is extremely over rated, IMO. The opening scene is amazing, but after that, crap.

Here, let me eat you while I suck on my decaying grampa's finger.
Title: Re: horror movies
Post by: asava on July 13, 2007, 09:15:49 PM
have you seen all of the TCM's? There are so many ideas that house of 1000 just flat out stole. i'm not saying i hold it against it, zombie flat out said his inspiration for that movie were his favorite horror movies (he is absolutely nuts about them), including my beloved TCM.

and about the original, the movie was groundbreaking in so many ways. absolutely gorgeous in shot. it draws you in, and the absence of music adds to an elaborate horror scheme that lets the characters become real.

everything that has and is ever good can be classified as overrated. don't use that as a dismissal of its worth.
Title: Re: horror movies

Horror movies that focus on gore and killing aren't real horror movies.

Those that focus on abject terror, the ones that cause you to squirm on your seat, that causes your own mind as the audience to become as frightened and terrorized as the victim on screen, are the true horror films.

It's not enough that someone dies.   It's so much more when you see the person in there having to make desperate choices and watch as your hatred for the perpetrator grows even more.  Sure, there needs to be some gore, but it doesn't drive the movie.

I just saw the original and the first "remake."  I think Zombie took inspiration in more of his style than substance, especially with exploitation films. What were all the sequels about? What ideas did he steal? You've gotten me curious, now.
Title: Re: horror movies
Post by: asava on July 14, 2007, 10:19:20 AM
the sequels were all about cannibalistic families that terrorize people. i havn't seen em in like 8 years, so my memories are a little hazy. i will have to go and watch them again and do a better analysis. I suggest you should do the same.

ideas ripped:
Basically Every Character
1. the alienated muscle of the family (the person who does all the work and who is constantly abused by his family)
2. The conflicting parent and mentally strong child
3. the gas station attendant (although i thought zombie did a much better than any of the tcm's on this one)
4. The one girl that gets away... kind of (Zombie added a twist to it)

Plot
1. The underground Labrynth
2. The entire movie follows pretty much the exact same formula as all of the TCM's

i never saw the sequel to House of a 1000 corpses, but i heard it was pretty good. i took a class once that went to go see it as a field trip, but i couldn't go for some reason.
