I hate rehashing this stuff.
But I keep hearing that down at the bowl game, Shorty didn't come prepared to deal with that crappy playing surface. I understand that all KSU has on hand was Nike molded cleats, and they really needed the long screw in cleats.
Not that it would've made that much difference, but I understand Shorty was totally unprepared for the field conditions in Houston.
Anybody know anything about that??
-
our players were slipping around all over the field. no joke.
-
I have heard that as well. I have heard is said is several different manners but they all come to not having the correct equipment. Some have said that Shorty took what LHOFSnyder said to take and was not prepared to go it alone and I have heard from others that Shorty was behind the times with equipment matters as far as the new stuff the Prince wants brought into the program with the new Nike contract and that was either the reason he was let go.
-
In reading between the lines over the years, I got the feeling that Shorty pretty much had to have LSnyder managing him pretty closely . . . almost like LSnyder had to make "to do" lists for the guy.

The part about us not bringing the right cleates is 100% fact. I'm not sure whether or not you can pin it all on shorty or if that's the reason he got fired.

I was told the decision not to renew his contract was made before the bowl.

Well, that explains the cleats.
-
The field did make a difference in how we played. It looked like we were trying to run on ice without slipping down sometimes. Freeman's pick-6 was a direct result of his foot slipping right when he released it, I don't care what anyone says it's clear as day in the replay. I wouldn't be surprised at all if that stuff factored in the decision to let Shorty go had he not had the right cleats.

Field + freeman broken finger = reason for texas bowl loss?
-
Field + freeman broken finger + good Rutgers + not good K-State = reason for texas bowl loss
-
field = reason why we looked division II. We still would have been beat by at least a couple TDs regardless.

What he said.
Yes, Shorty was the equipment manager but you would have hoped that at least one coach or player would have thought that far in advance. Maybe Houston told them the roof would be closed in the case of inclement weather.

Why didn't anyone check out the field in the days prior to the game? They could have easily shipped more cleats down. Who is to blame for that?

Lets just blame Weiser... its easier and much more fun!

Think about that one for a minute.
Take your time.

Equipment guy = responsible for getting needed equipment to where it is needed.
-
Why not double check on a guy named "Shorty" who has proven to be incompetent in the past? Who is responsible for that?
-
I blame William Shatner.
-
I think it's safe to say that there was a major issue with the cleats and that placing 100% of the blame on one guy - whether it's Shorty, Weiser, or Shatner - is ridiculous. You don't place 100% of the responsiblity for something of that magnitude solely on one person. Prince's business books should tell him that.
-
I think they should hire Jack Welch as a consultant.

Jack Welch would be an excellent equipment manager.
-
The Equipment Management Group for KSU athletics would have 450,000 employees, multiple divisions and be the model for all the corporate world.

As I figured, you can't think past the end of your nose.
Two days before the game, the field was in fine condition.

exactly

I don't think I'm the one who has lost sight of the bigger picture here. There was an issue with the cleats, right? It was preventable, right? That is what is interesting about this. Not some mysterious two day timeframe for checking field conditions.

Well, you are the one that introduced a time frame for checking the field into the discussion, and I'm the one that called you on it.
A mistake was made, and the party most directly responsible is no longer employed.
This is a non issue at this point.

KSU4ME = Shorty or Shorty's lover
-
Don't know where you got that idea, I'm quite good with Shorty being gone. I just think this entire conversation is stupid. That's why I pointed out Chum's brilliant idea.
-
Two days before the game, the field was in fine condition.
Actually it wasn't. In the Texans-Colts game four days before, guys were sliding all over the place. Ron Dayne rolled his ankle in the first quarter. chum's reasoning is justified.

If someone has to double and triple check every manager's job why the hell have a manager in the first place?
The decision on Shorty was made long before the Texas Bowl. The cleat fiasco just made the decision even easier to sell to everyone else.
The problem was obvious... many of the "long-time employee's" got comfortable not having to be truly accountable during the Snyder era because Bill was the type that trusted no one and felt he had to be involved daily in all decisions made in Vanier. It is why a lot of good people didn't stay around. They didn't like being micromanaged and treated like they weren't smart enough to do a job all by themselves. Others got comfortable and lazy knowing Coach Snyder was going to do their work without any consequences to them.
When Prince came along he basically said "if you are a capable manager at your job then you don't need me micromanaging every decision connected with your job". If you aren't capable of doing your job well without being micromanaged then we'll go fine someone who can.
Personally I would much prefer working for that kind of boss as opposed to the micromanager boss.

"We thought there was a better equipment manager in Wichita than Shorty."
sincerely,
Brian Butler

If this was known, someone probably thought to themselves, "thank God we have that nice guy Shorty as our equipment manager. He surely checked out the field and I trust him to have the proper equipment."
If they did think that and the equip manager can, well, manage equip, Shorty should be fired. If they did not think that because Shorty was incompetent at his job, Shorty should be fired. Not that hard to think through.

The decision for shortys contract to not be renewed was decided before the bowl game, Shorty was not notified of this, but had the feeling of it. The only shoes that we had in stock were were molded. On the note of using longer cleats, it is against NCAA rules to use anything longer than 1/2" cleats. I looked at rutgers cleats before the game and they were using mostly the same cleats as we were. Also the players were notified to bring all shoes they had. We were not allowed to be on the field at all the week prior to the game, because of painting, letting it dry out etc. If you watched the Texans Colts game on Sunday you could tell the field was terrible. The firing of Shorty was inevitable, but it could have been handled way differently and the guy would not be as miserable.
