Good, not great is a great description.

I'm pretty sure he just got the Oscar for Departed because they want to give him one before he dies.

Sorry but most directors in Hollywood would kill for just one of those movies on that list.  Scorsese has swung and missed a lot but when he connects it's a beautiful thing, seriously...Raging F'n Bull??

I agree with Rusty that The Departed was over blown/hyped and probably didn't deserve the Oscar, although I'm not sure what its competition was last year and don't really care that he won it because I think the f'n oscars are a bunch of self-absorbed hollywood idiots who have no sense of the real world we all live in anyways.

I don't remember "Taxi Driver" and haven't seen "Raging Bull."  But even if they are as good as I could imagine them to be, I still don't think he'd live up to the hype.  "Goodfellas" and "Casino" both seem just a little phony and affected to me.  Comparing "Goodfellas" to "The Godfather," for example, would be like comparing Jay Leno to Johnny Carson.

God I hate Jay Leno.

Letterman>>>>>>>>>>>Leno

It's not even close.

My initial thought is to hate Leno as well.  He is actually good, not great, though.  Jaywalking and headlines (at least in their heyday) are pretty good bits.

I hate when he 'explains' his jokes. You know what I mean?

So you think it's fair to call Scorsese the most overrated director without having seen two of his most recognized films in "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull"?  What else on the list have you not seen?  Hell, I even liked "The Color Of Money".

Comparing anything to "The Godfather" is like comparing anything to "The Godfather", it just doesn't work and isn't fair.

FWIW Scorsese is working on a documentary on the Stones right now to be released this year.

And Leno has grown on me over time and actually has pretty decent writers, but I don't really watch the show.

Makes you feel like he is talking down to you, and he probably is to the majority of the world. They  are all probably looking at the size of his chin to listen to him.

Isn't Tom Cruise in "The Color of Money" and didn't Newman when Best Actor that year.

Yes x 2, but the film itself is not generally regarded as one of Scorsese's better works, my point was that maybe I just happen to like his filmmaking style, whatever the hell that is.

Yeah, I really don't like him at all.

So you think it's fair to call Scorsese the most overrated director without having seen two of his most recognized films in "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull"?

I saw one and don't remember that much about it.  Not a good sign.  I do understand that those are his two most acclaimed, but they would just have to be damn good for him to live up to the hype that I can't imagine it.

Hell, I even liked "The Color Of Money".

Now that you mention it, I do too.  In fact, it is probably underrated.  There's some good stuff in there - like when Newman gets hustled (was that Forest Whitaker?) and is in denial about it.

Comparing anything to "The Godfather" is like comparing anything to "The Godfather", it just doesn't work and isn't fair.

I wouldn't say that it is one of the all-time best movies.  I only chose it based on genre.  And I would say that there are other moves in that genre that should be considered great.

I don't know.  I couldn't really think of any crime dramas that stand out - including Goodfellas.  I know that I'm in the minority regarding Scorsese.  I just don't think he delivers like most people seem to.  I liked watching "Gangs of New York," for example, and there is tons of potential for a great story there, but I think the movie just wasn't a very good one.  Most of all, I hate his glasses.

imo he lets the story tell itself and doesn't force feed the thing to you like a lot of  guys do.  kinda an older style of storytelling maybe.
you should try to watch raging bull.  if you watch it and don't like how he tells the story then you and he just don't get along.

That has more to do with her celebrity status and money than her looks.

That has more to do with her celebrity status and money than her looks.

You guys would let yourselves become whipped by a chick you find repulsive?  You should move down to Palm Beach, find a lonely, rich old lady and live it up.

To me, Cameron Diaz initially seemed like the super cool chick that could hang with the guys, make lewd jokes, and just be a lot of fun overall.  Kinda hot, yeah, but mostly you like her because of her total package potential.  Then she started dating jerk-offs.  And you start thinking, "hey, why not me?  I'm no jerk-off."  You become jealous of the jerk-off and resentful of her for dating the jerk-off.  Eventually, as your resentment matures, you forget about why you liked her in the first place and come to think of her as merely ugly and annoying.
