The French Open is much more exciting because everyone wants to know if Federer will beat Nadal. Nobody will ever beat Federer at Wimbledon.

If he wins it this year, which he is capable of doing, it is going to be extremely tough. He draws Roddick and Blake on his side of the bracket, along with marat safan and a few other tough players. Its going to be a tough draw, especially with guys like that who have so much more power than him. Power on grass plays, and there could be some upsets.

On the other side of things we can also see if Nadal can make it two in a row and prove his worth on a surface other than clay. It should be an exciting tournament with players like Roddick and Blake really poised to go deep.

Not to mention,

Granted, Roddick and Blake are good, I just don't know if we'll ever see Federer lose on grass..

its true... the man is without a doubt the best player to have ever played the game. by the time he is done with his career he will have broken every mens record ever. I read something the other day that he has been to 9 straight grand slam finals. and has only lost two of them (the two losses to Nadal in the French).

That should be reason enough to watch a match  or two, to see the best player the world has ever seen and how amazing his tactics and ability is.

I'm a Sampras fan myself, but Federer is just in a whole different league.

It will be a shame though, if one of the greatest players in the game (maybe THE greatest) never wins a French Open. He did beat Nadal in Rome though, so he can win on clay..

There were lots of great players that never one at Roland Garros.... Sampras being one of them.

The thing is a game on red clay is completely different than any other surface. Its a slower pace, playing more of an advantage to a game with spin and depth. It gives the faster players (Nadal) a chance to get to balls that they might not be able to get to on grass or hardcord. For the first time in my life I played on Red Clay this past semester, it was absolutely different. I have been playing for about 17 years now, and there was such a change that it was tough to adjust and actually get things going.

When you (Federer) are facing the best clay player in the world, one who many are saying may have the potential to be the best clay court player ever, its pretty tough to do. Not to mention that guy, Nadal, is 21 and only getting better and stronger. He grew up on red clay and is absolutely natural on it.

That being said, the mere fact that Federer, who has won on every type of surface imaginable except clay, has made it to two straight French Open championships is absolutely incredible. I do agree though, he needs a French.

for your time,

I'm pretty sure it's du jour, but I'm not sure. I totally understand, playing on clay is completely opposite to any other surface. The sliding is something you also have to get accustomed to. I just want Federer to get a grand slam atleast once. He seems like a good guy. However, I always root for Blake/Roddick over him. Americans have got to stick together man. I also hate Nadal..

Edit: It would be cool if he did it next year and also won the Olympic medal. I believe Graf is the only tennis player to ever do this..

true that. i don't root for Federer, i just stand in awe. Personally i like Blake better than Roddick, on a personality level. Roddick is a little cocky, but he is American, so that is all that matters.

What i think we need to do is have a bit of perspective and go ahead and wait for another 15 years until Agassi's son is dominating everyone on earth.

Agree on the Blake thing. I just really respect him and Roddick, not so much. But I have to root for him, obviously..

I just love watching Federer. That's really the only reason I root for him. But I also root for him to lose sometimes, just because it won't happen. Is that weird?

I totally agree on the Agassi thing. You have Steffi Graf (greatest women's singles player ever?) and Andre Agassi's DNA. The kid will be incredible.

I don't know if i ever root against Federer. The only time i get emotionally involved with his matches is when he plays Nadal, especially in the French. I definitely want him to lose sometimes because i just want to know that he is human and that he isn't unbeatable. He is way too close to perfection sometimes, but he also has a great humbleness to him that kind of allows me to not care that he always wins.

I think his humbleness is kind of a bunch of b.s. fwiw.. There's nothing wrong with that either, he's definitely earned the right to be cocky. kudos to him for acting humble, I really do like watching him play. He's even gone on record as saying that he hates drop shots because it ruins the volley. Could anyone else say that? That's how much of a badass he is.

Federer is pretty ridiculous.   He's now won 7 of 9 Grand Slams and 9 of 13.  He has made the finals in the past 9 GS and made at least the semis in all of those 13.

I was really impressed with Nadal today.  He played Fed point for point on a surface that Fed has dominated.

Edberg vs Becker and Sampras vs Agassi were some great rivals i watched growing up, and this one looks to be good for the next few years.
