Title: Best stand up
Post by: pufizzle on June 25, 2007, 10:25:22 AM
Who's the best stand up comic you have seen?

I know a lot of people are going to say Dane Cook.  But the stand up that has me crying everytime I watch it is Kevin James (King of Queens).  His HBO special called Sweat the Small Stuff.  If you haven't seen it, go rent it.

Other favorites??

the best stand up i have seen live was the comedy central tour with mitch hedberg, lewis black, and dave attell. that crap was hillarious.

the best i have seen on tv is probably a tie

patton oswalt. that dude is hi-larious.
&
Zach galifianakis: his humor is completely different than most and is absolutely genius.

(watch the Comedians of Comedy tour movie)

that kevin james one is absolutely hillarious though, he does such a good job of representing his jokes physically. the bit about picking out a card is hillarious, as well as when he is in the water after falling down from water skiing.

Do you mean seen live? Or just seen, like on Comedy Central or HBO?

1997 Chris Rock: Bring the Pain on HBO was probably the funniest thing I've ever seen.

Doesn't matter.  I haven't seen any live stand up comedians (other than the looney bin in Wichita).

I will say that I think Dave Chapelle might be second on my list though.  Definitely funnier than Chris Rock IMHO.

hicks is pretty much the king. cross gets a little too politcal sometimes, but for the most part he is genius, but i liked his portrayal as Tobias Bluthe better than his stand up.

I never understood why they canceled it.
Title: Re: Best stand up
Post by: asava on June 25, 2007, 02:57:45 PM
fox didn't know how to market it. they put it on the wrong nights, at the wrong time, competing for the wrong audience. a show that wins an emmy the same year it gets cancelled is not the problem. the problem was fox. then they tried to get on showtime or hbo. neither of them picked it up immediately. after dvd sales went up showtime tried picking it up, but the writers had already called it quits and were so fed up with the whole situation that they just said no.

I respect your opinion but completely disagree. The genius of Cross on Arrested Development is that most of his dialogue was improv on the show, and for the most part, was the only cast member allowed to do so.
His standup is brilliant because you rarely ever see the punchline coming. I suppose if you don't have the same venom for pop culture and the American political landscape, I guess you wouldn't find his material that entertaining. I find Hicks to be my favorite but Cross is getting better as he releases more material.

oh i completely agree on most of those points. i own both "Its Not Funny," and "Shut up, you &*$@!ing baby" and i find them completely hillarious, but i don't like it when people get absolutely wrapped up in political comments. i don't care if they are right or left political biases, or whatever, it just gets boring after more than a few minutes of it. that is why i liked his character on arrested development, because he created it. he was brilliant in it, and his ability really showed in his character development. its not that i don't like cross, i think he is hillarious, but he has a few time where he just goes on a rant about political stuff. which, is very predictable regardless of how you do it. just my opinion.

*also, Mr.Show was amazing.

I can see that. I don't identify with all of his political leanings, but his passion and desire for change comes through. This is some of the best common sense I've heard: http://youtube.com/watch?v=DD0Ec_6F0TM&mode=related&search= (http://youtube.com/watch?v=DD0Ec_6F0TM&mode=related&search=)

He came to K-State last year for some UPC thing, and there were probably like 12 people there, either way he killed it.

I think the funniest stand-ups to see in person are the ones you've never heard of from television or whatever major media source.  Once they reach a certain level of success, they seem to try to appeal to wider audiences and lose their edge as a result.

there were two of those gallaghers. there was leo and ron.

which brings to questions, which pair of gallaghers were more comedically fulfilling?

Leo and Ron Gallagher

or

Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis....

my bets on the brits.

Hands down, Robin Williams.  Gaffigan is real damn funny though, "You never feel good after eating a hot pocket....did i eat it....or did i smear it all over my face?".  If u find a Canadian Indian (forehead dot Indian) that can imitate the Indian accent very well and tell racist jokes funny, then Russel Peters is the man.
