One of the local high schools here in New York, Susquehanna Valley, uses K-State's Powercat logo. Now, I know we've seen this before, where high schools will use a well-known college or pro logo (such as Denver's Bronco or Duke's Blue Devil) ... but at least they keep the integrity of the logo intact by calling themselves the "Broncos" or the "Blue Devils."
Not Susquehanna Valley. They call the Powercat a Saber.
Every time I ask somebody from SV what their logo is, they unanimously say it's a Saber. They don't even acknowledge that the logo belongs to K-State. Actually, they don't even acknowledge K-State's existence.
Are there any other schools that use K-State's logo and call it something other than, uh, a Wildcat?

Lawrence Free State's logo got sued by Temple for using the body of the Temple Owl. The head was different, but the body/wings/talons were a complete copy. They had to change their design (it's complete crap now too.) I wonder if K-State knows they stole our design.

Well, they move the powercat around a little bit and make it kind of smudgy so I think they're alright.

We usually let all high schools use the powercat. I think we charge them like $.05 for royalties..
-
Cuba, Missouri uses it. Wildcats, though. Also, their powercat doesn't look as mongoloid as that one.
-
Lamark's high school team used it as well.
-
louisburg uses it and i'm pretty sure they're the wildcats. i heard that bill snyder once owned the copyrights to the powercat, is there any truth to this?

Tom Bookwalter, a K-State art professor, owns the rights to the Powercat.

And he is &@#%ing loaded because of it. I think he makes 10% of the royalties off of it.

when i interned at the alumni assoc. i had to do a story/art on this.
back then (2000) there were 28 or so schools using it in the US.

Well, didn't Snyder and Bookwalter come up with the new logo together? I thought the whole new logo was Snyder's idea (kind of like Frye with Iowa)

From what I've gleaned from conversations, since it's difficult to separate non-powercat sales from powercat sales, I believe he gets a portion of all ksu merch.

Snyder doesn't receive any royalties from the use of the Powercat logo.
Bookwalter takes in anywhere between 5 and 10 percent IIRC.

must be 10% different. of course that isnt 10% different, 5 at the most

I was under the impression that it was only pennies on each powercat. Most of the 'royalty' goes to the publisher, they are they ones that are in charge of hounding down the assholes that make illegal copies of the logo.

I believe Bookwalter actually came up with IOWA's logo as well, hence the striking similarities. Also, why Snyder and Bookwalter knew of eachother.
Snyder had nothing to do with the design other than asking Bookwalter to design it... or so I hear.

Snyder also had Bookwalter go through several versions until he came up with one he liked.
In other news, an elementary school in Garden City uses a flipped version of it (facing left), and they call themselves the Cougars. Nobody there kids themselves in to thinking that it's not a copy of the powercat though. :blahblah:
-
Schools pay only $1 for the use of it, but they have to pay royalty fees for merchandise sold. Bookwalter still receives some fees from it, but I believe the University owns it now.

Far as I know, Tom won't sell it to the University. There is too many bonuses to sell it at this point.

From Candace Buckner, KC Star:
For any high school searching for new mascot logo, may we suggest the “Powercat.” It’s sleek, it has two fangs and it costs less than a McDonald’s cheeseburger.
The Carlisle Community School District in Iowa is grateful for that. In a time when universities are bombarding high schools with cease-and-desist letters to stop using their logos, K-State has agreed to let the Carlisle district continue with the Powercat symbol. And only for $1.
“It’s hilarious,” Carlisle superintendent Tom Lane said. “We were fully prepared to politely be told, ‘Sorry,’ and we were elated that we can keep it. We like the logo here.”
Lane should be relieved that there’s no “W” in Carlisle. The University of Wisconsin has told another Iowa school district to stop using its logo. So now the Waukee school district has five years to erase the Badgers’ “W” from gym floors, uniforms and signage, or else Wisconsin goes legal.
“Waukee was told: ‘No ifs, ands and buts. You’re done using our logo,’ ” Lane said. “I had just assumed with our licensing agreement (with K-State) due that we were going to hear the same thing.”
But K-State played nice and extended the licensing contract another two years. And in a move that shows somebody is thinking inside K-State’s public relations department, the university charged the Carlisle school district a mere dollar. Hint, hint: Wisconsin, charging a buck generates much more positive press than releasing lawyers.
“We don’t want to create a financial hardship for high schools,” said Tami Breymeyer, K-State director of licensing, “so we set it a fair rate.”
-
i have a brother in law that went to law school at Washburn and i guess they got into a mess with each others "W" wash won it though having a few noticeable differences. I know the Admire Wildcats used to use the powercats (jh) i can't recall for sure if northern Heights High School (big bro) used the powercat or not though
-
One of the highschool's in Omaha (Millard West) is the Wildcats. A very few of their sports teams will sport the powercat but many hold out and refuse to use it because of their retardedy devotion to NU.
-
I kind of wonder what the licensing fees would be for the fair use of the KATPAK golfhead cover as a logo.

Imagine that on the side of a football helmet...OR, if they somehow formed the helmets to look like the actual golfhead cover.
-
One of the Cy-fair schools here in Houston uses it. They are the Cougars.

my highschool in NY uses it for fb helmets
we are the widlcats, my uncle is the fb coach
blue and gold, was purple and gold until the blue was cheaper for crap around the school, change was made in early 70's
